Afrikaans Translation Services in Whithorn

With Afrikaans paperwork, the year a document was issued often decides if it needs translating at all. Until April 1994 South Africa had just two official languages, English and Afrikaans, so a birth record, divorce order or deed from those decades may be in Afrikaans, in English, or set out in both. A page that already carries English may need nothing from us. One in Afrikaans alone does, once a UK office has to rely on it.

So most of our Afrikaans translation services work in Whithorn is older paper. A father's will drawn up in Afrikaans. The deed of transfer for a family farm. A baptism entry from a church register, or a magistrate's maintenance order. Namibians bring their own version of the same file, because Afrikaans, German and English were all official in South West Africa until independence in 1990.

The UK Ancestry visa asks for full birth certificates for you, the parent and the grandparent your claim rests on, plus evidence of any name change. The grandparent's record is British. The parent's, issued in South Africa decades ago, is the one that may be in Afrikaans.

English to Afrikaans Translator (and Afrikaans to English)

Afrikaans to English is much the busier direction, since a caseworker, registrar or solicitor has to read what a South African or Namibian office wrote. English to Afrikaans translation is a smaller and fairly personal stream. A solicitor writing to an elderly beneficiary in the Northern Cape who reads English slowly. A care provider wanting a care plan in a resident's first language. Some exporters ask too, though much South African business runs in English, and we'll say so if a translation looks unnecessary.

Afrikaans text is written by native Afrikaans speakers. Afrikaans into English is handled by linguists who grew up with English and read Afrikaans fluently, and a second linguist checks it either way.

Certified Afrikaans Translation for UKVI, Courts and Universities

Afrikaans papers certified by us come back as the complete English text with a statement on our letterhead confirming it is accurate, signed, stamped and dated, which also tells the reader how to reach us. That is what paragraph 39B of the Immigration Rules expects for a document not in English or Welsh, and for leave to remain or settlement the translator's credentials must also be stated. Ours go to the Home Office and UKVI as a matter of course, and HMCTS, university admissions teams and HM Passport Office take them too.

Two other offices trip South Africans up. Giving notice of marriage means bringing a translation of every document that is not in English, and a foreign divorce must first be checked; GOV.UK currently lists the fee as £55 at the local register office, or £83 if the check falls to the General Register Office. UK ENIC's translation waiver for a Statement of Comparability names a short list of languages and Afrikaans isn't among them, so an Afrikaans degree certificate or academic record goes in with a certified translation.

Britain runs no sworn-translator system, and a certified translation fills that role. South Africa does have sworn translators, admitted by its High Court, and an office there may want a sworn translator's version of papers going back. Check with that office first: we supply certified translations, not sworn ones. An apostille, if one is needed, is for you or your solicitor to obtain, and a page that already carries one is translated in full, apostille included.

Afrikaans Documents We Translate

Go back far enough and the language changes. A 1925 Act gave Afrikaans official standing in the Union, and it soon pushed standard Dutch out of government use. Registers, estate files and deeds older than that are often in Dutch, frequently handwritten, so we confirm the language of each page before quoting.

Afrikaans Legal, Medical and Business Translation

Afrikaans legal translation is mostly about estates and families. A UK solicitor administering a will made in South Africa, or an estate that includes property there, needs the Afrikaans documents in English to see who inherits what. Family courts receive South African maintenance and care orders. If a notary or a South African office wants the translation in a set form, tell us and we'll prepare it that way; the notarial step stays with you or your solicitor. See legal translation services.

Afrikaans medical translation usually runs into English: a GP record or a cardiologist's report from South Africa for a new NHS practice. See medical translation services. Businesses can also have website translation into Afrikaans, though we'd ask first who the readers are.

Professional Afrikaans Translators: Who Does the Work

Every Afrikaans job has two linguists on it: one translates, the other compares the result with the source, line by line, before it reaches you. Wills and deeds go to a translator who knows South African property and succession terms. A usufruct or a fideicommissum has no tidy English equivalent, and it needs a short translator's note rather than a guess.

