Luo Interpreter Services

Prism Linguistics supplies Luo interpreter services UK-wide, by video and telephone anywhere and in person where a Dholuo-speaking interpreter can reach you. In Britain, Luo usually means Dholuo, spoken by Kenya's Luo community, though related Lwoo languages from Uganda and South Sudan go by similar names. Tell us the setting and where the speaker comes from.

Kenyan nationals were issued 3,174 Seasonal Worker visas in the year ending June 2026, up from 2,345 in the previous twelve months, according to the Home Office immigration system statistics data tables. Only Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Kazakhstan received more. A Seasonal Worker visa covers up to six months picking fruit, vegetables or flowers, or poultry work between 2 October and 31 December, and it does not let the worker bring family. When a picker from Kenya is injured on a farm or falls ill mid-season, there is often no relative in the country to speak up for them. The same tables show 13,768 visit visas and 2,432 Student visas (main applicants) issued to Kenyans over that year.

Visas are counted by passport, though, not by mother tongue. Kenya's 2019 census found 5,066,966 people of Luo ethnicity in a population of 47,564,296, a little over one in ten, according to the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics census reports. The ONS gives Luo/Dholuo a code of its own (23107) in its detailed main-language classification (Acholi, Alur and Lango have their own codes too), but none of them has a row in the published 2021 main-language table. So nobody can quote an official number of Luo speakers in England and Wales, and we won't invent one.

Luo interpreting services: face-to-face, telephone and video

Luo interpreting services place a trained interpreter between someone who speaks Dholuo and someone who speaks English, so that each hears the other's words in their own language during the conversation, in person, by phone or on screen. Almost every booking is consecutive: the doctor or officer says a sentence or two and pauses, and the interpreter puts it into Luo.

Some English from school is often the reason an interpreter gets skipped. A farm worker who copes with a shift rota in English can still be lost when a nurse explains a tetanus booster. A good Dholuo interpreter notices the polite nod that means the question did not land and asks again.

English to Luo interpreter (and Luo to English)

One person acts as your English to Luo interpreter and your Luo to English interpreter for the whole appointment, switching direction with each turn. Which direction matters more depends on the room. At an A&E discharge desk it is the English going into Luo: how to keep a cast dry, when to come back, which tablets to stop. In a solicitor's office or an interview under caution, the Luo going into English becomes the record that other people rely on later.

A workmate from the same farm, or a teenage son, is often offered as a shortcut. The GOV.UK migrant health guide on language interpretation says clinicians should always offer a professional interpreter instead of leaning on family or friends, and that using children is inappropriate.

Luo court interpreters and HMCTS work

A Luo court interpreter puts every question, answer and direction into the other language in full, without tidying it up or taking a side. Whether the court arranges one depends on the type of case, as GOV.UK's page on court and tribunal interpreters explains. HMCTS gives one to every defendant in a criminal case. In the family court it arranges one where children, domestic abuse or forced marriage are involved, and in civil courts for possession claims, such as evictions, and committal hearings. Relatives can interpret only if the judge says yes before the hearing.

Asylum appeals are one source of Luo tribunal work. The same Home Office tables record 262 asylum claims by Kenyans and 363 by Ugandans in the year to June 2026, dependants included, and 79 of the Kenyan claims came from people who had previously held a Health and Care Worker visa. Ugandan claimants may speak Acholi or Lango rather than Dholuo. Solicitors' conferences and defence witnesses are for the parties to book; see our legal interpreting. Prism Linguistics is a private language-services provider and does not present itself as a court-appointed supplier.

Luo interpreters for NHS, police, solicitors, councils and business

Luo bookings fall into the settings below, starting with healthcare interpreting.

Luo NHS interpreter: GP registration and urgent care
Under the GOV.UK NHS entitlements guide, GP consultations in England are free to everyone and a practice cannot turn a patient away for lacking proof of address or immigration status. That covers a seasonal picker with a hand injury as much as a visiting grandmother with high blood pressure.
Luo medical interpreter: maternity, clinics and mental health
NHS England's primary care interpreting guidance states that patients should not be asked to pay for an interpreter or to bring their own. Antenatal checks, diabetes reviews and talking-therapy assessments are where a mistranslated word does the most damage.
Luo police interpreter
PACE Code C allows, in set circumstances, an interpreter who is not in the custody suite to work by live link. A recorded interview needs sound and picture both ways, while other custody steps can be handled by audio alone. For a language as thinly spread as Dholuo, that can decide whether an interview goes ahead tonight. More on police interpreting.
Solicitors and immigration advisers
Asylum statements, family visa matters and employment claims, with the statement read back in Luo before it is signed.
Councils and schools
Adult social care assessments for an older Kenyan relative now living with family, safeguarding meetings and admissions appeals.
Employers and labour providers
Inductions, welfare meetings, accident investigations and grievance hearings on farms and in packhouses. See business interpreting.
Professional Luo interpreter services in the UK

Face-to-face, telephone or video: which one fits?

