Sri Lanka's Registrar General's Department issues certified copies of birth, marriage and death entries from its e-BMD records in the language the entry was first written in, and it supplies no translation. For a child registered in Jaffna or Batticaloa that usually means Tamil, so the copy a family orders lands in a UK office as a page nobody there can read.

Much of the Tamil document work we see comes from Sri Lankan families, many of whom came to Britain during the civil war or in the years after it ended in 2009. Their paperwork follows their immigration history. An asylum claim may rest on a police complaint, a court summons or a relative's death certificate; settlement and citizenship come later, then a spouse or parent applies to join them, and each step brings fresh certificates.

The second group is Indian Tamils from Tamil Nadu, many of them here for work or postgraduate study. Their files tend to be shorter: a patta for a parent's farmland, a sale deed, an older birth record kept by a village office.

English to Tamil Translator (and Tamil to English)

Tamil to English is the larger share, because the documents start life in Sri Lanka or India and the people deciding on them in Britain read English. That work goes to native speakers of English who read Tamil fluently.

English to Tamil translation runs the other way: an NHS leaflet before surgery, a council letter about housing, a solicitor's explanation of an asylum decision for a client who reads Tamil far better than English. Here we ask one extra question: is the reader from Sri Lanka or from Tamil Nadu? Written Tamil shares one standard across both countries, yet the two often use different Tamil words for official and technical terms. A native Tamil translator from the reader's side picks the familiar term.

Certified Tamil Translation for UKVI, Courts and Universities

Every Tamil translation we certify carries a signed statement on Prism letterhead, dated and stamped, confirming that the English is a true and accurate translation of the Tamil original. GOV.UK's guidance on certifying a translation asks for that confirmation, the date of the translation, plus the translator's full name and contact details. A certified Tamil translation from Prism is accepted by HM Passport Office, by UKVI and the Home Office, by HMCTS and by universities in the UK. You get a PDF by email, plus a paper copy by tracked post if an office still wants one.

Several UK rules make translation compulsory. Procedure rules for the First-tier Tribunal (Immigration and Asylum Chamber) say that any document sent to the tribunal that isn't in English must come with an English translation. HM Passport Office asks for a certified translation of supporting documents not in English or Welsh. Giving notice of marriage with a partner from abroad? The register office will want any non-English document translated. Tamil isn't among the languages UK ENIC names for its translation waiver either, so expect to send a certified translation of an Indian or Sri Lankan transcript with an application for a Statement of Comparability.

We translate stamps, seals and endorsements already on a document. If an office abroad wants something signed in Britain notarised or legalised, arranging that step is for you or your solicitor.

Small Sri Lankan certificates often carry more stamps than text. Sri Lanka's foreign ministry won't attest a residence certificate from a Grama Niladhari, the village-level officer, unless it carries the officer's name stamp and the Divisional Secretariat's stamp, so both appear in our translation exactly where they sit on the page.

Tamil Legal, Medical and Business Translation

Tamil legal translation for immigration solicitors is careful, literal work. A police report or a magistrate's order goes into an appeal bundle read by the Home Office presenting officer and the judge, so we keep reference numbers, station names and dates as they stand, and mark anything illegible instead of guessing. Our legal translation services also cover family court and probate papers.

Property in northern Sri Lanka can bring Thesawalamai into an estate. It's the customary law of the Tamil inhabitants of the Northern Province, codified by the Dutch in 1707, and it still governs some of their inheritance and matrimonial property. A deed that mentions it keeps the term, with a short translator's note for the English lawyer. Medical work is lighter: Indian discharge summaries, and NHS information going into Tamil (see our medical translation services). Companies selling into Tamil Nadu or Sri Lanka can use our website translation service.

Professional Tamil Translators: Who Does the Work

Your file goes to a professionally qualified Tamil translator who knows the issuing country, and a second linguist checks the English against the Tamil before it's certified. Someone used to Sri Lankan records knows what a Divisional Secretariat is; someone used to Tamil Nadu ones reads a patta without a glossary.

Before you hire any Tamil translator, ask them straight out: are you a member of the ITI, or of CIOL, the Chartered Institute of Linguists? And have you translated documents for a UK asylum appeal before?

How Much Does Tamil Translation Cost in Nottingham?

