Mende Interpreter Services
Prism Linguistics supplies Mende interpreter services UK-wide, mostly by telephone and video, with an interpreter in person wherever one can reach you. Requests usually involve asylum and immigration cases, NHS care or family proceedings for Sierra Leoneans from the south and east of the country. Mende interpreters are few, so tell us early.

The Mende are the largest ethnic group in Sierra Leone. At the 2015 census they made up 31.9 per cent of the population, a fraction ahead of the Temne at 31.4 per cent, according to the Statistics Sierra Leone report on population structure. Pujehun district was 95.8 per cent Mende, Kenema 83.4 per cent and Bo 81.9 per cent, yet across the Northern Region the figure was 1.1 per cent. So the part of Sierra Leone a client comes from is the first clue to whether Mende is their language.
On the UK side there is no head count: the 2021 Census for England and Wales put Mende inside a broad group of other West African languages. The Home Office does track Sierra Leonean nationals. By our count of its detailed tables, the citizenship statistics record 17,189 grants of British citizenship to them between January 2005 and June 2026, and the Home Office asylum statistics show that in the year ending June 2026, 163 were granted refugee protection at initial decision and 208 refused. None of these counts language. They do show where the interpreting comes from: settled families with ageing parents, and asylum cases with interviews and appeals attached.
Mende interpreting services: face-to-face, telephone and video
Mende interpreting services provide a professional interpreter who carries spoken English into Mende and spoken Mende into English, completely and as the conversation happens, in the room, on a phone call or over a video link. In public-service settings it is nearly always consecutive, in short turns.
Reading aloud is often part of the job too. Among Sierra Leoneans aged 65 and over, only 22.4 per cent could read and write at the 2015 census, as the census report on the elderly population sets out. Expect letters and consent forms for an older Mende speaker to be read out in Mende (sight translation), and allow time for it.
English to Mende interpreter (and Mende to English)
You need one person, not two: an English to Mende interpreter is the Mende to English interpreter on the same booking, switching direction every time the speaker changes. English words such as remand or biopsy often have no single Mende equivalent, so the interpreter explains the idea in plain Mende and says so. Going into English, the danger is tidying: a long answer full of names, villages and family ties can shrink to one neat sentence.
A bilingual son or niece is not a substitute. GOV.UK advice to health professionals on language interpretation says a professional interpreter should always be offered instead of family or friends, and that children should not be used to interpret.
Mende court interpreters and HMCTS work
A Mende court interpreter turns every question, answer and direction between Mende and English without adding to it, softening it or summarising it, and takes no side. Who arranges that interpreter depends on the hearing, as GOV.UK's page on interpreters at court or tribunal explains. A criminal defendant is given one; a prosecution witness has one found by the prosecuting agency, whereas a defence witness must ask the defence solicitor. Family courts provide one where children, domestic abuse or forced marriage are involved, and civil courts for possession and committal cases. A friend or relative may interpret only with the judge's permission, sought before the hearing.
Everything around the hearing falls to the parties: proofing a defence witness, a conference with counsel, a witness statement for an immigration appeal. Those go through our legal interpreting service. Settle the language well before the listing: a client noted on the file as a Krio speaker may give clearer evidence in Mende. Prism Linguistics is a private language-services provider and does not present itself as a court-appointed supplier.
Mende interpreters for NHS, police, solicitors, councils and business
Immigration casework and health care account for most Mende interpreting in the UK; police and council requests come less often.
- Mende NHS interpreter: GP and hospital care
- Registration, long-term condition reviews, outpatient clinics and A&E. Under NHS England's primary care interpreting guidance patients should not be asked to pay, so the surgery should arrange the Mende interpreter rather than asking relatives to come and interpret. More on our healthcare interpreting page.
- Mende medical interpreter for maternity and FGM care
- The government's multi-agency statutory guidance on FGM lists Sierra Leone among the countries where FGM is widespread, and says the interpreter should not be a family member, should not know the woman and should carry no influence in her community. A female Mende interpreter is the usual request here, and it needs notice.
- Mende police interpreter
- Interviews under caution, custody and statements from victims or witnesses (see police interpreting). The caution must come across in Mende the detainee genuinely follows, which takes longer than the English.
- Immigration solicitors and Home Office interviews
- Screening and substantive interviews, witness statements, appointments for medical reports, and appeals at the First-tier Tribunal. Chiefdom names, kinship terms and dates must be exact, since a slip can later look like an inconsistency.
