Slovak Translation Services in Kings Cross

Slovak names lose their marks very easily. The caron on a small l or t is printed as a tiny stroke to the right of the letter, so ľ and ť look like an l or a t followed by an apostrophe. Typed in a hurry, Ľubica becomes L'ubica, or just Lubica. Neither is the name in her passport.

Our Slovak translation services in Kings Cross copy each name, birthplace and parent's name exactly as the Slovak record prints it, with every caron, acute accent and the circumflex that sits over the o (ô). If a school, surgery or employer here has been spelling a name without its accents for years, we still follow the certificate and the passport. Mention the older spelling to whoever receives the file and they can link the two.

Much Slovak paperwork in the UK belongs to families who settled here after 2004, when Slovakia joined the EU. The GOV.UK EU Settlement Scheme guidance warns that applicants can be asked to provide a certified translation into English of papers written in another language. A baby born here brings a first British passport application, and HM Passport Office wants original certificates with certified translations, not photocopies. Citizenship applications follow later.

English to Slovak Translator (and Slovak to English)

Private clients nearly always want Slovak to English translation: the certificate came from a Slovak registry, and the official who must act on it works in Britain. Organisations usually need the reverse. English to Slovak translation is for councils and schools writing to parents, NHS services preparing maternity information, and employers whose contracts and safety inductions must make sense on day one.

We split the work by direction. Text going into Slovak is written by a native Slovak speaker, and text coming into English by someone whose first language is English and whose Slovak is fluent. A second linguist then compares it with the source.

Certified Slovak Translation for UKVI, Courts and Universities

Every certified Slovak translation from Prism carries an accuracy statement on our letterhead, signed, dated and stamped, attached to the English text. GOV.UK sets out what certification needs: written confirmation that the English is a true and accurate rendering of the original, the date, and the translator's full name and contact details. It's accepted by HM Passport Office, UKVI, the Home Office, UK universities and HMCTS. The PDF is yours to upload or print; should an office want paper, a copy follows by tracked post.

A multilingual standard form does not replace a certified translation for a passport application. EU countries can issue one to go with a birth or marriage certificate, but HM Passport Office's own guidance on Slovak documents says it does not accept those forms.

The UK has no sworn-translator system; certification is how it works here. Apostilles and legalisation are not something we arrange, so if a receiving body asks for one, you or your solicitor obtain it. A Slovak certificate that already carries an apostille is fine, and we translate the apostille page with the rest.

Slovak Documents We Translate

  • Slovak birth certificate translation (rodný list), for EU Settlement Scheme family applications, citizenship, school admissions and a child's first British passport
  • Slovak marriage certificate translation (sobášny list), the record that shows a bride's surname before and after the wedding
  • Slovak divorce judgments for anyone giving notice of a new marriage here; GOV.UK says an overseas divorce must be checked first, costing £55 when your local register office does it and £83 when it goes to the General Register Office
  • the police certificate, an extract from the register of criminal records (výpis z registra trestov), which GOV.UK says is issued in Slovak only, so an employer vetting a carer or teaching assistant may want it in English
  • degree certificates, diploma supplements and the maturita (the school-leaving exam certificate), wanted by UK ENIC, colleges and university admissions offices
  • driving licence translation, when an employer or insurer asks to see the licence categories in English
  • immigration document translation, from proof of relationship to a parent's identity card
  • medical document translation, such as a child's vaccination record or a hospital discharge report for a UK GP

UK ENIC's translation waiver covers a short list of languages, and Slovak isn't named on it. Budget for a certified English translation of your Slovak diploma before applying for a statement of comparability.

Slovak Legal, Medical and Business Translation

Slovak legal translation for families mostly means court papers. A custody or maintenance decision from a Slovak court may need to go into an English family court bundle, and a UK order sometimes goes the other way for a parent who reads Slovak far better than English. Estates with a house or bank account in Slovakia come up too. Through our legal translation services, the same name, date and case number reads identically on every page of the bundle.

Slovak medical translation covers records brought from Slovakia for a consultant here and NHS leaflets written for Slovak-speaking patients; more on our medical translation services page. Businesses hiring in Slovakia or selling to Slovak customers can add website translation to their contracts and staff handbooks.

Professional Slovak Translators: Who Does the Work

Slovak documents are translated by Slovak translators, not by Czech ones who can follow the text. The two languages are close enough to read each other, but certificate wording, legal terms and spelling differ, and an official translation is no place for a near miss. If a record you send turns out to be in Czech, a Czech translator takes it instead.

Each job is drafted by a professionally qualified Slovak translator who knows the document type. A second linguist then goes through it line by line, checking the names letter by letter, the birth number and every date. Comparing agencies? A fair question for any translator is whether they're a member of CIOL or the ITI, and which Slovak documents they have done before.

Slovak Translator Near Me in Kings Cross

Finding a Slovak translator near you matters less than people expect. The work runs on scans and email, your originals never leave home, and the certified translation reaches you the same way wherever you live. What's local is where it goes next: the register office, the school, your solicitor or your employer in Kings Cross.

Confidential Slovak Document Translation

Slovak document translation handles some very personal data. The birth number on a Slovak certificate gives away a date of birth and sex on its own, and police certificates and court decisions say even more. Nobody outside the team working on your order opens the file. Files travel by secure transfer, and UK GDPR governs how we treat everything in them.

Slovak Translator Kings Cross FAQs

How much does Slovak translation cost in Kings Cross?

For one Slovak certificate, translation plus certification starts from about £35 per page; anything long is charged per word instead. Scan it to us and a fixed figure usually comes back inside the hour while our office is open.

Can you certify a Slovak translation for UKVI or the Home Office?

UKVI and the Home Office both accept Prism's certified Slovak translations. The accuracy statement on our letterhead is signed, dated and stamped, and the same document goes to HMCTS, HM Passport Office and UK universities without changes.

How quickly can you translate a Slovak document?

Birth and marriage certificates and other short Slovak documents are usually done in one to two working days. If it's short and you're in a hurry, same-day may be possible, subject to capacity. Long files get a date of their own once quoted.

Do I need to send my original Slovak documents?

No. Scans or sharp phone photos of all the pages do the job. Hold on to the originals, because HM Passport Office, for example, wants the original certificate sent alongside the certified translation.

My surname ends in -ova and my husband's does not. Will the translation cause a problem?

It shouldn't. Slovak women's surnames normally take the -ova ending, so a wife and daughter can carry a different form from the husband and father. We translate each surname exactly as the certificate records it, and the marriage certificate shows how the names connect.

Is there a Slovak translator near me in Kings Cross?

We have no office in Kings Cross and don't need one: our Slovak translators work from emailed scans, send the certified translation back as a PDF, and send paper by tracked post if an office asks.

About the Slovak Language

Slovak is written in the Latin alphabet with four kinds of diacritic: the caron, the acute accent, the circumflex on ô and the two dots on ä. Ľ and Ĺ are found in no other standard alphabet, which is one reason they get mangled in UK systems. Dates are written day, month, year with full stops, as in 18. 10. 2026. Slovak certificates and identity cards usually carry the birth number, ten digits split by a slash (nine for people born before 1954); the first six give the date of birth, and Slovak law adds 50 to the month for women, so a March birthday appears as 53. That isn't a typing error, and we copy it exactly.
