Xitsonga, or Tsonga, is a Bantu language of southern Africa and one of South Africa's twelve official languages. It is spoken mainly in Limpopo province in the country's northeast, as well as in parts of Mpumalanga and Gauteng, and closely related varieties are used across the border in southern Mozambique, where the language is known as Xichangana or Shangane, and in southeastern Zimbabwe and Eswatini. Together the varieties have several million speakers. Xitsonga is written in the Latin alphabet and has been a written language since Swiss missionary work in the late nineteenth century, which produced early grammars and a Bible translation. It is taught in South African schools in Tsonga-speaking areas and used on national radio and television. Related languages include Ronga and Tswa in Mozambique.