For Luo, remote interpreting is usually the realistic first choice and face-to-face the exception you plan for. A telephone interpreter handles short, practical calls well. Video interpreting suits anything long or sensitive, because the speaker can see who is talking. Save face-to-face interpreting for hearings, assessments and meetings where several people talk at once.

Luo interpreting modes at a glance
Mode Best for Typical notice
Luo telephone interpreter Pharmacy questions, GP call-backs, a welfare check on a farm worker. Often the same day, subject to availability
Luo video interpreter Outpatient reviews, solicitor conferences, police interviews by live link. Same day or next day, subject to availability
Luo face-to-face interpreter Trials, capacity and mental health assessments, ward family meetings. Several working days; not always possible locally

Lead times for Luo bookings

Dholuo interpreters are few and live far apart, so an in-person booking depends on where the nearest suitable one happens to be. A remote session can draw on anyone in the country and is normally the quicker route. For a trial or tribunal, a week's notice gives us room to find a court-experienced interpreter and, if the speaker is Ugandan, to check whether a Dholuo interpreter is the right match at all.

Qualified, professional Luo interpreters: what to look for

A qualified, professional Luo interpreter is easiest to recognise by asking direct questions, since no single certificate covers every setting. These are worth putting to any interpreter or agency:

DPSI (Diploma in Public Service Interpreting)
The Level 6 DPSI is awarded by CIOL Qualifications and regulated by Ofqual, as CIOL's DPSI page sets out. Some languages run only when enough candidates sign up, so ask which language and which specialism the interpreter passed in.
National Register of Public Service Interpreters
The NRPSI admits interpreters who meet its qualification and experience criteria and renews registration yearly. Ask whether the interpreter is listed, and in which language.
Enhanced DBS
Expect to need it for custody suites, mental health wards and work with children or vulnerable adults.
Experience of the setting
Ask how many hearings, police interviews or clinical appointments the person has interpreted in Dholuo, not just in English and Swahili.
The right Lwoo language
Confirm that the interpreter speaks the client's own language: Kenyan Dholuo, or Acholi, Lango or Alur if the client is from Uganda.

For our part, every Luo interpreter we assign is professionally qualified and background-checked. Hearings go to court-experienced interpreters, and Enhanced DBS is in place where the setting requires it.

Luo dialects and varieties: why it matters at booking

The word Luo covers more than one language, and booking the wrong one is an easy mistake to make. Kenyan Dholuo sits in the Southern Lwoo group of Western Nilotic languages, according to the Glottolog catalogue of the world's languages. Its closest relative there is Adhola, followed by Alur, with Acholi and Lango a little further off. Shilluk and Anuak belong to a separate Northern Lwoo branch. Related is not interchangeable, and for evidence or a diagnosis a near miss will not do.

The other trap is Swahili. Many Kenyans speak it, so a ward may reach for a Swahili interpreter, but Swahili is a Bantu language from an entirely different family, and an older Luo speaker with little Swahili will be left guessing. Give us the country, and ideally the district, and we will say plainly whether we have a close match.

How to book or hire a Luo interpreter

Tell us the brief

Send the date, time and place or video link, the type of appointment and its likely length, the speaker's country and home area, and whether a woman or a man would put them more at ease, by phone, email or the quote form.

We match and price

We look for a Dholuo or other Lwoo interpreter suited to that speaker and setting, then send a fixed price, normally within the hour during UK office hours, and say straight away if only remote cover is realistic.

Confirm and the interpreter attends

Once you accept, the interpreter is briefed and either arrives at the venue or joins the call; private clients pay by card, and NHS services, solicitors, councils and employers can be invoiced.

