Xiang, also known as Hunanese, is one of the major Chinese languages, spoken by tens of millions of people in Hunan province and neighbouring parts of central and south-western China. Since Xiang is written in standard Chinese, the document side, birth and marriage certificates, academic transcripts assessed by UK ENIC, business and legal papers, is handled in written Chinese, while the spoken language matters for interpreting: NHS, community and court appointments where someone from Hunan is more comfortable in Xiang than in Mandarin.
