Temne Interpreter Services
Temne interpreter services from Prism Linguistics are available UK-wide, with interpreters working face to face, on video or by phone for asylum casework, GP and hospital care, family courts, police and councils. Many Sierra Leoneans who need one live far from London, so we weigh remote options first and travel where the setting calls for it.

At 30 June 2026 the Home Office was supporting 468 Sierra Leonean nationals through the asylum system, and only 49 of them were in London, according to the asylum support tables published by the Home Office in August 2026. That spread shapes how Temne interpreting in Britain gets arranged. Someone housed while a claim is decided cannot pick the town, and the GOV.UK asylum support page warns applicants it is unlikely to be London or south-east England. The interpreter, then, is as often wanted in a dispersal area in northern England or Scotland as in south London.
The same release counted 227 Sierra Leonean asylum claims, dependants included, still waiting for a first decision on that date, and refugee family reunion visas for Sierra Leoneans rose from 12 in 2023 to 58 in 2025. None of this records language, and Temne has no category of its own in the 2021 Census main language table for England and Wales either, so there is no official count of Temne speakers here, and we won't invent one.
Temne interpreting services: face-to-face, telephone and video
Temne interpreting services provide a professional interpreter who turns spoken Temne into English and spoken English into Temne while the conversation is under way, in one room, on a phone line or over a video call. Public-service work is consecutive, a few sentences at a time, so appointments run longer than usual.
With Temne, logistics matter as much as language. The nearest interpreter may live hours from a client housed in the North East, so video carries more of the work, and for most clinic and solicitor appointments that is a sound choice, not a second best.
English to Temne interpreter (and Temne to English)
One booking gives you both directions: the English to Temne interpreter who puts a doctor's or caseworker's words into Temne is also the Temne to English interpreter for every reply. Going into Temne, the hard part is official English: terms such as section 95 support, further submissions or leave to remain often have to be explained plainly rather than matched word for word, without the interpreter adding advice.
Coming back into English, watch for mixed speech. A Temne speaker who grew up in Freetown may drop Krio or English words into a Temne answer, and the interpreter must carry the meaning of all of it. GOV.UK guidance on language interpretation for health staff says a professional interpreter should always be offered and that children should not interpret; if an adult patient still insists on a relative, staff should confirm that choice with the patient alone and record it.
Temne court interpreters and HMCTS work
A Temne court interpreter interprets everything said in the hearing between Temne and English, completely and impartially, for a witness, a party or a defendant. Who arranges that interpreter varies, as the GOV.UK page on getting an interpreter at a court or tribunal sets out. Criminal defendants are given one. The prosecuting agency finds one for its own witnesses, while a defence witness must go through the defence solicitor. Family courts provide an interpreter in cases involving children, domestic violence or forced marriage; in civil courts the automatic cases are possession and committal. For some tribunals the request goes on the appeal form itself, and a friend or relative can interpret only if the judge has said yes beforehand.
That appeal form matters for Temne. If it says Krio, or just names Sierra Leone, a Krio interpreter may be waiting on the day, so make sure the language written down is the one the appellant wants. Conferences with counsel, witness statements and similar work around the hearing are arranged privately, through our legal interpreting service. Prism Linguistics is a private language-services provider and does not present itself as a court-appointed supplier.
Temne interpreters for NHS, police, solicitors, councils and business
Given those Home Office figures, asylum and immigration casework sits near the centre of Temne interpreting in the UK, with healthcare interpreting alongside it; police, council and employer requests arise too.
- Temne NHS interpreter: GP registration and primary care
- Under NHS England's primary care interpreting principles, a patient's language, any preference about the interpreter's gender and relevant cultural identity should be asked about at registration and recorded. Write Temne on that record, not Sierra Leonean or West African, so the right interpreter is booked from the first appointment.
- Temne medical interpreter: maternity and mental health
- The same principles favour keeping one interpreter through a course of sensitive care such as pregnancy or mental health treatment. With so few Temne interpreters, agree early on one person (a woman, if the patient prefers) who can join every session, by video if travel is impractical.
- Home Office interviews and immigration solicitors
- Statements, preparation for the substantive interview and First-tier Tribunal appeals. Dates, journeys and names must come across exactly as the client gives them, because a decision maker compares every version.
