Mende is a Mande language of the Niger-Congo family, spoken across southern and central Sierra Leone. Mende speakers in the UK are part of the Sierra Leonean community, roughly 23,000 people, most of them in London with smaller groups in Manchester, Birmingham and other cities, many having arrived during and after the civil war of the 1990s. Krio and English are widely used alongside Mende. Mende has around 2.5 million speakers.
