Mahorian, known locally as Shimaore, is a Comorian variety of the Bantu family and the main everyday language of Mayotte, a French island in the Indian Ocean. There is no settled Mahorian community in Britain, so requests are rare and usually one-offs: an asylum or immigration statement for a Home Office or UKVI case, an identity or civil document, or interpreting for a single appointment, often for someone who also speaks French. Because the language is largely spoken rather than written, the task is mostly interpreting. Around 152,000 people speak Shimaore, chiefly in Mayotte, with smaller numbers in mainland France and Madagascar.
