Temne is one of the principal languages of Sierra Leone, spoken by the Temne people across the north of the country and in the capital, Freetown. It belongs to the Mel group of the Niger-Congo family, unlike its neighbour Mende, and has well over a million speakers, with some estimates approaching two million once second-language users are counted. In daily Sierra Leonean life Temne operates alongside Krio, the national lingua franca, and English, the official language; many Temne speakers move between all three. The language is written in the Latin alphabet, and it carries a strong oral culture of proverbs, storytelling and song within Temne communities at home and abroad.
