Carolinian Interpreter Services
We arrange Carolinian interpreter services UK-wide, most realistically over video or the phone, for people from the Northern Marianas who are most at ease in Carolinian. Requests here are rare, so before anything is booked we confirm the language, check how much English the speaker is comfortable with, and tell you honestly whether a qualified Carolinian interpreter can be found.

Carolinian has legal status in exactly one place. Article XXII, Section 3 of the Constitution of the Northern Mariana Islands makes Chamorro, Carolinian and English the official languages of the Commonwealth, which became a United States territory under the Covenant of 1975, according to the US Office of Insular Affairs. We know of no source that records a settled Carolinian-speaking community in Britain.
Nothing official counts Carolinian speakers in the UK. The 2021 Census main-language table (TS024) has no Carolinian category, nor one for any Micronesian language, so we give no figure.
Carolinian interpreting services: face-to-face, telephone and video
Carolinian interpreting services place a trained interpreter between a Carolinian speaker and an English speaker, putting each person's words into the other language as the conversation happens, by video, by phone or occasionally in person, in short consecutive turns as described on our interpreting services page.
What decides most Carolinian bookings is how good the person's English really is. Across the Northern Marianas, 74.0 per cent of people aged five and over in households spoke a language other than English at home in 2020, and 52.5 per cent of that group said their English was very good, according to the US Census Bureau's 2020 release for the islands. Those figures cover every home language there, not Carolinian alone, but they show bilingualism is ordinary and fluent English is not. Ask the speaker directly, about something harder than small talk.
English to Carolinian interpreter (and Carolinian to English)
An English to Carolinian interpreter handles the reverse direction too, throughout. Out of English, the hard part is British institutional vocabulary (bail, a care plan, a section under the Mental Health Act) with no ready Carolinian equivalent. Into English, kin terms, island place names and the speaker's own order of events must survive intact.
If the only other Carolinian speaker to hand is a relative, staff may be tempted to use them. The GOV.UK migrant health guide on language interpretation says a professional interpreter should always be offered instead of family or friends, and calls using children inappropriate.
Carolinian court interpreters and HMCTS work
A Carolinian court interpreter turns questions, evidence and the judge's directions into Carolinian and back, completely and without comment. Under the GOV.UK guidance on getting an interpreter at a court or tribunal, a criminal defendant is given one, family courts provide one where children, domestic violence or forced marriage are involved, and civil courts do so in possession and committal cases. A friend or relative may interpret only with the judge's prior permission.
With a language this scarce, raise it with the court office as soon as the case is listed, and test the person's English in conference, not the witness box. We can supply legal interpreting for solicitor conferences and statements. Prism Linguistics is a private language-services provider and does not present itself as a court-appointed supplier.
Carolinian interpreters for NHS, police, solicitors, councils and business
No data shows which UK services meet Carolinian speakers most, so treat this as where a request would make sense, not a forecast.
- Carolinian NHS interpreter: urgent care and GP visits
- Hotel-desk English may not stretch to describing chest pain at 2am. Video is fastest; see healthcare interpreting.
- Carolinian medical interpreter: maternity and mental health
- Long, private conversations where a second language gives way first.
- Carolinian police interpreter
- Statements and cautioned interviews, where the written record has to match the Carolinian actually spoken (see police interpreting). We check the force's vetting rules first.
- Solicitors with a client or witness on the islands
- Family or probate matters where one party gives instructions by video from the Northern Marianas.
- Councils, schools and business
- Safeguarding or school meetings for a visiting family. If a commercial meeting does need Carolinian, our business interpreting page explains how it is set up.
Face-to-face, telephone or video: which one fits?
Availability usually picks the mode for Carolinian before the conversation does. A Carolinian video interpreter is the default for anything long or sensitive, a telephone interpreter suits short calls once a match exists, and face-to-face interpreting depends on a suitable interpreter being in Britain and free to travel. We will not promise it until we know.
| Mode | Best for | Typical notice |
|---|---|---|
| Carolinian telephone interpreter | Checking which language the person speaks, rearranging an appointment, a brief clinical call. | Several working days; same day only subject to availability |
| Carolinian video interpreter | Mental health reviews, solicitor instructions, remote hearings, anything over half an hour. | One to two weeks is realistic |
| Carolinian face-to-face interpreter | A full hearing or assessment where remote working has been ruled out. | Weeks, and not always achievable |
Lead times for Carolinian bookings
Expect longer than for almost any other language. We treat every Carolinian request as a rare-language search and tell you as soon as we know whether a match exists. If the only candidates live on the far side of the world, a UK morning falls late in their day, narrowing the slots.
Qualified, professional Carolinian interpreters: what to look for
Speaking Carolinian is not a credential. Ask any interpreter or agency:
- Which interpreting qualification, in which language?
- The Level 6 Diploma in Public Service Interpreting is awarded by CIOL Qualifications, regulated by Ofqual, and some languages run only when minimum candidate numbers are met (see CIOL's DPSI page). Ask which specialism and language any certificate covers, or what assessment was passed instead.
- Is the interpreter registered with the NRPSI?
- The register's joining criteria include public service experience and the right to work in the UK, so an interpreter based abroad is unlikely to be listed. Ask what other evidence they can give.
