Yue is a major branch of Chinese spoken across Guangdong and Guangxi in southern China and in Hong Kong and Macau, with Cantonese, the speech of Guangzhou and Hong Kong, as its prestige form. Estimates put speakers at around 85 million. Yue varieties are tonal, with Cantonese usually described as having six tones, and they preserve final consonants that Mandarin has lost, which is why classical Tang poetry often rhymes better when read in Cantonese. The language is written with Chinese characters, including a set of special characters for Cantonese words used in Hong Kong publishing. Emigration from Guangdong and Hong Kong made Cantonese the historic language of overseas Chinese communities, including Britain's, where it is still widely spoken. Taishanese is another well-known Yue variety.
