Inuktitut Interpreter Services
Prism Linguistics arranges Inuktitut interpreter services UK-wide, mostly over video or by phone, because the people who speak the language are concentrated in Arctic Canada and we can find no sign of an Inuktitut-speaking community in Britain. Before matching anyone, we confirm whether the speaker uses Inuktitut or Inuinnaqtun, and which region they come from.

Inuktitut does not get a line of its own in the 2021 Census results for England and Wales. The nearest category in the published main-language table, TS024 on Nomis, is a combined row, North or South American language, which holds 68 people aged three and over. How many of those, if any, speak Inuktitut is not published.
Statistics Canada's report on the Inuktut languages counted 42,800 people in 2021 who could speak an Inuktut language, 41,675 of them Inuktitut. Of those Inuktitut speakers, 60.3% lived in Nunavut and 30.9% in Nunavik, the Inuit region of northern Quebec. A UK request is therefore rare, and the interpreter is most likely to be working from Canada.
Inuktitut interpreting services: face-to-face, telephone and video
Inuktitut interpreting services place a trained interpreter between an Inuktitut speaker and an English-speaking professional, voicing each turn of the conversation in the other language as it happens.
Compared with most of our interpreting services, the extra work comes beforehand: finding someone from the right part of the north who can cover a UK time slot over a reliable link.
English to Inuktitut interpreter (and Inuktitut to English)
An English to Inuktitut interpreter also works from Inuktitut into English in the same session. That second direction often carries more weight, because the speaker's words are what end up in a medical record or a signed statement.
Many Inuktitut speakers also speak English. In Languages in Nunavut, 2021, Statistics Canada found that 93.3% of Inuit in the territory could hold a conversation in English. Everyday English and the English of a consent form are different skills, and an interpreter is usually requested when the stakes rise.
Do not lean on a bilingual relative. The GOV.UK migrant health guide on language interpretation tells clinicians to offer a professional interpreter rather than relatives or friends, and says children should not be asked to interpret.
Inuktitut court interpreters and HMCTS work
An Inuktitut court interpreter renders everything said in the hearing, both ways, without adding, softening or advising. According to the GOV.UK page on getting an interpreter at a court or tribunal, a defendant in a criminal case will be given one; family courts supply one where a case concerns children, domestic abuse or forced marriage; and civil courts do so for certain hearings. A relative or friend may interpret only with the judge's permission.
Tell the court office early whether the person speaks Inuktitut or Inuinnaqtun, and ask whether the judge would accept an interpreter joining by video from Canada. Conferences with counsel and statement-taking fall outside the court's arrangements; book those through our legal interpreting service for solicitors. Prism Linguistics is a private language-services provider and does not present itself as a court-appointed supplier.
Inuktitut interpreters for NHS, police, solicitors, councils and business
No UK body publishes figures on Inuktitut interpreting, so read these as planning notes, not demand data.
- Inuktitut NHS interpreter for GP and hospital appointments
- The NHS England commissioning guidance for primary-care interpreting makes the practice responsible for booking an interpreter and says patients should not be asked to pay. Book a longer slot and test the link. Our healthcare interpreting page covers clinical bookings in general.
- Inuktitut medical interpreter for mental health and maternity
- Feelings and symptoms are often easier to describe in a first language, even for a confident English speaker.
- Inuktitut police interpreter
- An interview under caution cannot wait for a flight from the Canadian Arctic, so a remote interpreter is the realistic route where custody arrangements allow it. Tell us the custody timetable at once. More on police interpreting.
- Solicitors and councils
- Child arrangements where one parent lives in Nunavut or Nunavik, or a council assessment for a relative who has joined family here. Research teams and firms interviewing Inuktitut speakers can use business interpreting.
Face-to-face, telephone or video: which one fits?
With Inuktitut, the realistic choice is usually between video and phone. Video interpreting suits anything long or sensitive, an Inuktitut telephone interpreter handles short practical calls, and face-to-face interpreting means paying for an interpreter to travel, often from North America.
| Mode | Best for | Typical notice |
|---|---|---|
| Inuktitut telephone interpreter | Confirming an appointment, passing on test results, a brief update from a caseworker. | Several days; same day only subject to availability |
| Inuktitut video interpreter | Consultations, solicitor meetings, remote hearings and assessments where faces matter. | A week or more is sensible |
| Inuktitut face-to-face interpreter | A trial or a meeting with a vulnerable adult where a screen will not do. | Weeks, with international travel costs; sometimes not possible |
Lead times for Inuktitut bookings
We have found no evidence of practising Inuktitut interpreters based in the UK, so in-person cover is very limited and remote work is normally the only quick route. Nunavut and Nunavik sit several hours behind Britain, so a UK afternoon is far easier to staff than an early clinic.
Qualified, professional Inuktitut interpreters: what to look for
UK credentials in Inuktitut may be hard to find, so judge a professional Inuktitut interpreter on experience and fit. Ask any interpreter or agency about:
- DPSI
- The Diploma in Public Service Interpreting is a Level 6 qualification awarded by CIOL Qualifications and regulated by Ofqual; whether it runs in a given language depends on candidate numbers. If an interpreter holds it, ask which specialism and language.
- NRPSI
- The National Register of Public Service Interpreters lists people by language; an Inuktitut interpreter may not appear, which is not in itself a warning sign.
- Enhanced DBS
- Commonly needed for custody, wards and work with children. An interpreter in Canada may hold only a Canadian police check, so ask whether that will meet the setting's requirements.
- Public-service experience in the north
- Ask about past work in health, justice or government interpreting in Nunavut or Nunavik, and which region's speech the interpreter grew up with.