- Is an Enhanced DBS check in place?
- Often required on wards, in custody and around children; the government's DBS eligibility guidance sets out which roles need one.
- Saipan Carolinian or Tanapag?
- Compare the interpreter's home community with the speaker's. The next section explains why.
For our part, a Carolinian interpreter we put forward is professionally qualified and background-checked; court work goes to court-experienced linguists, with Enhanced DBS where the setting requires it.
Carolinian dialects and varieties: why it matters at booking
"Carolinian" can mean two languages in the Northern Marianas. The SIL registry gives Carolinian its own ISO 639-3 code, cal, and registers Tanapag separately as tpv. Glottolog's entry for Carolinian lists Saipan Carolinian among its other names, while Glottolog lists Northern Carolinian as another name for Tanapag. Both sit in the small Macro-Carolinian group.
So ask three things. Which island and village is the speaker's family from? Do they call their language Carolinian, Tanapag or something else? And are they also comfortable in Chamorro, the Commonwealth's other indigenous official language? If so, a Chamorro interpreter may be a fallback for a routine appointment, on the speaker's say-so only, and never for evidence.
How to book or hire a Carolinian interpreter
Tell us the brief
Give us the appointment type, its date and likely length, the place or video link, the speaker's home island and village, how they rate their own English, and any wish for a female or male interpreter.
We match and price
We run a rare-language search for a Carolinian interpreter close to the speaker's variety, say plainly if remote is the only realistic option, and quote a fixed price, which normally reaches you within the hour during UK office hours.
Confirm and the interpreter attends
Once you say yes, the interpreter is briefed and a time agreed across both time zones; organisations are invoiced and private clients pay by card.
Find a Carolinian interpreter near me: cities and towns across the UK
You can book a Carolinian interpreter near you anywhere in the UK, but no official source records where Carolinian speakers live, so we name no towns. One video session can link the same interpreter to a GP surgery or a tribunal hearing room wherever it is. The links below cover other places.
How much does a Carolinian interpreter cost in the UK?
Mode, length, notice, travel and setting set the price of a Carolinian interpreter. In our published 2026 price guide, in-person work costs £40 to £75 an hour plus travel (minimum two hours, or three for court), a telephone interpreter £1.10 to £2.50 a minute, and each 30-minute video session £60 to £120. Carolinian, about as rare as languages get here, prices towards the top. The Carolinian interpreter quote form brings back a fixed figure, normally within the hour during UK office hours. For an NHS appointment, the surgery or hospital can book with us directly and be invoiced.
Confidentiality and GDPR for Carolinian interpreting
What is said in a Carolinian session goes no further, and personal data is processed under UK GDPR. Interpreter and client may know the same families back home; tell us if that worries the client, though sometimes nobody more distant exists.
Need a Carolinian translator instead?
Translation deals with the written word. For a letter or statement to be put into Carolinian, see Carolinian translation services or Carolinian document translation; the Carolinian language services page lists all our work in the language.
Carolinian interpreting FAQs
How much does a Carolinian interpreter cost in the UK?
Under our 2026 guide, in-person interpreting costs between 40 and 75 pounds an hour plus travel, telephone between 1.10 and 2.50 pounds a minute, and video between 60 and 120 pounds per 30-minute session, with Carolinian near the top. A fixed quote normally follows within the hour during UK office hours.
How quickly can you book a Carolinian interpreter?
Allow one to two weeks for video and longer for in-person work. Same-day cover is subject to availability and unlikely for Carolinian. We tell you as soon as we know whether an interpreter can be found.
Are your Carolinian interpreters qualified for court and tribunal work?
Court and tribunal bookings go to court-experienced linguists, each professionally qualified and background-checked, and you may question them about their training before the hearing. Send the listing early, as Carolinian interpreters are very few. Prism Linguistics is a private company and is not court-appointed.
Do you provide Carolinian interpreters for NHS appointments?
Yes, usually by video or telephone. Surgeries and hospitals book directly and receive an invoice, and GOV.UK guidance says a professional interpreter should be offered rather than a family member.
Can I book a Carolinian interpreter by telephone or video?
Yes. Remote work is normally the realistic choice for Carolinian, since the interpreter need not be near you. Video suits long or sensitive sessions; telephone suits short calls.
Can I request a female Carolinian interpreter?
Yes, though the choice is very narrow. Tell us at the outset whether a woman is essential, for example at a maternity appointment, or only preferred.
Do you cover Carolinian interpreting across the whole UK?
Yes. Video and telephone sessions reach any address in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. In-person work depends on a suitable interpreter being able to travel, which we confirm before quoting.
Is Carolinian the same as Tanapag or Chamorro?
No. Tanapag, sometimes called Northern Carolinian, has its own ISO 639-3 code, and Chamorro is a different official language of the Northern Mariana Islands. Tell us the speaker's island, village and name for their language.
About the Carolinian language
Carolinian is an Austronesian language of the Micronesian branch of Oceanic, spoken in the Northern Mariana Islands. Glottolog places it in the Trukic subgroup, inside a Satawalese branch it shares with Tanapag, and rates it as shifting. It is one of the Commonwealth's three official languages, and the constitution puts the traditional Carolinian mwaar on both the official seal and the flag.
