Kekchi Interpreter Services

Our Kekchi interpreter services are available UK-wide for this Mayan language, also written Q'eqchi', and remote video or telephone cover is often the realistic option. We have found no evidence of regular Kekchi interpreting demand in Britain, so each request is scoped first: the speaker's origin, their other languages, the setting and the date.

The Office for National Statistics gave Kekchi a code of its own for the 2021 Census. In the 552-category main-language classification it appears as entry 78108, next to Chol and Mam. The TS024 main-language table on Nomis, the published figures for England and Wales, has no Kekchi line, so there is no public figure for Kekchi speakers here and this page doesn't offer one.

A Kekchi booking in the UK is unusual, so read this page as a guide to getting one request right, not as a portrait of a large local community.

Kekchi interpreting services: face-to-face, telephone and video

Kekchi interpreting services provide a spoken interpreter between someone whose first language is Q'eqchi' and an English-speaking professional, turn by turn, during a live appointment held in a room, on a phone call or over a video link. As across our interpreting services, speakers pause so each turn is passed on in full.

The spelling on the request matters more than people expect. The ISO 639-3 register kept by SIL files the language under the reference name Kekchí, code kek, as a single living language. Glottolog prefers Q'eqchi', and the catalogues it draws on also record K'ekchí and Ketchi': one language under several spellings.

English to Kekchi interpreter (and Kekchi to English)

An English to Kekchi interpreter carries the professional's words into Q'eqchi' and brings the speaker's replies back into English, so one interpreter covers both directions in a single session. If no direct interpreter is free, the fallback is a two-step chain: Q'eqchi' to Spanish with one interpreter, Spanish to English with a second. It is slower, and we suggest it only once the speaker has agreed.

With a rare language it is tempting to let a bilingual relative help. The GOV.UK migrant health guide on language interpretation tells clinicians to offer a professional interpreter instead of relying on family or friends, and says children should not be asked to interpret.

Kekchi court interpreters and HMCTS work

A Kekchi court interpreter renders the hearing faithfully in both directions, covering evidence, questions from counsel and anything the judge says, without summarising or advising. The GOV.UK page on getting an interpreter at a court or tribunal explains when the court books one itself: always for a defendant in a criminal case, in family cases involving children, domestic abuse or forced marriage, and in some civil hearings. Friends or relatives may interpret only with the judge's permission.

With Q'eqchi', one risk is a listing that simply records the person as Spanish-speaking. If that is wrong, tell the court office well before the date. Conferences and witness statements are booked by the legal team; our page on interpreting for solicitors and the courts explains how that works. Prism Linguistics is a private language-services provider and does not present itself as a court-appointed supplier.

Kekchi interpreters for NHS, police, solicitors, councils and business

No UK data ties Kekchi work to any one sector, so these notes cover what shifts in each setting when the speaker's language is Q'eqchi'.

Kekchi NHS interpreter
NHS England's guidance for primary-care interpreting puts the job of arranging an interpreter on the practice, at no cost to the patient. For Q'eqchi', ask the surgery to book a longer video appointment in advance; our NHS and healthcare interpreting page covers the details.
Kekchi medical interpreter for hospital care
Consent, test results and discharge advice are where a patient who coped at the front desk in Spanish can lose the thread.
Kekchi police interpreter
Under PACE Code C (2023) the interpreter is normally present in person, and a remote interpreter at an interview must work by live link with both sound and picture. See police interpreting.
Councils, schools and employers
Housing visits, school meetings and HR conversations mostly suit video; see interpreting for employers.

Face-to-face, telephone or video: which one fits?

For Q'eqchi', availability on the date usually decides the mode before anything else. A Kekchi telephone interpreter is enough for a quick message about times or medicine. Video interpreting suits most longer appointments, because the interpreter can be anywhere and the speaker sees a face. Face-to-face interpreting is best for a trial, but for Q'eqchi' it may not exist on the day.

Kekchi interpreting modes at a glance
Mode Best for Typical notice
Telephone Short calls, and a first check that the person speaks Q'eqchi' and not another Mayan language. Several working days; same day only subject to availability
Video Clinic visits, recorded police interviews and any Spanish relay. About a week where possible
Face-to-face Contested hearings, if someone can travel. Frequently not possible; ask at the outset

Lead times for Kekchi bookings

Expect to plan in days rather than hours. We can't point to a settled group of Q'eqchi' interpreters in Britain, so in-person cover is limited and a remote interpreter is often the realistic answer.

Qualified, professional Kekchi interpreters: what to look for

UK credentials in Q'eqchi' are unlikely, so put these questions to any interpreter or agency and listen to how they answer:

A public service interpreting qualification
The DPSI is a Level 6 diploma awarded by CIOL Qualifications and regulated by Ofqual. The CIOL DPSI page describes it; ask which specialism and language the interpreter sat it in.
Entry on the NRPSI
Check the National Register of Public Service Interpreters for the person's name and listed languages; with a relay, check both.
Enhanced DBS check
Police stations, hospital wards and work with young people may call for one. Which posts are eligible is explained in the government's DBS eligibility collection.
First-hand Q'eqchi'
Ask how and where the interpreter learned the language. Childhood Q'eqchi' copes with a frightened witness far better than a few classes taken later.

