Bhojpuri Interpreter Services
Prism Linguistics arranges Bhojpuri interpreter services anywhere in the UK, in person, by telephone or over video, for NHS clinics, courts, police, solicitors and councils. Bhojpuri is a small language in Britain, so a remote session is often the fastest option, and we book a Bhojpuri speaker for the job instead of defaulting to Hindi.

Before an interpreted appointment, GOV.UK guidance for health professionals tells staff to check the patient's dialect or variety, write it into the record alongside their preferred spoken language, and then compare the interpreter's language and dialect against the booking request. For a Bhojpuri speaker, that one check decides most of what follows. If nobody asks, or the system offers no Bhojpuri option, Hindi can go into the record instead, and every later booking copies it.
The mistake does not stay in one building. NHS England's primary care interpreting guidance says language preferences should be recorded and passed on when a patient is referred, so when the label is wrong the hospital, the physiotherapist and the district nurse inherit it too. When a request reaches us we ask one plain question: what does this person speak at home? If the answer is Bhojpuri, we supply Bhojpuri, and we suggest the referrer fixes the record while they are at it.
Bhojpuri interpreting services: face-to-face, telephone and video
Bhojpuri interpreting services put a professional interpreter into a spoken exchange between someone who speaks Bhojpuri and someone who speaks English, so each side hears the other accurately, whether they share a room, a phone line or a video screen. It is one strand of our wider interpreting services, and nearly all of it is consecutive, a sentence or two at a time.
Bhojpuri lives mostly in speech. In Bihar and eastern Uttar Pradesh, letters, forms and school books tend to be in Hindi, so a Bhojpuri speaker may read Hindi slowly, or not at all, and still talk with real precision about her own life. Reading an English consent form aloud means turning it into spoken Bhojpuri on the spot, not passing across a written version. Many speakers also slide between Bhojpuri, Hindi and a few English words in one breath, and the interpreter has to follow all three without tidying the answer into something it was not.
English to Bhojpuri interpreter (and Bhojpuri to English)
An English to Bhojpuri interpreter covers Bhojpuri to English in the same session; nobody books the two directions separately. The strain falls differently on each. Going into Bhojpuri, clinical and legal terms often have no everyday equivalent, so the interpreter may need a short explanation where English uses one word, and should tell the clinician so. Coming back into English, the hard part is keeping kinship terms, politeness and hesitation intact, because a careful answer can read as evasive once it has been flattened.
Relatives often offer to help, especially a grandchild who grew up here. The NHS England guidance discourages using family or friends, says nobody under 16 should interpret except where immediate, necessary treatment is needed, and asks that a patient who still wants a relative gives consent independently of that relative.
Bhojpuri court interpreters and HMCTS work
A Bhojpuri court interpreter turns evidence, questions and rulings into the other language completely and neutrally, so the witness and the bench hear exactly what was said. Under GOV.UK's rules for court and tribunal interpreters, a criminal defendant is given one, but a defence witness must ask the defence solicitor to find one. In the family court one is supplied where a case involves children, domestic violence or forced marriage; the civil courts supply one for property or land possession claims and for committal. A relative can interpret only if the judge agrees in advance.
Bhojpuri hearings are uncommon, and a listing can arrive with Hindi on it, or with no language at all. Solicitors can bring us the gaps, such as a defence witness, a conference before trial, or a statement from a client whose Hindi is shaky (our legal interpreting page covers the wider work). Send the hearing date as soon as it is fixed. Prism Linguistics is a private language-services provider and does not present itself as a court-appointed supplier.
Bhojpuri interpreters for NHS, police, solicitors, councils and business
Below are the settings where a Bhojpuri interpreter works and what to watch for in each, starting with healthcare, where the guidance above applies.
- Bhojpuri NHS interpreter: GP and hospital appointments
- Primary care interpreting should be free to the patient, and NHS England's guidance expects an interpreted consultation to take roughly twice the usual time. Practices that book a standard ten-minute slot for a Bhojpuri speaker can run out of minutes before the symptoms are out.
- Bhojpuri medical interpreter: diagnosis and treatment
- Stroke follow-ups, kidney clinics, cancer results and medication reviews, where a dosage or a risk has to reach the patient in words she will repeat correctly at home.
- Bhojpuri police interpreter
- Under PACE Code C, when an interview is recorded in writing the interpreter must note it at the time in the suspect's language and certify the note. Bhojpuri is seldom written, so check before the interview that your interpreter can produce that note in Devanagari. More on police interpreting.
