Bulgarian Translation Services in Leicester

Nearly every Bulgarian certificate that lands on a UK desk carries a ten-digit personal number called the EGN. It's the Uniform Civil Number each Bulgarian is given at birth, and HM Passport Office guidance says it cannot be changed, bar a court order in very narrow circumstances. That number ties a birth certificate, a marriage certificate and an identity card to one person, so our translators copy it exactly.

Most of our Bulgarian translation services follow a family through the immigration system. For the EU Settlement Scheme, the Home Office lists a full birth certificate as evidence that a child is related to an EU citizen, and a marriage or civil partnership certificate as evidence for a spouse. The same certificates come back later, for a citizenship application or a baby's first British passport.

Jobs add their own papers. Bulgarian nationals living here apply through the Bulgarian Embassy in London for a conviction status certificate, the svidetelstvo za sadimost, and an employer vetting a new starter may well want it in English. Everything is done from scans, so it doesn't matter which part of Leicester you're in.

English to Bulgarian Translator (and Bulgarian to English)

Bulgarian to English translation is the bigger share of our work, nearly all of it paperwork from Bulgaria that somebody here has to read. English to Bulgarian translation is ordered mainly by organisations: employers with contracts and site safety rules, NHS services with appointment letters and patient leaflets, councils explaining school places or council tax.

Documents heading to Bulgaria are a separate case. In Bulgaria, a translation for official use is normally made by a translator on the Foreign Ministry's list, whose signature a notary or the ministry then certifies, so if a UK will or grant of probate is needed for an estate there, ask the notary or lawyer in Bulgaria what they'll accept before ordering anything. Any apostille on the UK document is for you or your solicitor to get.

Native Bulgarian speakers translate into Bulgarian. Native English speakers who read Bulgarian fluently translate into English.

Certified Bulgarian Translation for UKVI, Courts and Universities

Each certified Bulgarian translation we send out has our statement of accuracy attached, on Prism letterhead, signed, stamped and dated. GOV.UK's rule is that the translator confirms in writing that the translation is true and accurate, dates it, and gives a full name and contact details. Our statement covers each point. You receive a PDF; if the receiving office prefers paper, a copy goes by tracked post.

HM Passport Office, HMCTS, UK universities, UKVI and the Home Office all accept translations certified this way.

Clients who know the Bulgarian system sometimes expect a legalised translation by a translator on the Foreign Ministry's list. That process is for documents used inside Bulgaria. Britain has no sworn or state-listed translators and relies on the translator's own certification. If an apostille is already attached to your Bulgarian certificate, its page gets translated too.

Bulgarian Documents We Translate

Bulgarian civil status certificates are issued by the municipality, and certified copies can be requested there or, from abroad, through a Bulgarian embassy or consulate. The papers we see most:

  • Bulgarian birth certificate translation (the udostoverenie za razhdane) for EU Settlement Scheme family applications, naturalisation and children's passports
  • Bulgarian marriage certificate translation, plus Bulgarian divorce judgments, which a register office must check if you were divorced abroad and want to marry here (GOV.UK puts that check at £55 locally, or £83 when the check goes to the General Register Office)
  • diplomas and transcripts, from the diploma za sredno obrazovanie to a master's degree
  • Bulgarian driving licences: GOV.UK lets you drive on one in Great Britain until you're 70 if you became resident before 67, but an insurer or employer may still want it in English
  • immigration document translation for evidence sent to UKVI or the Home Office
  • legal document translation: conviction status certificates, Bulgarian court rulings, property deeds, and the certificate of heirs (udostoverenie za naslednitsi) a municipality issues when someone dies owning property in Bulgaria
  • medical document translation: discharge summaries, lab reports and immunisation records

Two traps. Bulgarian offices can attach an EU multilingual standard form to a certificate as a translation aid, but HM Passport Office guidance says it cannot accept those forms from EU member states, so a passport application still needs a proper translation. And UK ENIC's Translation Waiver Service doesn't currently name Bulgarian, so for a Statement of Comparability ENIC wants a certified translation by a professional translator.

Bulgarian Legal, Medical and Business Translation

Bulgarian legal translation for private clients is mostly family and employment work. A family court bundle might hold Bulgarian school reports and months of messages between parents; a tribunal claim can turn on a contract signed in Bulgarian. Our legal translation services keep names, sums and dates identical from the first exhibit to the last.

Bulgarian medical translation runs both ways. A UK consultant may need the epikriza, the discharge summary from a hospital in Bulgaria, in English, while an NHS care plan may need to reach a patient in Bulgarian; see our medical translation services. Companies trading with Bulgaria order product sheets, terms of sale and website translation.

Professional Bulgarian Translators: Who Does the Work

A professionally qualified Bulgarian translator, picked for the subject and direction, does the first draft; a second linguist then reads it against the original. The errors caught there are usually tiny. An EGN for a child born in 2000 or later, where 40 is added to the birth month, tidied up by someone who assumed a typo. A surname ending in -ov on the father's record and -ova on his daughter's, which is correct, not a mismatch.

