Nzebi Interpreter Services
Nzebi interpreter services from Prism Linguistics are available UK-wide, though for a language of Gabon and the Republic of the Congo with little recorded UK demand, remote interpreting is usually the realistic option. Before searching, we ask where the speaker grew up and which other languages they use, then tell you honestly what cover looks like.

For the year ending June 2026 the Home Office's immigration system statistics data tables record 24 asylum claims from nationals of the Republic of the Congo (listed there as Congo, apart from the Democratic Republic) and four from Gabon, the two countries where Nzebi is spoken. Nine of the Congolese claims followed a visitor visa. In the same twelve months the UK granted 493 entry clearance visas to Congolese nationals, 444 of them for visits, and 377 to Gabonese nationals.
None of those tables records language, and Nzebi has no category in the Census 2021 main-language table (TS024) for England and Wales. The ONS custom-dataset tool does count 3,308 residents born in the Republic of the Congo, but birthplace is not mother tongue, so we quote no UK total for Nzebi and treat each request as a planned search.
Nzebi interpreting services: face-to-face, telephone and video
Nzebi interpreting services place a trained interpreter between someone who speaks Nzebi and an English-speaking professional, and that interpreter carries every turn of a live conversation across in full, by video, by phone or, now and then, in the same room. Most assignments are consecutive (see our wider interpreting services).
Referrals spell the name in several ways. Glottolog's entry for Njebi (njeb1242) gathers Nzebi, Njabi, Ndjabi, Bandzabi, Injebi and Yinzebi among its alternative names, and the ISO 639-3 code table at SIL uses Njebi as the reference name under the code nzb.
English to Nzebi interpreter (and Nzebi to English)
The English to Nzebi interpreter on your booking is also the Nzebi to English interpreter, one person working both ways throughout. A protection claim stands or falls on the Nzebi going into English. A midwife's advice on feeding a newborn only works if the English reaches the mother in Nzebi she will remember at three in the morning.
When an interpreter takes days to find, it is easy to lean on a teenage son. The GOV.UK migrant health guide on language interpretation tells clinicians to use a professional interpreter rather than family or friends and calls children unsuitable for the role.
Nzebi court interpreters and HMCTS work
A Nzebi court interpreter conveys the evidence and the proceedings completely, without trimming or commenting. Who supplies one is set out on GOV.UK's guide to interpreters at court or tribunal. Anyone accused in a criminal case gets one. Family courts provide one where a case concerns children, forced marriage or domestic abuse, and civil courts where a person faces committal or a possession claim over land or property. A relative or friend can interpret only with the judge's prior agreement.
Conferences with counsel and defence witness statements are arranged by the parties (see legal interpreting). With Nzebi, flag the language at the first hearing and agree early whether a relay through French is acceptable if no Nzebi interpreter can attend. Prism Linguistics is a private language-services provider and does not present itself as a court-appointed supplier.
Nzebi interpreters for NHS, police, solicitors, councils and business
Nothing published measures Nzebi interpreting by sector; what follows is inferred from those routes, not counted.
- Asylum screening and the substantive interview
- The Home Office books its own interpreter. Its guidance on conducting asylum interviews lets a caseworker who cannot find the preferred language use the language spoken at screening. Representatives should make sure Nzebi, not only French, is recorded from the start.
- Nzebi NHS interpreter for patients and visiting relatives
- With visit visas making up most grants, an emergency department or GP surgery may be the first contact. In primary care, interpreting is commissioned by the NHS, as NHS England's interpreting guidance for primary-care commissioners sets out (more on healthcare interpreting).
- Nzebi medical interpreter in safeguarding cases
- The GOV.UK guide expects an interpreter to be present wherever there are concerns about a child's safety, with separate interpreters for parent and child; for Nzebi, call us the moment the meeting is set.
- Nzebi police interpreter
- Interviews under caution and victim statements (see police interpreting). Ask early whether a remote link is acceptable.
- Colleges, councils and companies
- Occasional welfare or housing meetings. For company meetings with Gabonese or Congolese partners, ask the visitors first: a French interpreter booked through business interpreting may suit them better.
Face-to-face, telephone or video: which one fits?
For Nzebi, the right mode is usually the one that reaches a suitable interpreter at all. Video interpreting removes distance from the search. Telephone interpreting suits short calls, if the clinician describes aloud anything being shown, as the migrant health guide advises. Face-to-face interpreting is the slowest to staff.
| Mode | Best for | Typical notice |
|---|---|---|
| Nzebi telephone interpreter | Rebooking an appointment, a results call, a quick word from a housing officer. | Days rather than hours; a French interpreter may be quicker if the speaker is happy with it |
| Nzebi video interpreter | Witness statements, outpatient reviews, preparation for a tribunal. | Around a week is sensible, subject to availability |
| Nzebi face-to-face interpreter | Safeguarding meetings, trials, mental capacity assessments. | Several weeks where possible, travel agreed in advance |
Lead times for Nzebi bookings
Send a window of dates, early. Same-day Nzebi cover is rare and always subject to availability. If the search fails, we say so before your deadline and offer a later date or a French relay.
Qualified, professional Nzebi interpreters: what to look for
An interpreter who works in Nzebi may hold any UK qualification in French instead, so put these questions to any interpreter or agency:
- DPSI, and in which language
- The Diploma in Public Service Interpreting is a Level 6 award from CIOL Qualifications, regulated by Ofqual (details on the CIOL DPSI page). An interpreter may hold it in French rather than Nzebi, so ask which language and specialism it covers.