- Temne police interpreter
- When someone makes a statement under caution in another language, PACE Code C has the interpreter write it down in that language for the person to sign, with an official English translation made later. So ask whether the interpreter writes Temne with confidence. See police interpreting for custody and interview work.
- Councils, schools and housing
- Housing visits, school admissions for children who came to join a parent, and first meetings with social workers.
- Employers
- Less common: usually a disciplinary or occupational health meeting with a worker who follows Temne better than English (see business interpreting).
Face-to-face, telephone or video: which one fits?
For Temne, the first question is which mode can reach a suitable interpreter at all; suitability comes second. A Temne telephone interpreter is fine for confirming an appointment or a housing repair. Temne video interpreting lets the interpreter see the client's face, which helps in a long statement. Book face-to-face interpreting for custody, a home visit by social workers or anyone who struggles with screens, and expect travel to show in the price.
| Mode | Best for | Typical notice |
|---|---|---|
| Temne telephone interpreter | Appointment changes, a pharmacy question, checking whether a new client wants Temne or Krio. | Often the same day, subject to availability |
| Temne video interpreter | Solicitor statements, GP and outpatient reviews in dispersal areas, video tribunal hearings. | One to two working days, subject to availability |
| Temne face-to-face interpreter | Police custody, in-person hearings, home visits, clients who cannot manage a screen. | Several working days, longer where travel is far |
Lead times for Temne bookings
Temne is a rare language in Britain and in-person cover is limited, so remote work is often the realistic route at short notice. When a Home Office interview or tribunal date arrives by letter, send it to us that day.
Qualified, professional Temne interpreters: what to look for
Fluency in Temne and English alone does not make someone a reliable interpreter for a tribunal or a psychiatric assessment. Points worth checking, whoever supplies the interpreter:
- DPSI (Diploma in Public Service Interpreting)
- A degree-level Level 6 diploma from CIOL Qualifications, regulated by Ofqual; some languages only run when enough candidates sign up (see the CIOL DPSI page). If an interpreter mentions it, ask which specialism and language.
- NRPSI registration
- The NRPSI assesses applicants against its criteria for joining the register, and each language registration lasts a year before renewal. Ask whether Temne itself is on the entry.
- Enhanced DBS
- Often asked for in custody suites, on wards and wherever children or vulnerable adults are present.
- Asylum and clinical experience
- A Home Office interview and a mental health review need different habits. Ask which the interpreter does most.
- The other languages they speak
- An interpreter with Krio as well as Temne can keep up when a client switches; ask about it if your client grew up in Freetown.
For our part, the Temne interpreters we assign through our UK interpreting services are professionally qualified and background-checked, hearings go to court-experienced interpreters, and we arrange Enhanced DBS cover where the setting requires one.
Temne dialects and varieties: why it matters at booking
For Temne the variety question at booking is less about dialect than about which language the person actually wants, because northern Sierra Leone and Freetown are both mixed places. The Statistics Sierra Leone 2015 census report on population structure shows Bombali district as 45.0 per cent Temne, 24.8 per cent Limba and 12.2 per cent Loko, and Kambia, on the Guinea border, as 54.8 per cent Temne and 20.8 per cent Susu. In the Western Area around Freetown the Temne were the biggest group at 40.3 per cent, against 5.4 per cent Krio by ethnicity.
Ethnic group is not language. A Freetown-raised client may be Temne by family yet answer faster in Krio, while a grandmother from a village near Kambia may want Temne and nothing else, so ask the person, not the file. Temne also varies by area, but we know of no official breakdown worth quoting; tell us the home district or chiefdom and we pass it on.
How to book or hire a Temne interpreter
Tell us the brief
Give us the date, time and address or video link, the kind of appointment and its likely length, the client's home district if known, whether Krio might suit them better, and any preference for a woman or a man.
We match and price
We look for a Temne interpreter who knows the setting and can realistically reach it, compare that with video, and send a fixed price, normally within the hour during UK office hours, naming the interpreter for in-person work.
Confirm and the interpreter attends
Once you say yes, the interpreter is briefed and arrives or dials in on time; individuals pay by card before the day, while councils, NHS services and law firms are invoiced.