Book a Luo interpreter

Find a Luo interpreter near me: cities and towns across the UK

We can arrange a Luo interpreter near you in any part of the UK, but there is no official map of where Luo speakers live. The nearest proxy is birthplace. The 2021 Census country-of-birth table counted 134,944 people born in Kenya living in England and Wales, with 58,020 in London, 19,169 in the South East, 14,512 in the East Midlands, 11,979 in the East of England and 11,137 in the West Midlands; Wales had 1,528. They cover every Kenyan community, so they show Kenyan links, not where Dholuo is spoken. Seasonal workers live wherever the farm is, which is where telephone and video come into their own.

Scotland and Northern Ireland ran separate censuses; we take Luo bookings there as well, and our interpreting services page lists the other languages we cover.

How much does a Luo interpreter cost in the UK?

Five things move the price of a Luo interpreter: remote or in person, duration, notice, travel and the type of appointment. Going by our published 2026 prices, an interpreter in the room costs £40 to £75 per hour on top of travel (minimum two hours, or three for a court booking), a phone interpreter £1.10 to £2.50 per minute, and a half-hour video session £60 to £120. Dholuo is rare in Britain, so quotes usually sit near the top of those bands; remote work avoids the travel element. The quote form brings back a fixed price, normally within the hour during UK office hours.

For a GP or hospital appointment, the NHS service should book and pay. Employers booking a farm induction or accident interview are invoiced directly.

Confidentiality and GDPR for Luo interpreting

Whatever a Luo interpreter hears on an assignment stays private, and the personal data behind each booking is processed under UK GDPR. Dholuo speakers in Britain are not numerous, and two seasonal workers may come from neighbouring villages. If the client is uneasy, tell us before the session; we can name the interpreter in advance and, if there is any connection, bring in someone from elsewhere by video. The interpreter repeats nothing from the session outside it.

Need a Luo translator instead?

Interpreters deal with speech. For paperwork, such as a statement or a letter that needs putting into Dholuo or out of it, see Luo translation services and Luo document translation, or the Luo language services page for all our work in the language.

Luo interpreting FAQs

How much does a Luo interpreter cost in the UK?

Luo interpreting in person costs 40 to 75 pounds an hour plus travel on our 2026 prices, telephone 1.10 to 2.50 pounds a minute and video 60 to 120 pounds a half-hour, with Luo usually near the top because it is rare. Mode, length, notice, travel and setting all count. A fixed quote normally follows within the hour during UK office hours, and NHS patients should not be charged.

How quickly can you book a Luo interpreter?

A Luo interpreter by telephone or video is often possible on the day you ask, subject to availability. In-person Luo interpreting needs several working days because few Dholuo interpreters live near any one town, and in some areas only remote cover will be realistic.

Are your Luo interpreters qualified for court and tribunal work?

We send court-experienced Luo interpreters, professionally qualified and background-checked, and confirm they speak the witness's own Lwoo language. Any interpreter can be asked about DPSI or NRPSI status before the hearing. Prism Linguistics is a private company and not a court-appointed supplier.

Do you provide Luo interpreters for NHS appointments?

Luo interpreters are available for GP practices, A and E follow-ups, clinics, maternity and mental health teams, usually remotely and face to face when someone can travel. NHS teams book on invoice, and a patient should ask the NHS service to arrange the interpreter rather than paying.

Can I book a Luo interpreter by telephone or video?

Remote work is often the best option for Luo. A phone line handles short calls such as a pharmacy query; video suits longer or sensitive appointments and police interviews held by live link.

Can I request a female Luo interpreter?

You can. Mention it at the outset and we will look for a female Luo interpreter for that date before confirming anything. Agreeing to video widens the choice.

Do you cover Luo interpreting across the whole UK?

Yes. We arrange Luo interpreting in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, by telephone or video anywhere and in person where a suitable interpreter can travel to the venue, including farms and rural sites.

Will a Swahili interpreter do for a Luo speaker?

Not reliably. Swahili is a Bantu language and Dholuo is a Nilotic one, so they are unrelated. Many Kenyans know some Swahili, but an older or rural Luo speaker may not follow a detailed medical or legal conversation in it, so ask for a Luo interpreter by name.

About the Luo language

Dholuo, the language most people in Britain mean by Luo, belongs to the Nilotic family and is spoken in Kenya and Tanzania. It is written in the Latin alphabet. At Kenya's 2019 census the Luo were the fourth largest ethnic group, after the Kikuyu, Luhya and Kalenjin; an ethnic count is not a speaker count.