- NRPSI registration
- If an interpreter says they are on the National Register of Public Service Interpreters, check which language their entry covers.
- Enhanced DBS
- Expected for custody suites, hospital wards and work with children or vulnerable adults.
- Proof of Nzebi, not just French
- Ask how their Nzebi was learned and assessed, and in which country.
The Nzebi interpreters we place are professionally qualified and background-checked. Only court-experienced interpreters take hearings, and an Enhanced DBS is in place where the setting requires one.
Nzebi dialects and varieties: why it matters at booking
Glottolog records Nzebi in both Gabon and the Republic of the Congo but lists no separate dialects beneath it. It groups Njebi most closely with Tsaangi, and more widely with Duma, Wandji and others in a cluster labelled Njebi (B.50). We have seen no study of how well speakers from either side of the border, or Tsaangi speakers, follow each other, so we check understanding in the first few minutes.
Then comes the fallback. Article 4 of the Republic of the Congo's 2015 constitution makes French the official language and names Lingala and Kituba as national vehicular languages. A Congolese Nzebi speaker may also handle French, Kituba or Lingala, and one from Gabon may use French, but never assume it; ask the person privately.
How to book or hire a Nzebi interpreter
Tell us the brief
Give us a range of dates, the address or video platform, the length and type of appointment, whether the speaker grew up in Gabon or the Congo, and any other language they use well.
We match and price
We look for a Nzebi interpreter with experience of your setting, then send a fixed price, normally within the hour during UK office hours, along with a straight view of how likely cover is.
Confirm and the interpreter attends
When you accept the quote, the interpreter is briefed and either joins the call or travels to the venue; organisations are invoiced and private clients pay by card.
Find a Nzebi interpreter near me: cities and towns across the UK
We take Nzebi bookings UK-wide, but no official source shows where Nzebi speakers live here, so we name no towns. In practice, a search for a Nzebi interpreter near me is likely to end with a video interpreter, and any in-person visit is arranged case by case.
How much does a Nzebi interpreter cost in the UK?
The price of a Nzebi interpreter turns on mode, length, notice, setting and travel. Our published 2026 interpreting prices run from £40 to £75 an hour for in-person work plus travel, with a two-hour minimum or three hours for court, £1.10 to £2.50 a minute by telephone and £60 to £120 for each 30-minute video session. Nzebi is rare in Britain, so quotes usually fall near the top of each range.
A French relay, if the speaker is happy with it, may be cheaper and sooner. For a firm figure, use the Nzebi interpreter quote form.
Confidentiality and GDPR for Nzebi interpreting
Whatever a Nzebi interpreter hears on an assignment stays private, and personal data is handled under UK GDPR. If a client fears the interpreter knows people at home, say so, and we can try to find someone from a different region.
Need a Nzebi translator instead?
Written material is translated, not interpreted. For a document, a Congolese school record or a letter to be put into Nzebi say, see Nzebi translation services or Nzebi document translation, and the Nzebi language services page for all we offer in the language.
Nzebi interpreting FAQs
How much does a Nzebi interpreter cost in the UK?
In person, 40 to 75 pounds an hour plus travel; by phone, 1.10 to 2.50 pounds a minute; by video, 60 to 120 pounds per 30 minutes. Nzebi normally sits towards the upper end, and a fixed quote usually arrives within the hour during UK office hours.
How quickly can you book a Nzebi interpreter?
Allow several working days for video or telephone and a few weeks in person. Same-day Nzebi cover is subject to availability and seldom possible.
Are your Nzebi interpreters qualified for court and tribunal work?
Only court-experienced Nzebi interpreters, professionally qualified and background-checked, take hearings. Ask which language any qualification covers and how the interpreter's Nzebi was assessed. Prism Linguistics is a private provider, not a court-appointed supplier.
Do you provide Nzebi interpreters for NHS appointments?
Yes, mainly by video or telephone. Surgeries and hospitals can book us on invoice, and patients should ask the NHS service to arrange the interpreter rather than bringing a relative.
Can I book a Nzebi interpreter by telephone or video?
Yes, and for Nzebi a remote booking is usually the quickest route, because distance from the venue stops mattering.
Can I request a female Nzebi interpreter?
You can ask, and we will try, but with so few Nzebi interpreters a gender preference can add days to the search. Mention it when you book.
Is Njebi the same language as Nzebi?
Yes. Njebi is the reference name under the ISO 639-3 code nzb, and Nzebi, Njabi, Ndjabi and Bandzabi are other names for the same language of Gabon and the Republic of the Congo.
Do you interpret both Nzebi to English and English to Nzebi?
Yes. The same interpreter works in both directions from start to finish of the session.
About the Nzebi language
Nzebi is a Bantu language spoken in Gabon and the Republic of the Congo, placed by Glottolog in a small Nzebi-Laali-Yaa group within Narrow Bantu. Glottolog, citing Ethnologue's 2025 assessment, rates it not endangered (level 5*, Developing). Its documentation runs from Paul Belloni du Chaillu's wordlists of the 1860s to Colette Marchal-Nasse's 643-page grammar of 1989. No official speaker count turned up, so none is given.
