French Translation Services in Wantage

A French birth record attached to a UK visa application may well have been issued in the Democratic Republic of the Congo or Cameroon rather than in France. French is still the language of the civil registry and the courts across much of West and Central Africa, so our French translation services in Wantage handle a Congolese acte de naissance, a Guinean court ruling and a Paris notaire's deed in the same week. They look nothing alike on the page.

Personal documents are the bulk of it. Property comes next: British owners of houses in France collect notarial deeds when they buy, sell or inherit, and someone here eventually needs them in English.

English to French Translator (and French to English)

Most French translation work runs into English, because a caseworker, a registrar or a solicitor has to know what a document says. English to French translation is the smaller stream. Solicitors order it when writing to a French notaire or court, NHS services and councils for letters to French-speaking residents, and companies for staff or customers abroad.

Settle one thing first: which French? Readers in France, Belgium or Switzerland get European usage. Quebec readers are better served by Canadian French (its language office prefers fin de semaine where a Parisian writes week-end). Tell us where the reader lives. Native English speakers who are fluent in French handle French to English; English to French goes to native French speakers.

Certified French Translation for UKVI, Courts and Universities

A certified French translation is the English text of your document plus a signed, dated and stamped statement on Prism letterhead confirming that it is accurate, with our contact details. That matches paragraph 39B of the Immigration Rules, which asks for a dated translation, confirmation of accuracy, the name and signature of the translator or a company official, and contact details. Applications for leave to remain or indefinite leave to remain also need the translator's credentials, so let us know if yours is one of those. UKVI and the Home Office accept that certificate from us, as do HM Passport Office, HMCTS and British universities.

Congolese files often include a jugement supplétif. Under the law of the Democratic Republic of the Congo a birth should be declared within 90 days; when it was not, a court issues this judgment, and the civil registrar then draws up the birth certificate on the strength of it. So one person's proof of birth can be three documents: the judgment, a certificate that no appeal was lodged, and the acte de naissance. We translate all three as written.

Since 3pm on 4 September 2025 the refugee family reunion route has been closed to new applications, and GOV.UK now directs partners and children towards the family visa, which still turns on proof of the relationship. Register offices want an English translation of any foreign-language document when you give notice of marriage, including a divorce from abroad. UK ENIC is the exception worth knowing about: for its Statement of Comparability it currently takes French qualification documents in the original language through its Translation Waiver, and the waiver itself costs nothing for French. Ask your university or employer whether it still wants English before ordering a degree translation.

Britain has no sworn translators; a signed certificate of accuracy does that job here. France works differently, and a French notaire or court may insist on a translator sworn before a French court of appeal, which a UK certified translation is not. Check with the notaire first. Getting an apostille, if one is needed, falls to you or your solicitor; papers already bearing one translate like any other.

French Documents We Translate

A French town hall issues a birth record in three versions: a full copy (copie intégrale), an extract with parentage, and an extract without it. To prove who your parents are, don't send the extract without parentage: it leaves them out. Any margin notes (mentions marginales) recording a later marriage, divorce or change of name are translated with the rest.

French Legal, Medical and Business Translation

French legal translation is mostly contracts, foreign judgments, statements for tribunal bundles and the paperwork around French property. When an estate includes a house in France a notaire has to deal with it, preparing the acte de notoriété that identifies the heirs and their shares, and the UK executors or their solicitor need it in English. We translate deeds a notaire has already drawn up; we are not notaries. More on our legal translation services.

French medical translation covers hospital letters and test results that a UK clinician has to read, and NHS leaflets or appointment letters going out in French. See medical translation services.

Marketing for France and Canada is where the which-French question bites hardest: a site launched in both may need two French versions (see website translation).

Professional French Translators: Who Does the Work

Two people work on every job: a professional French translator writes the translation, then a second linguist compares it with the original before anything is sent to you. Assignment depends on the paper. A notarial deed goes to someone at ease with French property law; a Congolese court judgment to a translator used to Central African civil records.

Names get particular care. The spelling on your passport or Home Office correspondence is the one we use, accents included, so the translation lines up with the rest of your application. Where a record spells the name differently, we keep the passport form and note the variant.

It is fair to ask any translation provider, us included, whether its translators belong to the ITI or CIOL.

How Much Does French Translation Cost in Wantage?

Certified French translation is priced from about £35 per page; per-word pricing applies to contracts, notarial deeds and anything else long. Send scans through the quote form and you'll normally get a fixed price within the hour (UK office hours). For the reasoning behind our prices, see translation cost.

How Long Does a French Translation Take?

A single French certificate is usually translated and certified in one to two working days. On a quiet day a short document may go out the same day, subject to capacity; see same-day translation. A property file or an appeal bundle gets its delivery date before you commit.

How to Order a French Translation in Wantage

  1. Photograph or scan every page. Margin notes and the reverse of stamped pages count. A flat, well-lit phone photo is normally fine.
  2. Say who will receive it. UKVI, a register office, a notaire in France, a university: the recipient decides the format, and for English to French it decides which French. Give us the spelling of every name as it appears on the passport.
  3. Accept the fixed quote. Your translator works on it, a second linguist checks it, and the certified PDF reaches you by email, with a tracked paper copy where one is needed.

French Translator Near Me in Wantage

There's no Prism office in Wantage, and for a French translator near you there doesn't need to be one. The work arrives as scans and goes back by email, anywhere in the UK. What is local is the destination: the register office taking your marriage notice, the solicitor handling an estate, the college asking about your qualifications.

Confidential French Document Translation

French document translation often involves papers people would rather nobody else saw: an asylum statement, a medical history, a will. We handle all of it under UK GDPR. Your file is opened only by those working on it: your translator, the second linguist and a project manager.

French Translator Wantage FAQs

How much does French translation cost in Wantage?

French translation with certification costs from about £35 per page, and longer French documents are charged per word. Upload your scans and you will normally have a fixed price inside an hour during the UK working day.

Can you certify a French translation for UKVI or the Home Office?

Prism certifies French translations for UKVI and the Home Office as a matter of routine. Each one carries an accuracy statement we sign, date and stamp on Prism letterhead (contact details included), the format used for visa, settlement and British citizenship applications.

How quickly can you translate a French document?

Allow one to two working days for a French birth or marriage certificate. A short one can occasionally go back the same day when capacity allows; longer jobs get their own date.

Do I need to send my original French documents?

You do not need to post original French documents: scans or clear phone photos of each page are enough, margin notes and stamped backs included. Hold on to the originals, since the body receiving the translation may want to see them too.

Do you translate English to French as well as French to English?

Yes, Prism translates English to French as well as French to English. English to French work goes to native French speakers, written for France, Belgium, Switzerland or Canada as the reader needs, while native English speakers handle French to English. A second linguist checks every job.

Will the accents in my French name be kept in the translation?

Accents in a French name are kept wherever your passport shows them. We copy each name exactly as it appears on the passport used for your application, and if a French record writes it another way we add a short translator's note.

About the French Language

French uses the Latin alphabet with accented vowels and the c with a cedilla, and the accents are part of the spelling: French civil status guidance allows them on capital letters too, names included. Surnames on French civil records are written in capitals, and a translation should keep them distinguishable from given names. French dates put the day first, then the month (in lower case), then the year. A married woman may use her spouse's surname day to day, and it can appear on her passport as a married name, but French civil records do not carry it as her surname.