- Councils and social care
- Housing, adult social care and children's services. Where child protection may be in question, the GOV.UK guidance cited above says the interpreting should be face to face.
- Business
- Rare. Mende business interpreting usually means an employer speaking with one worker about welfare or an injury.
Face-to-face, telephone or video: which one fits?
For Mende the mode is usually decided by who is free and how delicate the conversation is. A telephone interpreter can be connected from anywhere in Britain for short practical calls. Video interpreting reaches just as far and also lets the interpreter see a quietly spoken older client. Face-to-face interpreting is the better choice for asylum interviews, child protection and long assessments, provided a Mende interpreter can travel to you.
| Mode | Best for | Typical notice |
|---|---|---|
| Mende telephone interpreter | Rebooking a clinic, a short housing call, asking whether the client wants Mende or Krio. | Often the same day, subject to availability |
| Mende video interpreter | Solicitor statements, outpatient reviews, remote tribunal hearings, anywhere no Mende interpreter lives nearby. | Usually one or two working days, subject to availability |
| Mende face-to-face interpreter | Asylum interviews, child protection meetings, antenatal care, mental capacity assessments. | Around a week; longer for remote parts of the UK |
Lead times for Mende bookings
Mende is a rare language in Britain, so plan on remote interpreting as the default and arrange in-person attendance early. An interpreter in the room for a hearing or a two-hour assessment needs several working days at least, more if the venue is far from where our Mende interpreters are based.
Qualified, professional Mende interpreters: what to look for
Fluency in Mende and English is a starting point, not proof of interpreting skill. Fair questions for any Mende interpreter, or the agency supplying one:
- DPSI (Diploma in Public Service Interpreting)
- The Level 6 DPSI from CIOL Qualifications is regulated by Ofqual, and a language only runs when enough candidates enrol. If an interpreter mentions it, ask which specialism and language they passed in.
- NRPSI registration
- The National Register of Public Service Interpreters applies entry criteria set separately for each language, may verify certificates with the body that issued them, and requires annual renewal. Ask whether Mende is one of the languages on the interpreter's entry.
- Enhanced DBS
- Commonly required in custody suites, on hospital wards and wherever children or vulnerable adults are present.
- Experience of your setting
- GP appointments and Home Office substantive interviews demand different habits. Ask which settings make up most of their work.
- Background and second languages
- Ask which part of Sierra Leone the interpreter grew up in, and whether they also speak Krio, which matters if your client changes language partway through an answer.
For our part, the Mende interpreters we assign are professionally qualified and background-checked. Hearings and tribunals get court-experienced interpreters, with Enhanced DBS in place where the setting requires it.
Mende dialects and varieties: why it matters at booking
Glottolog lists Ko, Kpa, Sewawa and Waanjama as Mende dialects, but the bigger booking risk is choosing the wrong language altogether. Sierra Leone's 2015 census counted 15 ethnic groups. Mende made up 78.1 per cent of the Southern Region and 54.7 per cent of the Eastern Region, yet Kono district was 61.2 per cent Kono and Kailahun had a sizeable Kissi minority (23.5 per cent). Someone from Port Loko or Tonkolili, both more than 80 per cent Temne, is unlikely to want Mende at all, and Temne, from a different language family, is no help to a Mende speaker.
Krio is the other question. Many Sierra Leoneans use it alongside Mende, yet would rather give a long or painful account in Mende. Ask the client, or their solicitor, before you book. If nobody can tell you, choose Mende: a Mende interpreter who also speaks Krio can follow a switch, whereas a Krio-only interpreter cannot.
How to book or hire a Mende interpreter
Tell us the brief
Give us the date, start time and venue or video link, the type of appointment and its likely length, the client's home district in Sierra Leone if you know it, whether Krio might suit them better, and any preference for a female or male interpreter.
We match and price
We find a Mende interpreter who suits the setting and can realistically attend, compare that with video, and quote a fixed price, normally within the hour during UK office hours, giving the interpreter's name if they will attend in person.
Confirm and the interpreter attends
Once you confirm, the interpreter gets a short brief on the appointment and arrives or dials in at the agreed time; private clients pay by card, and public bodies and law firms are invoiced.
