Akan Translation Services in Stockport
Much Akan translation in the UK runs from English into Twi or Fante, not the other way round. Ghanaian paperwork is mostly in English already, because English is the country's official language. A birth certificate, a degree transcript or a land document from Ghana usually lands on a UK desk ready to read.
So our Akan translation services in Stockport look different from most languages. A good share is public information: a health leaflet, an appointment letter, a council notice meant for an older Ghanaian reader who is happier in Twi. Then there is evidence. A WhatsApp thread in Fante, a voice note left by a relative, a handwritten letter from family in Ghana, each needing a faithful English version before a solicitor can use it. And a smaller stream comes from community groups and hometown associations wanting a constitution, a newsletter or a funeral notice in the language their members actually read.
Not sure your document needs translating at all? Send a photo. If it's in English, we'll say so and charge nothing.
English to Akan Translator (and Akan to English)
English to Akan translation is usually ordered by NHS services, councils and charities that need to reach readers of Twi or Fante. In 2025 NHS England published an improvement framework on community language provision that takes in written text such as website copy, posters and subtitles. A 2024 staff survey it cites found only 6% of NHS staff said enough written information in other languages was always available. Twi and Fante leaflets and letters help fill part of that gap. It always goes to a translator whose first language is Akan, matched to the form your readers use.
Akan to English is smaller in volume but higher in stakes. It is usually evidence, read by a judge or a caseworker who has no way of checking the original. That direction goes to a native English speaker who reads Twi and Fante fluently, so the English sounds like a person said it, slang and all.
Certified Akan Translation for UKVI, Courts and Universities
Prism certifies Akan translations by attaching a signed, dated and stamped declaration of accuracy, printed on our letterhead. You receive a PDF, and a tracked paper version goes out when the recipient wants paper. UK universities rely on it, as do HMCTS, HM Passport Office, the Home Office and UKVI.
The rules behind it are plain enough. Paragraph 39B of the Immigration Rules requires the original of any specified document in a language other than English or Welsh, together with a full translation that can be independently verified, carrying the translator's confirmation of accuracy, a name and signature, contact details and a date. The First-tier Tribunal (Immigration and Asylum Chamber) rules say a document handed to the tribunal that isn't written in English must be accompanied by an English translation. And when you give notice of marriage, the register office wants an English version of anything written in another language.
The UK has no sworn translators; certification of this kind is what UK bodies look for. An apostille, if a Ghanaian authority wants one on a UK document, is something you or your solicitor would arrange separately.

Akan Legal, Medical and Business Translation
Akan legal translation for UK clients often comes down to messages and recordings. A voice note has to be transcribed in Akan first, then translated, with each speaker and timestamp shown so a barrister can find the line they want. Where a word is unclear on the recording, we mark it as unclear. We do not guess. More on bundles and exhibits sits on our legal translation services page.
Akan medical translation goes the other way, into Twi or Fante for patients; see medical translation services. The occasional business request, such as a community group or small business wanting its site in Twi, goes to our website translation team.
Professional Akan Translators: Who Does the Work
Akan has more than one written form, and a professional Akan translator has to write in the right one. Asante Twi, Akuapem Twi and Fante each grew up as a literary standard with its own spellings. A leaflet spelt the Asante way can feel slightly off to a Fante readership, and the reverse is also true. So we ask who the readers are before anyone starts, and give Fante work to a Fante writer.
Every job is then compared against the source by a second linguist, line by line. If you're vetting a translator yourself, it's worth checking for ITI or CIOL membership, and which form of Akan they write by default.
How Much Does Akan Translation Cost in Stockport?
A short Akan document certified into English starts from about £35 per page. Leaflets, long statements and chat exports are priced per word, and a recording carries a transcription charge on top, shown separately on the quote. Files received while UK offices are open normally get a fixed figure inside the hour. Our translation cost page explains what pushes an Akan quote up or down.
How Long Does an Akan Translation Take?
A short Akan document is usually back within one to two working days of you approving the quote. A brief letter can sometimes go through same-day translation, for short documents and subject to capacity. Patient booklets and long call recordings need more time; the quote names a date you can plan a hearing or a print run around.

About Stockport
Stockport lies in Greater Manchester, a town with a proud industrial past that has grown into a lively commercial and residential centre south of the city. Its communities are increasingly varied, and that brings a steady need for language support. Local solicitors and legal firms handle cases that require interpreters, GP surgeries and health centres arrange appointments for patients with limited English, and council and local authority teams deal with a range of multilingual enquiries. Schools and colleges support pupils and parents from many backgrounds, while local businesses need documents translated for customers and partners abroad. Prism Linguistics provides certified document translation, face-to-face interpreting, and telephone and video interpreting in more than 300 languages. Every assignment is completed by a qualified native-speaker linguist and independently checked by a second linguist, so accuracy is verified before anything is delivered. We keep all work confidential and compliant with UK GDPR. From the market town centre out to the wider borough, we are set up to support organisations across Stockport.

Can you certify an Akan translation for UKVI or the Home Office?
Yes, Prism certifies Akan to English translations for Home Office and UKVI applications. Each carries our signed declaration of accuracy on letterhead, dated and stamped, and it also satisfies HMCTS, HM Passport Office and UK universities.
How quickly can you translate an Akan document?
Most short Akan documents take one to two working days. A same-day turnaround may be possible for short documents, subject to capacity. Leaflets or recordings are given a specific date when we quote.
Do you translate English to Akan as well as Akan to English?
Yes, Prism translates English to Akan as well as Akan to English. Native Akan writers produce the Twi or Fante, native English speakers who read Akan produce the English, and a second linguist checks every job.
Should my translation be in Asante Twi, Akuapem Twi or Fante?
Choose the form your readers grew up reading. The three spell many words differently, so Fante-speaking readers are best served in Fante, and if readers are mixed we can advise which form most of them will find natural.

About the Akan Language
Written Akan uses the Latin alphabet, read left to right, with two vowel letters English lacks: an open e and an open o, the second shaped like a turned c. Akuapem Twi was the basis for the Akan Bible, completed in 1871, and that gave it long-standing prestige as the literary model; Asante Twi and Fante kept spellings of their own. Names need care too. Akan day names come in several spellings (Kwaku, Kweku and Koku can all mark a Wednesday birth), so a certified English translation follows the passport exactly. Informal messages rarely keep to textbook spelling, which is why evidence goes to translators who read everyday Twi as well as the printed kind.
