Welsh Interpreter in London
Need a qualified Welsh interpreter in London? Prism Linguistics provides Welsh interpreters for solicitors' conferences and witness statements, council and committee meetings, health appointments, police interviews and bilingual board meetings. We send one to you in London, or patch one into a call or video meeting anywhere in the UK, frequently that same day.
Welsh Interpreting Services in London
Section 22 of the Welsh Language Act 1993 lets any party, witness or other person in legal proceedings in Wales speak Welsh, and the Welsh Language (Wales) Measure 2011 gave the language official status in Wales. That legal footing, not a gap in anyone's English, is behind most requests we get for a Welsh interpreter in London. Someone who works in English all week may still want to give evidence or talk through a diagnosis in the language they grew up speaking.
So the client booking us is often not the Welsh speaker. It may be a solicitor whose client has chosen to make a statement in Welsh, a public body working to Welsh Language Standards, or a company running a bilingual board. Our Welsh interpreting services are built around that kind of request, and we ask whether the speaker comes from the north or the south, since everyday vocabulary differs.
Every Welsh interpreter we assign is professionally qualified and background-checked, with an Enhanced DBS where the setting requires it. We cover English to Welsh and Welsh to English, consecutively at a small meeting and simultaneously, through headsets, when a larger room has to keep moving.
London Welsh Interpreters
Most Welsh interpreters live and work in Wales, so the way we cover London depends on where it sits. Inside Wales there is normally a qualified Welsh interpreter within a short drive. Further away, we either arrange travel for a professional Welsh interpreter or bring one in by video, which is cheaper and keeps the date you wanted.
Bookings from outside Wales are commoner than people expect, not least because patients from Wales are regularly treated in hospitals over the border in England.
Court Qualified Welsh Interpreters in London
In courts and tribunals in Wales, interpretation for a Welsh speaker is simultaneous, and the HMCTS Welsh Language Unit books that interpreter for the hearing itself. A Welsh court interpreter from Prism covers the work around the hearing that the court service does not staff: conferences with counsel, proofing a Welsh-speaking witness, statements taken in Welsh, mediations, arbitrations, employment investigations and professional disciplinary panels.
For courts other than magistrates' courts, the 1993 Act allows rules of court to require notice that Welsh will be spoken, so raise it early. The statutory right attaches to proceedings in Wales; for a hearing anywhere else, tell the court or panel well ahead that a participant wants to use Welsh. For legal work, ask any Welsh interpreter whether they belong to Cymdeithas Cyfieithwyr Cymru, the Association of Welsh Translators and Interpreters, which HMCTS requires for its own Welsh work. Prism Linguistics is a private language-services provider and does not present itself as a court-appointed supplier.
Welsh NHS and Medical Interpreters in London
Health boards and NHS trusts in Wales are covered by Welsh Language Standards, and Welsh Government policy asks staff to make an active offer, providing care in Welsh without the patient having to request it. Where no Welsh-speaking clinician is free, or the patient is being seen in England, a Welsh medical interpreter fills the gap. We provide Welsh interpreters in London for:
- memory and cognitive assessments
- GP, practice nurse and community clinic appointments
- outpatient and pre-operative consultations
- maternity and health visitor appointments
- mental health reviews and speech and language therapy
Language is part of the clinical picture here. Dementia researchers in Wales describe Welsh-language support for Welsh speakers living with dementia as a clinical need, and warn that failing to offer it can raise the risk of inappropriate test results or care. A Welsh NHS interpreter lets the clinician hear the answers the patient would naturally give.
Welsh Interpreter for Home Office and Immigration Appointments
Welsh rarely comes up in asylum cases, but it has a place in nationality law: the British Nationality Act 1981 sets the language condition for naturalisation as sufficient knowledge of English, Welsh or Scottish Gaelic. The commoner need is a Welsh-speaking partner, parent or employer backing someone else's application who prefers to give their account in Welsh, whether to an immigration solicitor, in a supporting statement or at a Home Office interview.
Welsh Interpreters for Police, Councils and Public Services
Welsh Language Standards bind police forces in Wales, county and county borough councils, and fire and rescue authorities, and the Home Office publishes the notice of rights and entitlements for people in police detention in Welsh. In London we supply Welsh interpreters for statements from Welsh-speaking victims and witnesses, interviews under caution, safeguarding and social care meetings, school and housing appointments, and council meetings run in both languages. Forces and councils in England can book us too, when a Welsh speaker in a case has asked to use Welsh. Where vetting is required, we confirm the interpreter holds it first.
Face-to-Face Welsh Interpreter in London
An interpreter in the room works best for a capacity assessment or a board that runs in both Welsh and English. At a one-to-one, a face-to-face Welsh interpreter in London sits beside the speaker and works consecutively. At a bilingual meeting with an audience, simultaneous interpreting through headsets lets Welsh speakers talk in Welsh while everyone else follows in English as they go. To hire a Welsh interpreter for a venue in England, give us a week if you can.
