Pothwari dialects and varieties: why it matters at booking

Pothwari is a place-name as much as a language name. It shares its name with the Pothohar or Potwar plateau of northern Punjab in Pakistan, which Dr Nazir's article names as part of the language area; the Rawalpindi district government profile places the city on that plateau and lists Pothohari among the district's Punjabi dialects, naming the Gujar Khan, Potohar Town and Kallar Syedan tehsils. The same profile reports the district as 90 per cent Punjabi-speaking at the 1998 census. That is the mix-up in a sentence: officially, a Pothwari speaker from Rawalpindi may simply be counted as a Punjabi speaker, and may describe themselves that way.

Spellings vary too. Glottolog's catalogue entry files the language as Pahari Potwari and records Pothohari, Potohari and Potwari among its other names. Dr Nazir's article describes Pahari, Pothwari and Mirpur Pahari as three mutually intelligible dialects, notes that families often just call it apni zaban (my language), and reports that the Mirpuri label is felt by some to describe people from Mirpur rather than their speech. Pahari on its own is ambiguous, because the ISO tables carry separate languages with Pahari in the name, such as Kullu Pahari (kfx). Write Pahari-Pothwari, add the district, and the booking is clear.
