Kiunguju is the variety that Standard Swahili was built on. According to Université Laval's survey of Swahili in world language planning, the standard form was fixed in 1930 by the colonial-era territorial language committee and based on the coastal dialect of Zanzibar, usually spelt Kiunguja. Glottolog files Unguja, with Kiunguja and Zanzibar as other names, as a dialect of Swahili. Mostly, it points to Zanzibar, which has been part of Tanzania since the 1964 union with Tanganyika and keeps its own government. Tanzania's 2022 census initial results counted 1,889,773 people there, 893,169 of them in Mjini Magharibi, the Urban West region of Unguja. Nobody counts Kiunguju speakers in Britain. The 2021 Census main-language table for England and Wales has a single Swahili or Kiswahili row and does not separate Zanzibari speech from the rest, and immigration figures record Tanzanian nationality, which covers islanders and mainlanders alike.

The government's migrant health guidance on interpreting asks clinicians to check the person's preferred language, dialect or variety, and then to check the interpreter's language and dialect against the booking request before the session starts. Kiunguju dialects and varieties: why it matters at booking

Kiunguju is itself a dialect, and the island it is named after has others. Laval's surveys place Kiunguja in Zanzibar City and the area around it, with Kitumbatu and Kimakunduchi (also called Kihadimu) spoken across the rest of Unguja, and Kipemba on Pemba, which Glottolog also lists as a Swahili dialect. So a client described as Zanzibari may not speak Kiunguju at all. Ask which island, and whether town or village.

Other mix-ups come up too. Kenya's coast has its own Swahili dialects, Kimvita around Mombasa and Kiamu on Lamu, so coastal Swahili on a form could mean either. Kingwana, spoken in the Great Lakes region of Congo, is another variety again. And some Zanzibari families speak Arabic at home, according to the same Laval profile, so check which language the client wants.

Booking systems add one more wrinkle. There is no separate ISO 639-3 code for Kiunguju; the international standard files it under swh, Swahili (individual language), so many systems simply list it as Swahili.

About the Kiunguju language

Kiunguju is not a language in its own right but the town dialect of Swahili on Unguja, the more populous of Zanzibar's two main islands. Tanzania's census puts Unguja's three regions at well over a million people, against roughly half a million on Pemba. Because it was the base for the standard, anyone who has learnt Standard Swahili has, in a sense, already met it.