We won't give Bulgarian to a Russian translator. The two share an alphabet but not its values: Bulgarian manages with 30 letters, its hard sign stands for a full vowel, and the letter a Russian reads as shch is read as sht. Plenty of words look familiar to a Russian reader and mean something else.

Hiring any Bulgarian translator, ours included? Ask if they hold membership of CIOL or the ITI, the UK's two main professional bodies for linguists, and what similar documents they've handled.

How Much Does Bulgarian Translation Cost in Leicester?

Certifying a standard Bulgarian document, a birth certificate or a conviction status certificate say, costs from about £35 per page. Anything longer is priced by the word. Email a scan for a fixed price, which normally reaches you within the hour if it's UK office hours. The translation cost guide explains per-page and per-word pricing.

How Long Does a Bulgarian Translation Take?

Most short Bulgarian certificates are back with you in one or two working days. Same-day translation can be done for short documents, subject to capacity, so if it's urgent send it in the morning. A tribunal bundle or a long contract is given its own date when we quote. If you need a posted paper copy, allow for the post on top.

How to Order a Bulgarian Translation in Leicester

  1. Scan or photograph each page. Don't forget the reverse of a certificate or any stamp and handwritten note, and tell us who in the UK will receive it.
  2. Agree the price and the spellings. We use the Latin spelling in your passport for each name. If an older document or a relative's passport spells a name another way, mention it now.
  3. Get the signed translation. It comes as a PDF by email, with a tracked paper copy if you want one.

Bulgarian Translator Near Me in Leicester

Searching for a Bulgarian translator near me usually means wanting someone quick and trustworthy, not someone round the corner. Our Bulgarian translators work from your scan, wherever they're based, and reply with a signed PDF, so there's no office near you to visit. The local part is where the translation gets read: a register office, a solicitor, a school admissions team or an employer in Leicester.

Confidential Bulgarian Document Translation

Your Bulgarian documents are seen by two people at Prism, the translator and the second linguist checking the work, and nobody else. Conviction certificates and medical records are personal data, handled under UK GDPR, with secure file transfer for anything sensitive. If there's a paper you'd rather not email, tell us and we'll find another route.

About Leicester

Leicester is one of the larger cities in the Midlands, home to a genuinely diverse population and a busy commercial base. With so many languages spoken across its neighbourhoods, clear communication matters to almost every organisation working here. Solicitors and legal firms often need certified translations for immigration, family and civil matters. GP surgeries, health centres and clinics call on interpreters so patients can describe symptoms and understand treatment. Local authority and council teams, along with schools and colleges, support residents from many backgrounds day to day, and local businesses need their contracts and marketing understood abroad. Prism Linguistics helps with all of it. We offer certified document translation, face-to-face interpreting, and telephone and video interpreting across more than 300 languages. Each piece of work is completed by a qualified native-speaker linguist and then checked by a second linguist, which keeps standards consistent. Everything we handle stays confidential and compliant with UK GDPR. We arrange linguists throughout Leicester and the wider county area, on site or remotely, whichever suits the situation best.

Bulgarian Translator Leicester FAQs

How much does Bulgarian translation cost in Leicester?

Bulgarian certificates are translated and certified from about £35 per page, with longer files priced per word. Email a scan and we normally send a fixed price within the hour during UK office hours.

Can you certify a Bulgarian translation for UKVI or the Home Office?

Yes, we certify Bulgarian translations for UKVI and Home Office applications. The statement of accuracy is on our letterhead, signed, stamped and dated, and names the translator with contact details; HMCTS, HM Passport Office, the Home Office and UKVI accept it.

How quickly can you translate a Bulgarian document?

A Bulgarian birth certificate or conviction status certificate normally comes back in one or two working days. Same-day is an option for short documents, subject to capacity, and we set a separate deadline for long files.

Do I need to send my original Bulgarian documents?

You keep your original Bulgarian documents; we translate from a legible scan or photo of each page. Hold on to them, since UKVI, HM Passport Office or a register office may want the original next to the translation.

Do you translate English to Bulgarian as well as Bulgarian to English?

We do both. English to Bulgarian translation is done by native Bulgarian speakers, Bulgarian to English by English native speakers fluent in Bulgarian, and every translation is reviewed by a second linguist.

My name is spelt differently on my Bulgarian documents and my passport. Which spelling will you use?

We use the spelling in your passport for every name, because that is what a UK office checks against. Bulgaria fixed an official transliteration system in law in 2009, but older documents may spell a name another way, so point out any difference when you order.

About the Bulgarian Language

Written Bulgarian uses Cyrillic in the 30-letter form left by the 1945 spelling reform. Its Transliteration Act of 2009 set one Latin spelling for official use: the letter for sht is written sht, the hard sign becomes a plain a, and a final -iya is written -ia. Names on papers from before then may differ, and a certified translation follows the passport. Bulgarians carry three names, given name, father's name and surname, and the last two take a feminine ending such as -ova or -eva for women. Dates run day first.
