Mahorian Interpreter Services

Prism Linguistics arranges Mahorian interpreter services UK-wide for speakers of Shimaore, a Bantu language of Mayotte, working mostly by video or telephone because in-person cover is scarce. Solicitors, NHS teams, police and councils can book through us, and we first check whether the client speaks Shimaore, Kibushi or the Comorian of another island.

Mahorian is the name this page uses; linguists catalogue the language as Maore Comorian. Glottolog lists it under the glottocode maor1244, with Shimaore and the French name Mahorais among its alternative names, and its ISO 639-3 code is swb; SIL changed the reference name from plain Comorian to Maore Comorian in 2009. Ask for Comorian without naming the island and you may get someone whose Comorian is not your client's.

Nobody can say how many Mahorian speakers live in Britain. Shimaore gets no separate line in the 2021 Census main-language table for England and Wales, and Home Office figures record nationality, not mother tongue. Mayotte is part of the French Republic, named in Article 72-3 of the constitution, so a traveller from there on a French passport is recorded simply as French. We know of no evidence of a settled Mahorian-speaking community in the UK, so demand here is small and hard to predict.

Mahorian interpreting services: face-to-face, telephone and video

Mahorian interpreting services put a trained interpreter between a Shimaore speaker and an English-speaking professional, relaying each remark as the exchange goes on, in one room, on a phone line or over video. Like the rest of our interpreting services, it is consecutive: short turns, a pause, then the rendering.

Sourcing comes first. Expect the interpreter to join remotely, and if someone must be in the room, tell us early.

English to Mahorian interpreter (and Mahorian to English)

An English to Mahorian interpreter handles both directions in the same session, putting the professional's English into Shimaore and the client's Shimaore back into English. In legal work the riskier direction is into English, since the client's account may later be read out in a hearing.

Where no direct Shimaore and English interpreter is free in time, a relay through French with two interpreters is sometimes the practical answer, but only if the client is truly comfortable in French. Leaning on a bilingual relative is no shortcut either: GOV.UK guidance on interpreting for health professionals tells clinicians to offer a professional rather than family or friends, rules out children, and asks for the preferred language and dialect to be recorded.

Mahorian court interpreters and HMCTS work

A Mahorian court interpreter conveys every question, answer and direction in full and stays neutral. The GOV.UK page on court and tribunal interpreters explains that a criminal defendant is given one, while a defence witness goes through the defence solicitor; family courts supply one in cases about children, domestic violence or forced marriage, and civil courts in possession and committal cases. A relative may interpret only if the judge agrees in advance.

With Shimaore the real risk is a listing with nobody suitable free, so send it the day it arrives and say whether a remote link is allowed. The same page notes that a court interpreter normally works only during the hearing, so a solicitor's meeting with the client is booked separately; our legal interpreting team can arrange those. Prism Linguistics is a private language-services provider and does not present itself as a court-appointed supplier.

Mahorian interpreters for NHS, police, solicitors, councils and business

No UK data shows where Shimaore speakers meet public services, so treat these as the settings where a Mahorian interpreter is most likely to be needed.

Mahorian NHS interpreter
A GP registration, A&E or maternity. NHS England's guidance for commissioners sets out how primary care should provide interpreting, so ask the practice to book it (more on healthcare interpreting).
Mahorian medical interpreter
Consent and mental health assessments, where a matched Shimaore speaker on video beats a rushed relay.
Mahorian police interpreter
Witness accounts and interviews under caution (see police interpreting); tell us the force's vetting rules before we name anyone.
Solicitors, councils and business
Family or housing advice, or a school meeting; ask the client whether they want the detail in Shimaore or in French. Where a business meeting can run in French, our business interpreting team can cover that instead.
Professional Mahorian interpreter services in the UK

Face-to-face, telephone or video: which one fits?

For Mahorian, remote work is the realistic route, not a second best. A video interpreter lets us use the best Shimaore speaker we can find wherever they are based, and a telephone interpreter covers short calls. Face-to-face interpreting is occasional and needs real notice.

Mahorian interpreting modes at a glance
Mode Best for Typical notice
Mahorian telephone interpreter Confirming an appointment, a short update from a caseworker, a pharmacy question. Several working days is safer; same day only rarely, subject to availability
Mahorian video interpreter Clinic reviews, solicitor conferences, assessments, remote hearings where the court allows them. About a week, subject to availability
Mahorian face-to-face interpreter Long or distressing sessions, births, a full day in court. Two weeks or more, and not always possible

Lead times for Mahorian bookings

Treat any Mahorian booking as a rare-language search: send the date as soon as it exists, and agree a fallback (video, or a French relay) in advance rather than cancel on the day.

Qualified, professional Mahorian interpreters: what to look for

With a language this rarely requested in the UK, direct questions matter. Put these to any interpreter or agency:

DPSI
The Level 6 Diploma in Public Service Interpreting is awarded by CIOL Qualifications and regulated by Ofqual, according to CIOL's DPSI page. It runs only in some languages and options, so ask any holder which specialism and language they passed in.
The NRPSI
Ask whether the interpreter appears on the National Register of Public Service Interpreters, and for which language, since a French listing says nothing about Shimaore.
Enhanced DBS
Needed for many hospital, school and custody settings; ask before the booking is confirmed.
Experience, island and gender
Ask how much of their work is really in Shimaore rather than French, and say where the client grew up and whether a woman or a man would suit them.