For a one-page Tamil certificate, translated and certified, prices start from about £35 per page. A thick asylum bundle or a set of deeds is charged per word, and you see the total before you commit. Quotes are fixed and, sent during UK office hours, usually come back inside the hour; the translation cost guide explains what moves the figure.

How Long Does a Tamil Translation Take?

A short Tamil document, a birth or marriage certificate say, normally takes one to two working days. With a tribunal deadline or a passport appointment looming, ask about same-day translation, available on short documents, subject to capacity. Long bundles get their own date in the quote.

How to Order a Tamil Translation in Nottingham

  1. Send a scan of every page. Include the back of each sheet and any stamped slips, and say who will receive it. Your originals stay with you; a clear scan or phone photo is enough.
  2. Show us the passport page. A photo of the photo page lets us copy the name, and the way it is split, exactly. You then get a fixed price and a date.
  3. Get your certified Tamil translation. We email the signed PDF and post a tracked paper copy when one is needed.

Tamil Translator Near Me in Nottingham

Our Tamil translators work from scans, so a Tamil translator near you is really one email away. We don't keep an office in Nottingham. The local part is the reader: an immigration solicitor, a register office, a GP surgery or the council in Nottingham gets the same certified translation.

Confidential Tamil Document Translation

Tamil document translation for asylum files can involve detention records, medical evidence and the names of relatives still living abroad, so very few people see it. Only your translator and the checking linguist open it. We keep personal data in line with UK GDPR, files move by secure transfer, and a solicitor who prefers their own secure portal only has to say.

About Nottingham

Nottingham is a major city in the East Midlands with a large, varied population and a wide spread of employers and public services. With so many communities represented, clear communication across languages is something local organisations deal with often. Solicitors and legal firms need certified translations for a range of client cases. GP surgeries, health centres and clinics book interpreters so patients can describe symptoms and understand their care. The local authority and council services, along with schools and colleges, support residents and families from all over the world, and local businesses require accurate translations for overseas trade. Prism Linguistics helps across the board with certified document translation, face-to-face interpreting, and telephone and video interpreting in over 300 languages. Each job is handled by a qualified native-speaker linguist and then checked by a second linguist, which keeps standards even and reliable. All material is treated confidentially and in line with UK GDPR. We arrange linguists throughout Nottingham and the surrounding towns, either on site or connecting by phone or video, whichever fits the request.

Tamil Translator Nottingham FAQs

How much does Tamil translation cost in Nottingham?

Certifying the translation of a short Tamil certificate costs from about £35 per page. Asylum bundles and deeds are charged per word instead, and if you send your scans in UK office hours the fixed quote usually arrives within an hour.

Can you certify a Tamil translation for UKVI or the Home Office?

We can. Each certified Tamil translation comes with an accuracy statement on Prism letterhead, signed, dated and stamped by us. UKVI and the Home Office accept that form. HM Passport Office, HMCTS and UK universities take the same document.

How quickly can you translate a Tamil document?

A short Tamil document such as a birth certificate is usually ready within one to two working days of you accepting the quote. For a short document we can sometimes deliver the same day, subject to capacity, and a long bundle is given its own date.

I have no family surname and my documents use my father's name. How will the translation show my name?

The translation follows your passport. Many Tamils use a father's given name, or just its initial, in place of a surname, so Sri Lankan and Indian records can order your names differently from each other and from UK forms. We copy the passport spelling and order, and add a translator's note linking any older form.

Do you translate English to Tamil as well as Tamil to English?

Yes, in both directions. NHS, council and solicitors' letters go into Tamil with a native Tamil speaker who writes for a Sri Lankan or Indian reader as needed, Tamil records come into English with a native English speaker, and a second linguist checks each one.

Is there a Tamil translator near me in Nottingham?

Distance makes no difference for written work. We translate Tamil documents from scans for clients in Nottingham and across the UK, email the certified PDF, and post a tracked paper copy to your address when the receiving office wants one.

About the Tamil Language

Written Tamil has its own script, read from left to right. Tamil once had its own numerals too, but modern documents almost always use ordinary Western digits, so dates and register numbers usually carry across as written. Names are where Tamil paperwork goes wrong. Many Tamils have no inherited family name. Someone may appear on a Sri Lankan birth certificate under their father's name and their own, on an Indian record as an initial followed by a given name, and on a UK form with the father's name forced into the surname box. A certified translation has to follow the passport, and where an older record shows the name another way, we say so in a note instead of quietly changing it.