- Solicitors and immigration advisers
- Witness statements, family matters and immigration interviews, where a client's account of dates and places has to survive into English without being smoothed.
- Councils and social care
- Care needs assessments, safeguarding meetings and housing visits, usually at home and often with the whole household listening in.
- Employers
- Now and then an employer (see business interpreting) needs Bhojpuri for a welfare or disciplinary meeting with a worker whose English is limited.
Face-to-face, telephone or video: which one fits?
For Bhojpuri, the mode is usually chosen by the person's hearing, the length of the conversation and how far the nearest interpreter lives. A pharmacy query or a results call works well with a telephone interpreter. Video interpreting suits a solicitor's conference or an outpatient review and gives the speaker a face to watch. Sitting together face to face is still best for a hearing, a long assessment or anyone who struggles with speakerphones.
| Mode | Best for | Typical notice |
|---|---|---|
| Bhojpuri telephone interpreter | Short calls: test results, appointment changes, a pharmacist checking doses. | Same day is sometimes possible, subject to availability |
| Bhojpuri video interpreter | Clinic reviews, legal conferences and remote hearings where no local interpreter is free. | One to two working days, sooner subject to availability |
| Bhojpuri face-to-face interpreter | Court, police interviews, home visits, people with hearing loss. | About a week, and travel may be part of the price |
Lead times for Bhojpuri bookings
Bhojpuri is a rare language for UK interpreting, and the pool of people who interpret it professionally is small and spread thinly. Remotely, that hardly matters. In person it matters a great deal: the right interpreter may live two or three hours away, so allow around a week if you can, and expect us to suggest video when the date is close.
Qualified, professional Bhojpuri interpreters: what to look for
Being bilingual is not the same as being a qualified Bhojpuri interpreter, and a handful of questions will tell you which one has turned up. They are worth asking of any agency or freelancer:
- DPSI (Diploma in Public Service Interpreting)
- CIOL Qualifications awards this Level 6 diploma, and Ofqual regulates it. According to CIOL's DPSI information, some languages run only when enough candidates enter, so ask an interpreter which language and which specialism they sat it in, not just whether they hold it.
- A place on the NRPSI
- The National Register of Public Service Interpreters handles rare languages where no Level 6 public service interpreting qualification exists differently from its main languages. Ask whether the interpreter is registered, and for which language.
- Enhanced DBS
- Custody suites, children's services and many hospital settings call for this higher level of check; the DBS eligibility guidance explains which roles qualify.
- Real experience in your setting
- A good question is how many interviews, hearings or consultations they have done in Bhojpuri rather than in Hindi.
- The right region and the right person
- Mention where the speaker grew up (Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Nepal or Mauritius) and whether a female or male interpreter would make the conversation easier.
From our side: each Bhojpuri interpreter on our books is professionally qualified and background-checked, court work goes to court-experienced people, and we confirm an Enhanced DBS for any setting that requires one.
Bhojpuri dialects and varieties: why it matters at booking
Bhojpuri changes with geography, and the booking should say where the speaker comes from. It belongs to the Bihari group of languages, and its neighbours cause most of the confusion. Someone from north-east Bihar may speak Maithili, a separate language; someone from around Patna or Gaya may speak Magahi. An interpreter fluent in one of them is not automatically comfortable in the others, so "Bihari" on a form is no more useful than "Hindi".
Further afield, Bhojpuri is also spoken in Nepal's southern plains, where speakers may mix in Nepali, and in Mauritius, where it has absorbed a good deal of Kreol. The Mauritius 2022 census found 5.1% of people speaking only Bhojpuri at home, down from 5.5% in 2011, against 90.0% speaking only Creole. So a Mauritian family here may need Bhojpuri for one grandparent and Kreol or French for everyone else.
How to book or hire a Bhojpuri interpreter
Tell us the brief
Send the date, start time, likely length and venue or video link, the type of appointment, the speaker's home region and how well they cope in Hindi, plus any wish for a female or male interpreter.
We match and price
We look for a Bhojpuri interpreter who fits both the speaker and the setting, then send a fixed price, normally within the hour during UK office hours, telling you honestly if remote work is the realistic option.
Confirm and the interpreter attends
Once you accept, the interpreter is briefed and either arrives in person or joins the call; NHS teams, councils and law firms receive an invoice, while private clients settle by card.