Telephone and Video Welsh Interpreting
Telephone and video interpreting suit Welsh well, because they take travel out of the booking wherever the interpreter happens to live. A Welsh telephone interpreter, through our telephone interpreting service, handles short exchanges such as a pharmacy question or a follow-up after clinic. A Welsh video interpreter, through our video interpreting service, is better when expressions carry meaning. For a meeting with several people, pick a platform that gives the interpreter a separate audio track, so the Welsh speaker can talk at normal pace while others hear English.
How Much Does a Welsh Interpreter Cost in London?
The biggest swing in the price of a Welsh interpreter is distance. A video session carries no travel at all, while an interpreter attending in person in England may face a long trip, and a full day of simultaneous work is usually shared between a pair of interpreters. Duration, notice and the subject matter count as well. Put the details into our quote form; Welsh quotes go out as a fixed price, normally within the hour during UK office hours.
How to Book a Welsh Interpreter in London
- Describe the booking. When, where (or which video platform), roughly how many hours, and the subject. Say if the speaker grew up in north or south Wales, and whether a meeting needs simultaneous interpreting.
- Check the quote. You get a fixed figure, plus the interpreter's name and any travel element when they are attending in person.
- Say yes. We then brief the interpreter with the papers and any agreed terminology. Public bodies can work to a purchase order or a monthly account; individuals pay by card.

About London
London is the UK capital and one of the most linguistically diverse cities in the world, with hundreds of languages spoken across its boroughs every day. At that scale, language support is woven into how countless organisations operate. Solicitors and legal firms across the city need certified translations for immigration, family and commercial matters. GP surgeries, health centres and clinics book interpreters so patients from every background can be understood, and council services along with local authorities support residents in dozens of languages. Schools and colleges work with multilingual families, and local businesses, from small firms to larger employers, need documents translated for customers and partners around the world. Prism Linguistics provides certified document translation, face-to-face interpreting, and telephone and video interpreting in more than 300 languages. Each assignment is handled by a qualified native-speaker linguist and then reviewed by a second linguist, so accuracy is checked before delivery. All work is confidential and compliant with UK GDPR. We cover every part of London, arranging linguists on site or remotely to suit the setting.
Need a Welsh Translator in London Instead?
Written Welsh is a separate job. For a Welsh-language contract, a will, a letter from a council or a school report, use our Welsh translator in London page. Certified Welsh translation from us carries a signed declaration of accuracy on Prism headed paper. Immigration files can go to UKVI and the Home Office with it, legal and passport papers to HMCTS and HM Passport Office, and UK universities take it too.
Welsh Interpreter London FAQs
How quickly can you provide a Welsh interpreter in London?
A Welsh interpreter can usually join by video or telephone on the day you ask. In-person cover depends on distance: inside Wales the next working day is often possible, while further afield we may need a few days to arrange travel. Simultaneous interpreting for a meeting needs the longest lead time.
Are your Welsh interpreters qualified for court and tribunal work?
Court-experienced Welsh interpreters handle our legal work: conferences, witness proofing, mediations and disciplinary hearings. For court and tribunal hearings in Wales, HMCTS books its own Welsh interpreter. Ask any interpreter whether they are a member of Cymdeithas Cyfieithwyr Cymru. Prism itself is an independent firm, and no court has appointed it.
Do you provide Welsh interpreters for NHS appointments in London?
Yes, Prism provides Welsh interpreters for memory assessments, GP and outpatient appointments, maternity care and mental health sessions in London, either at the appointment or over a video link. A Welsh medical interpreter is especially useful when a patient from Wales is being treated at a hospital in England.
Can I book a same-day Welsh interpreter?
A same-day Welsh interpreter is usually possible by video or telephone. A same-day visit is realistic in or near Wales and much harder elsewhere, so ring us early and we will tell you then whether a visit can work.
Do you interpret both Welsh to English and English to Welsh?
Yes, a Prism Welsh interpreter works English to Welsh and Welsh to English from start to finish. At a one-to-one meeting the interpreter alternates between the two languages. At a bilingual meeting with headsets, Welsh contributions are interpreted into English in real time, so Welsh speakers never have to switch language to take part.
Why book a Welsh interpreter if the speaker also speaks English?
A Welsh speaker who also speaks English may still choose Welsh, and that choice belongs to them. In Wales the law gives people the right to use Welsh in legal proceedings and in dealings with many public bodies, and plenty of people put things more precisely in their first language, particularly under stress or when unwell.

About the Welsh Language
Welsh, or Cymraeg, is a Celtic language of the Brythonic branch, a close relative of Breton and Cornish. It uses the Latin alphabet, with digraphs such as ll, dd and ch counted as single letters, and a circumflex known as the to bach that marks a long vowel. At the 2021 Census of England and Wales, 7,349 residents of England gave Welsh as their main language. Speakers in Wales were counted through a separate question, which found 538,300 people aged three or over able to speak Welsh. North and south differ mostly in everyday words (milk is usually llefrith in the north and llaeth in the south), and a Welsh interpreter in London at ease with both will follow any speaker.