Any Mahorian interpreter we offer is professionally qualified and background-checked, court work is given to court-experienced people, and Enhanced DBS clearance is held where the setting requires it.

Mahorian dialects and varieties: why it matters at booking

The word Mahorian can hide two unrelated languages. Shimaore is Bantu, and Glottolog files it with Shindzuani, the Comorian of Anjouan, in a Shindzwani-Shimaore subgroup of Comorian. Mayotte's other home language, Kibushi, has its own ISO 639-3 code, buc (reference name Bushi), and Glottolog classes it as Austronesian, the family Malagasy belongs to. A Shimaore interpreter is no use to a Kibushi speaker, so ask which the client uses.

Comorian from other islands is the second trap. In 2017, 48% of Mayotte's residents held a foreign nationality and 95% of those foreign nationals were Comorian, INSEE reported. Someone who lived in Mayotte may therefore speak Shindzuani or another Comorian variety at home rather than Shimaore. For evidence or a diagnosis, book a speaker of the client's own variety.

How to book or hire a Mahorian interpreter

Tell us the brief

Send the date, venue or video link, the purpose and expected length, which island the client is from, whether they speak French, and any wish for a female or male interpreter.

We match and price

We look for a suitable Shimaore speaker and send a fixed price, normally within the hour during UK office hours, saying plainly whether in person, video or a relay is realistic.

Confirm and the interpreter attends

On your approval the interpreter is briefed and attends or dials in as agreed; individuals pay by card, organisations by invoice.

Book a Mahorian interpreter

Find a Mahorian interpreter near me: cities and towns across the UK

Booking a Mahorian interpreter near you works the same in every part of the UK, because no official source shows where Shimaore speakers live and we will not guess. We start from your venue: an interpreter attends if one can reach it, otherwise they join by video. For this language, your postcode matters less than the date.

How much does a Mahorian interpreter cost in the UK?

Mode, session length, notice, travel and setting decide what a Mahorian interpreter costs. Under our 2026 price guide, an interpreter on site is £40 to £75 per hour with travel extra and a minimum of two hours (court, three), a phone interpreter £1.10 to £2.50 per minute, and video £60 to £120 for each half hour. Shimaore has no census row and no known UK community, so quotes sit high in those ranges, and a French relay means two interpreters. The quote form returns a fixed price, normally within the hour during UK office hours.

If the appointment is with the NHS, ask the surgery or hospital to arrange the interpreter rather than booking privately.

Confidentiality and GDPR for Mahorian interpreting

A Mahorian interpreter treats every assignment as confidential, and we handle personal data under UK GDPR. The pool of Shimaore interpreters is small, so if a client fears the interpreter may know their family, say so and we will look for someone with no connection.

Need a Mahorian translator instead?

Interpreting is for speech. A letter, statement or record that has to exist in writing belongs with Mahorian translation services or Mahorian document translation, and the Mahorian language services page lists everything we offer in the language.

Mahorian interpreting FAQs

How much does a Mahorian interpreter cost in the UK?

As a 2026 guide, on-site interpreting costs 40 to 75 pounds per hour with travel extra, phone interpreting 1.10 to 2.50 pounds per minute, and video 60 to 120 pounds per half hour. Shimaore is rare in the UK, so expect the upper end. We confirm a fixed price once we have the details.

How quickly can you book a Mahorian interpreter?

Allow several working days for telephone and about a week for video; same-day cover is uncommon and subject to availability. In person needs two weeks or more and is not always possible.

Are your Mahorian interpreters qualified for court and tribunal work?

For hearings we look for court-experienced Shimaore interpreters who are professionally qualified and background-checked. Prism Linguistics is a private provider, not a court-appointed supplier, and with a language this rare early notice matters.

Do you provide Mahorian interpreters for NHS appointments?

Yes. Surgeries, hospitals and mental health teams can book one through us, usually by video, and are invoiced directly. Patients should ask their NHS service to make the booking.

Can I book a Mahorian interpreter by telephone or video?

Yes, and for Shimaore it is normally the realistic option. Phone suits short calls; video suits longer or sensitive ones, since the client sees who is speaking.

Can I request a female Mahorian interpreter?

You can. Say so at the start, because with so few Shimaore interpreters a preference for a woman is easier to meet with extra notice or over video.

Do you cover Mahorian interpreting across the whole UK?

Yes, all four nations, though most Mahorian work is done remotely and an interpreter attends in person only where one can reach the venue.

Is Mahorian the same as Comorian or Shikomoro?

Not exactly. Mahorian usually means Shimaore, the Comorian of Mayotte, grouped by Glottolog with Shindzuani from Anjouan. Other islands speak related varieties, and Kibushi, also heard in Mayotte, is an unrelated Austronesian language.

About the Mahorian language

Shimaore is spoken in Mayotte, an Indian Ocean island named among the Republic's overseas territories in Article 72-3 of the French constitution, which makes French the language of the Republic and calls regional languages part of France's heritage. Glottolog also records it in the Comoros, Madagascar, Reunion and France. Mayotte had 256,518 residents in September 2017 and was the French department with the fastest population growth, according to INSEE's 2017 population figures.