Every Kekchi interpreter we place is professionally qualified and background-checked. Court bookings go to court-experienced interpreters, and an Enhanced DBS is arranged where the setting requires it.

Kekchi dialects and varieties: why it matters at booking

Kekchi is treated by the standards bodies as one language, and the bigger risk at booking is confusing it with a relative. Glottolog's entry for Q'eqchi' places it in the Greater Quichean group of the Mayan family as a branch of its own, alongside Poqomchi' and Poqomam, Uspanteco and the K'iche' and Kaqchikel languages. Kinship does not mean the speaker will follow them, so never substitute one without asking.

Glottolog records the language in Belize and El Salvador as well as Guatemala, and lists no separate dialects. Tell us the speaker's country and home area all the same, and we pass it on. If the second language they use is English rather than Spanish, say so: it changes how a relay would work.

How to book or hire a Kekchi interpreter

Tell us the brief

Give us the date, time and expected length, the venue or video platform, the type of appointment, the speaker's country and home area, the other languages they can manage, and any preference for a male or female interpreter.

We match and price

A direct Q'eqchi' interpreter is our first search. If only remote cover or a Spanish relay can meet your date we say so, and we quote a fixed price, normally within the hour during UK office hours.

Confirm and the interpreter attends

After you confirm, the interpreter is briefed on the setting and joins the call or arrives in person; public bodies and firms are invoiced and private clients pay by card.

Book a Kekchi interpreter

Find a Kekchi interpreter near me: cities and towns across the UK

You can book a Kekchi interpreter from anywhere in England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland. Because no published statistic shows where Q'eqchi' speakers live in Britain, we don't name towns for them here. Usually a Kekchi interpreter near you means a video link, which reaches Plymouth as easily as Inverness.

How much does a Kekchi interpreter cost in the UK?

The cost of a Kekchi interpreter depends on mode, duration, notice, travel, the setting and whether a relay adds a second interpreter. Our published price guide for 2026 lists telephone interpreting at £1.10 to £2.50 per minute, video at £60 to £120 per 30-minute session, and face-to-face at £40 to £75 an hour plus travel, with a two-hour minimum or three hours at court. Rare languages such as Q'eqchi' sit at the upper end of those ranges. Send details via our quote request form to get a fixed figure back, normally within the hour during UK office hours.

An NHS patient shouldn't pay for a GP interpreter; ask the surgery to book one and to log Kekchi, plus the Q'eqchi' spelling, on the record.

Confidentiality and GDPR for Kekchi interpreting

Kekchi interpreters keep everything said in a session confidential, and we process personal data under UK GDPR. A relay interpreter is bound by the same duty of confidentiality. If the speaker fears being recognised, say so and we will try to find an interpreter with no ties to their home area.

Need a Kekchi translator instead?

Interpreters deal with the spoken word. For written material, see Kekchi translation services or Kekchi document translation, and our Kekchi language services page for the full picture.

Kekchi interpreting FAQs

How much does a Kekchi interpreter cost in the UK?

Price turns on mode, length, notice, travel, setting and any Spanish relay. In our 2026 guide, phone work costs 1.10 to 2.50 pounds per minute, a half-hour video session 60 to 120 pounds, and an in-person hour 40 to 75 pounds plus travel; Kekchi falls near the top. Quotes are fixed and normally sent within the hour during UK office hours.

How quickly can you book a Kekchi interpreter?

Allow several working days, a week if you can. We can point to no settled pool of Q'eqchi' interpreters in Britain, so a session is likely to run remotely and same-day cover is subject to availability.

Are your Kekchi interpreters qualified for court and tribunal work?

Each Kekchi interpreter we send is professionally qualified and background-checked, with court-experienced interpreters kept for hearings. You may ask to see a DPSI result or NRPSI entry. We are a private language-services company rather than a court-appointed supplier.

Do you provide Kekchi interpreters for NHS appointments?

Yes, usually best over video, for surgeries, outpatient clinics and community teams, with the invoice going to the NHS organisation. Patients pay nothing, so they should ask the surgery or hospital to make the booking.

Can I book a Kekchi interpreter by telephone or video?

For Q'eqchi', remote booking is normally the only practical route. Phone suits short calls. A recorded police interview needs video, which also works best for long appointments or a relay.

Can I request a female Kekchi interpreter?

Ask and we will try. With so few interpreters, insisting on a woman may mean a later date, so mention it on the first contact, including for any relay interpreter.

Do you cover Kekchi interpreting across the whole UK?

Yes, we take Kekchi requests from all four UK nations on the same terms. Remote cover is the likely route, and someone attends in person only where they can get to the venue.

Can a Spanish or K'iche' interpreter be used for a Kekchi speaker?

Not as a straight swap. K'iche' is a separate Mayan language, and Spanish may be only a second language for the speaker. A Spanish relay can work if the speaker agrees, but a direct Q'eqchi' interpreter is the better choice for anything serious.

About the Kekchi language

Q'eqchi', listed as Kekchi in the UK census codes, is a Mayan language of Guatemala that is also spoken in Belize. Guatemala's constitution makes Spanish the official language while Article 66 commits the state to recognising and promoting indigenous languages, and one of its transitional articles required the constitution itself to be spread in Quiché, Mam, Cakchiquel and Kekchí in the year after it took effect.
