Mende is one of the two major languages of Sierra Leone, dominant across the south and east of the country, with smaller numbers of speakers over the border in Liberia. It belongs to the Mande family within Niger-Congo and is tonal. Speaker estimates run to around 1.5 million, and Mende serves as a regional lingua franca learned by neighbouring groups. The language has its own indigenous script, Kikakui, a syllabary devised in the early twentieth century and associated with Kisimi Kamara; a small number of users keep it alive, though the Latin alphabet dominates in print and schooling. Mende oral tradition is strong, and the language gained international attention through the Amistad case of 1839, as many of the captives aboard were Mende speakers.