When we assign an Inuktitut interpreter, that person is professionally qualified and background-checked; hearings go to court-experienced interpreters, and we arrange an Enhanced DBS where the setting requires one.
Inuktitut dialects and varieties: why it matters at booking
Put the exact language on the booking form. The ISO 639-3 record for iku treats it as a macrolanguage with two members, Eastern Canadian Inuktitut (ike) and Inuinnaqtun (ikt), and from 15 October 2026 its reference name changed from Inuktitut to Canadian Inuktut. The same Statistics Canada report counted 790 Inuinnaqtun speakers in 2021, 65.2% of them in Nunavut and 22.8% in the Inuvialuit region.
The eastern language splits again. Glottolog's entry for Eastern Canadian Inuktitut groups its dialects as North and South Baffin, Kivalliq, and Quebec-Labrador, which covers Nunavik and Nunatsiavut. Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami (ITK) says Inuit can generally understand each other's spoken dialects but find other regions' writing systems harder to read.
That written point matters if the interpreter will read a letter aloud. ITK counts nine Inuktut writing systems, and its 2019 unified spelling, Inuktut Qaliujaaqpait, is based on the Roman alphabet but does not replace syllabics, which regions remain free to use. Ask which script the speaker reads before any sight translation.
How to book or hire an Inuktitut interpreter
Tell us the brief
Give us the date, expected length, venue or video platform and type of appointment, plus where in the north the speaker is from, whether they speak Inuktitut or Inuinnaqtun, and any preference for a male or female interpreter.
We match and price
We look for an interpreter from the right region for your slot, say plainly if only remote work is possible, and send a fixed price, normally within the hour during UK office hours.
Confirm and the interpreter attends
After you accept, we brief the interpreter, test the connection or book travel, and the interpreter joins at the agreed UK time; organisations are invoiced.
Find an Inuktitut interpreter near me: cities and towns across the UK
Searching for an Inuktitut interpreter near me will rarely turn up anyone local, and no official figures support naming towns. The practical answer is an interpreter who joins your own room by video, from Cornwall to Shetland.
How much does an Inuktitut interpreter cost in the UK?
An Inuktitut interpreter's price depends on mode, length, notice, setting and travel. Our published 2026 interpreting prices run from £1.10 to £2.50 a minute by phone and £60 to £120 per 30-minute video session, while face-to-face work is £40 to £75 an hour plus travel, with a two-hour minimum or three for court. Inuktitut, as a rare language, falls at the upper end, and flying an interpreter in adds substantial travel. Send the details through our quote form for a fixed price.
For GP appointments, NHS England guidance says patients should not be asked to pay for interpreting; the practice books the interpreter.
Confidentiality and GDPR for Inuktitut interpreting
What is said through an Inuktitut interpreter stays within that appointment, and we process the personal data involved under UK GDPR. Arctic communities are small, so the interpreter may know the speaker's family; raise any concern at booking and we check for connections first.
Need an Inuktitut translator instead?
For written material such as a letter, a medical report or a certificate, see Inuktitut translation services or Inuktitut document translation. The Inuktitut language services page lists the rest of our work in the language.
Inuktitut interpreting FAQs
How much does an Inuktitut interpreter cost in the UK?
Our 2026 price guide sets phone work at 1.10 to 2.50 pounds a minute, video at 60 to 120 pounds per half hour and face-to-face at 40 to 75 pounds an hour plus travel. Inuktitut is rare, so it sits at the top of those ranges. We confirm a fixed price, normally within the hour during UK office hours.
How quickly can you book an Inuktitut interpreter?
Allow several working days for video or phone and weeks for in-person cover. Same-day sessions are only subject to availability.
Are your Inuktitut interpreters qualified for court and tribunal work?
Our Inuktitut interpreters are professionally qualified and background-checked, and hearings are given to court-experienced interpreters. Check whether the court will allow a video link. Prism Linguistics is a private company and is not appointed by any court.
Do you provide Inuktitut interpreters for NHS appointments?
Yes, usually by video. NHS England guidance for primary care makes the GP practice responsible for booking an interpreter and says patients should not be asked to pay; ask staff to book one when the appointment is made.
Can I book an Inuktitut interpreter by telephone or video?
Yes, and for Inuktitut these are the normal routes, as the interpreter is usually in Canada. Phone suits short calls; video suits longer or sensitive ones.
Can I request a female Inuktitut interpreter?
You can, and we will look for one. The pool is very small, so a gender preference may mean a later date; tell us at the outset and say whether it is essential.
Do you cover Inuktitut interpreting across the whole UK?
Yes. We take Inuktitut bookings from all four UK nations, mostly delivered remotely, with in-person attendance where an interpreter can travel.
Is Inuinnaqtun the same as Inuktitut?
Not quite. Both belong to Inuktut, but ISO 639-3 lists Inuinnaqtun separately from Eastern Canadian Inuktitut, and Statistics Canada found its speakers mainly in Nunavut and the Inuvialuit region. Tell us which one the person speaks.
About the Inuktitut language
Inuktitut belongs to the Inuit branch of the Eskimo-Aleut language family, according to Glottolog. In Nunavut it has official status: the Languages Commissioner of Nunavut explains that the Official Languages Act recognises Inuktut (Inuktitut and Inuinnaqtun), English and French, with a right to use any of them with the territorial government and courts.
Click through to a local page for Inuktitut interpreting in your area. Each one covers the courts, hospitals and councils that bookings in that area usually involve. If your town is not listed, we still cover it; the page just has not been built.