Find a Bhojpuri interpreter near me: cities and towns across the UK
Families searching for a Bhojpuri interpreter near me can book through us in England, Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland, but nobody can tell you from official figures where the UK's Bhojpuri speakers live. The Census 2021 main-language tables for England and Wales name Hindi, Nepalese and ten other South Asian languages, but publish no Bhojpuri category, and we will not guess a number. Requests can come from families with roots in Bihar, eastern Uttar Pradesh, the Terai and Mauritius, wherever they have settled. Where an interpreter can reach the venue we send one in person; elsewhere, video keeps the original date.
How much does a Bhojpuri interpreter cost in the UK?
Price for a Bhojpuri interpreter turns on five things: phone, video or in person; length; notice; travel; and the setting. In our published 2026 rates, an interpreter in the room costs £40 to £75 per hour, travel extra, for at least two hours (court work can carry a three-hour minimum). Telephone interpreting runs from £1.10 up to £2.50 per minute, and a half-hour video slot from £60 up to £120. Bhojpuri is a rare language, so prices usually sit at the upper end of those ranges, and travel can be a large share of an in-person booking. The quote form brings back a fixed price, normally within the hour during UK office hours.
If the appointment is with the NHS, the family should not be paying for it at all: the surgery or hospital should arrange the interpreter, and it helps to ask them to book Bhojpuri by name.
Confidentiality and GDPR for Bhojpuri interpreting
Bhojpuri interpreters keep everything they hear on an assignment confidential, and personal data is handled under UK GDPR. With so few Bhojpuri speakers interpreting in Britain, a client may worry the interpreter knows a cousin or a neighbour. Say so when you book and we will try to choose someone from a different region, working by video if that helps.
Need a Bhojpuri translator instead?
An interpreter deals in speech. For paperwork, for example a family record or a letter that needs putting into English, see Bhojpuri translation services and Bhojpuri document translation, or the Bhojpuri language services page for everything we offer in the language.
Bhojpuri interpreting FAQs
How much does a Bhojpuri interpreter cost in the UK?
A Bhojpuri interpreter is priced on mode, length, notice, travel and setting. Our 2026 rates run from 40 to 75 pounds per hour in person plus travel, from 1.10 to 2.50 pounds per minute on the phone, and from 60 to 120 pounds for a half-hour video slot, and Bhojpuri usually sits near the top. A fixed quote normally follows within the hour during UK office hours, and NHS appointments should cost the patient nothing.
How quickly can you book a Bhojpuri interpreter?
A Bhojpuri interpreter by phone or video can sometimes join on the day you call, subject to availability. Because few interpreters work in Bhojpuri, an in-person booking needs about a week of notice, and with less we may recommend video.
Are your Bhojpuri interpreters qualified for court and tribunal work?
Yes. Hearings are covered by court-experienced Bhojpuri interpreters, each professionally qualified and background-checked, and you may ask about their qualifications and NRPSI status beforehand. Prism Linguistics works as a private agency and holds no court-appointed status.
Do you provide Bhojpuri interpreters for NHS appointments?
Yes, for GP practices, hospital clinics and community services, in person or remotely. NHS interpreting should be free to the patient, so families can ask the practice or hospital to book it and to record Bhojpuri, not Hindi, as the language.
Can I book a Bhojpuri interpreter by telephone or video?
Yes, and for Bhojpuri it is often the most practical choice. A phone line works for brief calls, and a video link for longer or more sensitive conversations; both use interpreters from anywhere in the UK, so they are quicker to arrange than an in-person visit.
Can I request a female Bhojpuri interpreter?
Yes. Mention it when you book, particularly for maternity, gynaecology or personal care. The Bhojpuri pool is small, so extra notice makes a female interpreter much easier to confirm, and video widens the choice.
Do you cover Bhojpuri interpreting across the whole UK?
Yes. We take Bhojpuri bookings in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, sending an interpreter in person where one can reach the venue and working by telephone or video anywhere else.
Will a Hindi interpreter do for a Bhojpuri speaker?
Sometimes, for a short and simple appointment with someone who was schooled in Hindi. For anything clinical, legal or emotional, book a Bhojpuri interpreter, because many speakers understand Hindi better than they can express themselves in it, and the detail is lost on the way back into English.
About the Bhojpuri language
Bhojpuri is an Indo-Aryan language of western Bihar, eastern Uttar Pradesh and the plains of southern Nepal, usually written today in Devanagari, the script also used for Hindi. Nineteenth-century migration carried it to Mauritius and the Caribbean, and UNESCO added Geet-Gawai, the Bhojpuri pre-wedding song ritual of Mauritius, to its Representative List of intangible cultural heritage in 2016.