Find a Mende interpreter near me: cities and towns across the UK
A Mende interpreter near you may well be one on your screen. No census output for England and Wales shows where Mende speakers live, and Sierra Leone has no country-of-birth category of its own in the 2021 Census either, so we make no claim that one town has more Mende speakers than another. Prism Linguistics takes Mende bookings across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland: where an interpreter can get to the venue we send one, and elsewhere telephone or video fills the gap.
How much does a Mende interpreter cost in the UK?
The cost of a Mende interpreter depends on the mode, the length of the booking, how much notice you give, travel and the setting. Our 2026 interpreting prices run from £40 to £75 an hour plus travel for face-to-face work, with a two-hour minimum (three hours for court), £1.10 to £2.50 a minute by telephone, and £60 to £120 for each 30-minute video session. Mende is rare in the UK, so prices sit in the upper part of those ranges, and video avoids a long journey. The Mende interpreter quote form gets you a fixed price, normally within the hour during UK office hours.
Book enough time, too: the GOV.UK health guidance suggests an interpreted session takes around double the usual length. For NHS appointments, the surgery or hospital should book and pay. Our interpreting services page covers bookings in every language.
Confidentiality and GDPR for Mende interpreting
Whatever is said during a Mende interpreting session stays confidential, and personal data is processed in line with UK GDPR. The UK's Mende-speaking community is small, so a client may worry that the interpreter knows their family. The GOV.UK health guidance asks staff to check for conflicts of interest before starting; tell us at booking and we will assign someone with no connection, by video from elsewhere if necessary.
Need a Mende translator instead?
Interpreting covers the spoken word. For something written, such as a letter to a relative or a statement that has to go into English, see Mende translation services or Mende document translation; the Mende language services hub lists all our work in Mende.
Mende interpreting FAQs
How much does a Mende interpreter cost in the UK?
Our published 2026 guide is 40 to 75 pounds an hour plus travel for an interpreter in person, 1.10 to 2.50 pounds a minute by telephone and 60 to 120 pounds for each 30-minute video session. Mende is a rare language, so expect the higher end of each range. Send the details for a fixed price, normally within the hour during UK office hours.
How quickly can you book a Mende interpreter?
A Mende telephone interpreter can often be arranged the same day, subject to availability, and video usually within one or two working days. An interpreter in person needs more notice, typically around a week, because few Mende interpreters work in the UK and travel is often involved.
Are your Mende interpreters qualified for court and tribunal work?
Court and tribunal bookings go to court-experienced Mende interpreters, all professionally qualified and background-checked. You may ask the interpreter about their interpreting qualification and whether Mende is on their NRPSI registration before the hearing. Prism Linguistics is a private provider, not a court-appointed supplier.
Do you provide Mende interpreters for NHS appointments?
Yes, for GP surgeries, hospital clinics, maternity units and mental health services, by video, by telephone or in person. NHS teams can book us and be invoiced, and because NHS interpreting is free to the patient, a patient can simply ask the surgery or hospital to book one.
Can I book a Mende interpreter by telephone or video?
Yes, and for Mende it is often the most practical option, because a remote booking can use a suitable interpreter from anywhere in the UK. Telephone works for short calls, while video is better for long or sensitive appointments where seeing the speaker helps.
Can I request a female Mende interpreter?
Yes, ask when you book. It matters most in maternity, gynaecology and FGM-related care, where the statutory FGM guidance also says the interpreter should be neither a relative nor someone the woman knows. With so few Mende interpreters, extra notice or a video booking makes a female interpreter easier to find.
Do you interpret both Mende to English and English to Mende?
Yes. One interpreter works in both directions for the whole appointment, putting the Mende speaker's words into English and everyone else's into Mende, and explaining English technical terms in plain Mende where there is no direct equivalent.
Should I book a Mende or a Krio interpreter?
Ask the client first. Many Sierra Leoneans speak both, and some prefer Krio for everyday matters but Mende for a long or difficult account. If you cannot ask, book Mende, since a Mende interpreter who also speaks Krio can cover a switch between the two and a Krio-only interpreter cannot.
About the Mende language
Mende (ISO 639-3 code men) belongs to the Mande language family. Glottolog places it in the Southwest Mande branch, with Loko as its closest relative and Bandi next, lists it in Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea, and does not class it as endangered. Its heartland is southern and eastern Sierra Leone: at the 2015 census Mende were the majority in Bo, Bonthe, Kailahun, Kenema, Moyamba and Pujehun districts.