Why not just use a Dutch translator? Afrikaans grew out of the Dutch spoken at the Cape, and a Dutch speaker will understand a fair amount, but spelling, grammar and everyday vocabulary have drifted apart over three centuries. A Dutch linguist might get the gist of a will. A probate solicitor needs more than the gist. Our qualified Afrikaans translators work in Afrikaans itself.

Membership of the ITI or CIOL is a sensible thing to ask any translator about, ours included.

How Much Does Afrikaans Translation Cost in Whithorn?

For a standard Afrikaans certificate, certified translation costs from about £35 per page. Long court bundles, wills and deeds go by word count instead, and if a handwritten or faded page will take extra reading, the quote says so. Upload scans through our quote form; in UK office hours you'll usually have a fixed price inside sixty minutes. Our translation cost page breaks down how we price work.

How Long Does an Afrikaans Translation Take?

Translating and certifying a short Afrikaans document (a birth or marriage certificate, say) generally takes one to two working days. Where capacity allows, the same-day translation option may suit a short one. A thick estate file or an old handwritten register takes longer and gets its own date in the quote.

How to Order an Afrikaans Translation in Whithorn

  1. Scan all of it. Both sides of each certificate, every annexure to a will or deed, any stamp or note scribbled in a margin. Clear phone photos are fine, and you keep the originals.
  2. Tell us where it's going. UKVI, a register office, a solicitor, UK ENIC or someone in South Africa. Write the names out as the passport has them, including how a van, du or le is printed.
  3. Approve the fixed quote. We email the certified PDF; if the office wants paper, we post a tracked copy as well.

Afrikaans Translator Whithorn FAQs

How much does Afrikaans translation cost in Whithorn?

For a typical Afrikaans certificate, prices for certified translation start from about £35 per page, with wills, deeds and other long files priced per word. If your scans arrive in UK office hours, the fixed quote normally reaches you the same hour.

Can you certify an Afrikaans translation for UKVI or the Home Office?

Yes, certified Afrikaans translations for UKVI and the Home Office are routine work for us. Each one ends with a declaration, on Prism letterhead and carrying our contact details, that the English is accurate, with signature, stamp and date, the format the Home Office asks for when a document is not in English or Welsh.

How quickly can you translate an Afrikaans document?

Most short Afrikaans certificates take one to two working days, certification included. Same-day may be possible for a short document when we have capacity, and long or handwritten files get a deadline of their own.

Do you translate English to Afrikaans as well as Afrikaans to English?

We translate Afrikaans in both directions. Native Afrikaans speakers translate English into Afrikaans, native English speakers translate Afrikaans into English, and nothing leaves us until a second linguist has read it against the original.

Is there an Afrikaans translator near me in Whithorn?

Our Afrikaans translators serve clients in Whithorn remotely. You email or upload scans and keep your originals, the certified PDF comes back to you, and if the receiving office needs paper we send a tracked printed copy.

Can you translate old South African records written in Dutch rather than Afrikaans?

Old South African records in Dutch can be translated too, so mention it when you send them. Records from before 1925 are often in Dutch, so we check the language of each page first and pass it to a translator who reads that older spelling and handwriting.

About the Afrikaans Language

Afrikaans uses the Latin alphabet and runs left to right, with standard spelling set by the Taalkommissie's word list and spelling rules, known as the AWS. Some vowels carry a circumflex or a diaeresis. Surnames cause the most trouble on paper. A particle can be printed lower case after a first name (Jan van der Merwe) but capitalised when the surname stands alone, and du Plessis or le Roux behave the same way, so one person may appear both ways across a set of records. A single UK surname box can mangle that. We copy the passport. The South African identity number, which opens with the holder's date of birth written year, month, day, is reproduced digit for digit and never reordered.
