Pothwari, also known as Pahari-Pothwari, is an Indo-Aryan variety spoken on the Pothohar Plateau of northern Pakistan, taking in Rawalpindi, and across much of Azad Kashmir, including Mirpur. It sits in a dialect continuum between Punjabi and the Pahari varieties of the hills, and its classification is disputed; speakers themselves use several names, among them Pothwari, Pahari and Mirpuri. Estimates suggest several million speakers in Pakistan. The language is chiefly spoken rather than written, with Urdu serving as the usual written medium. Britain is home to one of the largest Pothwari-speaking populations outside Pakistan, since most British Pakistanis have origins in the Mirpur area, and the speech is common in Birmingham, Bradford, Leeds and Luton. Campaigners in the UK have pressed for its recognition as a community language.