Find a Temne interpreter near me: cities and towns across the UK
A Temne interpreter near you may be in the next town or on a screen, and the Home Office figures explain why. Of the 468 Sierra Leoneans in asylum support at 30 June 2026, the North West held 85, Scotland 66 and the West Midlands 50, ahead of London's 49; the South East, the North East and Yorkshire and the Humber each had between 42 and 44, and Wales 21. These are nationals in the asylum system, not a count of Temne speakers, and they leave out settled families and British citizens of Sierra Leonean background. We take Temne bookings in all four UK nations.
How much does a Temne interpreter cost in the UK?
Five things drive what a Temne interpreter costs: the mode, the length of the session, notice, travel and the setting. Our 2026 interpreting price guide lists face-to-face work at £40 to £75 an hour plus travel, with a two-hour minimum (three hours for court), telephone at £1.10 to £2.50 a minute, and video at £60 to £120 for each 30-minute session. Temne is rare in the UK, so prices sit near the top of those ranges, and video avoids a long journey. For an exact figure, use the Temne interpreter quote form and you will get a fixed price, normally within the hour during UK office hours.
NHS appointments should be booked and paid for by the surgery or hospital, so patients should ask there first. If a legal aid solicitor is acting, mention it, as they may instruct the interpreter.
Confidentiality and GDPR for Temne interpreting
Anything a Temne interpreter hears on an assignment is kept confidential, and we process personal data under UK GDPR. Even so, a client may hold back if they fear the interpreter knows their relatives, and the health guidance above asks staff to check for conflicts of interest first. Tell us at booking and we will look for an interpreter from another part of the UK, joining by video if needed.
Need a Temne translator instead?
An interpreter deals in speech. For a written piece, such as a Temne letter that has to be read in English or a notice that should reach a Temne-speaking parent, see Temne translation services and Temne document translation, or the Temne language services page for all our work in the language.
Temne interpreting FAQs
How much does a Temne interpreter cost in the UK?
Our published 2026 guide is 40 to 75 pounds an hour plus travel for a Temne interpreter in person, 1.10 to 2.50 pounds a minute by telephone, and 60 to 120 pounds per 30-minute video session. Temne is a rare language here, so prices tend towards the upper end. Send the details and we return a fixed price, normally within the hour during UK office hours.
How quickly can you book a Temne interpreter?
Telephone Temne interpreting can often be arranged the same day, subject to availability, and video within one or two working days. A Temne interpreter in person usually needs several working days of notice, because few interpreters work in the language and travel is often involved.
Are your Temne interpreters qualified for court and tribunal work?
Hearings and tribunal appeals go to court-experienced Temne interpreters who are professionally qualified and background-checked. You may ask the interpreter which interpreting qualification they hold and whether Temne is on their NRPSI registration. Prism Linguistics is a private provider and is not appointed by any court.
Do you provide Temne interpreters for NHS appointments?
Yes. GP practices, hospital clinics, maternity care and mental health teams all use them, by video, telephone or in person. NHS services can book us on invoice. Patients should not be asked to pay or bring their own interpreter, so ask the surgery to record Temne as your language and book one.
Can I book a Temne interpreter by telephone or video?
Yes. Remote booking is often the quickest way to get a Temne interpreter, since we can use a suitable one anywhere in the UK. Telephone suits short practical calls; video is better for statements, clinic reviews and anything long or sensitive.
Can I request a female Temne interpreter?
Yes. Say so when you book, especially for maternity, gynaecology or an account of violence. The Temne pool is small, so a few extra days of notice, or accepting video, makes a female interpreter much easier to secure.
Do you cover Temne interpreting across the whole UK?
Yes: England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. We send a Temne interpreter in person where one can reach the venue in sensible time, and connect one by telephone or video everywhere else.
Do you interpret both Temne to English and English to Temne?
Yes. The same interpreter works both ways for the whole appointment, giving the Temne speaker's words in English and the professional's words in Temne, and explaining official English terms in plain Temne where no direct word exists.
About the Temne language
Temne (ISO 639-3 code tem) is listed by Glottolog under the name Timne, in the Mel group of Atlantic-Congo languages, and is recorded in Sierra Leone and Guinea. The Glottolog entry does not class it as endangered. Its heartland is northern Sierra Leone, where the same 2015 census report found the Temne to be 57.0 per cent of the Northern Region.
