Gagauz Interpreter Services

Prism Linguistics arranges Gagauz interpreter services UK-wide for GP practices, hospitals, solicitors, police and courts, often by video or telephone. No UK statistic counts Gagauz speakers, and many of them also use Russian, so every booking starts with one question: is Gagauz the language this person wants, or would Russian suit them better?

Moldova's 2024 census shows why that question matters. It counted 97,205 people of Gagauz ethnicity and 87,407 who gave Gagauz as their mother tongue, yet only 50,546 who said Gagauz was the language they usually speak, according to the final ethnocultural results from Moldova's National Bureau of Statistics (the count leaves out the Transnistrian left bank and Bender). Russian was the everyday language of 370,599 residents. So a Gagauz speaker in a British clinic may be entirely at home in Russian, or may need Gagauz the moment the conversation turns serious.

The 2021 Census for England and Wales gives Gagauz no line in its main-language table, and we know of no other official count, so we will not guess at a UK community size. Glottolog's entry for Gagauz lists Moldova, Ukraine, Bulgaria, Romania, Greece and North Macedonia, and Ukraine's 2001 census recorded 31.9 thousand Gagauz, 27.6 thousand of them in Odesa region.

Gagauz interpreting services: face-to-face, telephone and video

Gagauz interpreting services put a trained interpreter between a Gagauz speaker and an English-speaking professional, relaying each spoken turn as it happens, by phone, on video or in the room. For appointments and interviews, as across our interpreting services, the usual method is consecutive: one person speaks and pauses, then the interpreter passes it on.

English to Gagauz interpreter (and Gagauz to English)

An English to Gagauz interpreter also puts the Gagauz replies into English, so in a direct booking one person handles both directions. Direct Gagauz and English interpreters are scarce, though, and the fallback is a relay: English goes into Russian, Russian into Gagauz, and every answer travels back the same way. Each extra link costs time and can drop a nuance, so we offer relay only after the direct search fails.

Don't fill the gap with a bilingual grandchild. The GOV.UK migrant health guidance on language interpretation is clear that clinicians should arrange a trained interpreter instead of leaning on relatives, and that asking a child to interpret is inappropriate.

Gagauz court interpreters and HMCTS work

A Gagauz court interpreter must render evidence and the judge's words completely, both ways, adding and omitting nothing. Under GOV.UK's guidance on interpreters at courts and tribunals, criminal defendants receive an interpreter, family proceedings get one from the court when children, domestic abuse or forced marriage are involved, civil courts cover certain hearings, and relatives or friends may interpret only if the judge allows it.

With Gagauz, the sharper question in court is often which language. If a defendant from Gagauzia was interviewed in Russian, the defence may want to check that Russian really was adequate before the trial. That call belongs to the court and the parties. Solicitors needing conferences or civil work outside the automatic categories can book through our legal interpreting team. Prism Linguistics is a private language-services provider and does not present itself as a court-appointed supplier.

Gagauz interpreters for NHS, police, solicitors, councils and business

Gagauz NHS interpreter: GP practices and hospitals
Interpreting in primary care should cost the patient nothing, according to NHS England guidance for commissioners. If the patient asked for Gagauz, get the practice to record Gagauz, not Russian (more on healthcare interpreting).
Gagauz medical interpreter: mental health and maternity
Someone who coped with a check-up in Russian may still want Gagauz for a psychiatric assessment or a hard conversation on a labour ward, and may prefer a female interpreter there.
Gagauz police interpreter
Witness statements, voluntary interviews and interviews under caution, plus the legal consultation beforehand (see police interpreting). Each force sets its own vetting rules, which we check before an interpreter is named, and the record should say which language the person chose.
Councils, schools and business
Care assessments and school meetings with a Gagauz-speaking parent. For trade, note that Moldova's 1994 law on the special status of Gagauzia makes Moldovan, Gagauz and Russian the region's official languages, with correspondence outside the region in Moldovan and Russian, so ask your counterpart before booking business interpreting.

Face-to-face, telephone or video: which one fits?

Remote is often the realistic route for Gagauz, because the few interpreters who work in the language may live hundreds of miles away. Pick a video interpreter where seeing faces helps and a telephone interpreter for quick practical calls; save face-to-face interpreting for long hearings or someone frail or distressed.

Gagauz interpreting modes at a glance
Mode Best for Typical notice
Gagauz telephone interpreter Moving an appointment, a pharmacy query. Pre-book; same day only occasionally, subject to availability
Gagauz video interpreter Outpatient reviews, legal conferences, assessments. Several working days is safer
Gagauz face-to-face interpreter Trials, tribunals, mental capacity assessments, very unwell patients. Aim for a week or more

Lead times for Gagauz bookings

A Gagauz search takes days rather than hours. Say in your request whether the speaker would accept Russian if nobody with Gagauz is free, and whether a relay would do for a short appointment; both answers shorten the search.

Qualified, professional Gagauz interpreters: what to look for

In a rare language, a certificate often covers a different language pair. Questions worth asking whoever you book:

The DPSI, and which language it was in
CIOL Qualifications awards the Diploma in Public Service Interpreting at Level 6, under Ofqual regulation. CIOL's DPSI page notes that a language runs only when enough candidates enrol, so ask which language and specialism the holder sat; a DPSI in Russian tells you nothing about Gagauz.
Registration with the NRPSI
Ask whether the interpreter is on the National Register of Public Service Interpreters, and in which language.
Enhanced DBS
Often required on wards, in custody suites and in safeguarding work. Ask whether it is current.
Evidence of Gagauz itself, and of your setting
Ask where they learned Gagauz and whether they have used it in a court or clinic. Good Turkish or Russian is not proof of Gagauz.

On our side, each Gagauz interpreter we propose has been professionally qualified and background-checked. Court work goes to court-experienced interpreters, with Enhanced DBS arranged wherever the setting requires it.

Gagauz dialects and varieties: why it matters at booking

The name itself can mislead. ISO 639-3 gives Gagauz the code gag and assigns a separate code, bgx, to Balkan Gagauz Turkish, which Glottolog files under Rumelian Turkish rather than Gagauz. A Balkan or Turkish speaker who calls their speech Gagauz may need a different interpreter from someone raised in Gagauzia. Glottolog also splits Gagauz into Bulgar Gagauz and Maritime Gagauzi, so tell us where the speaker grew up.

Glottolog places Gagauz and Turkish in the same West Oghuz group, and 68.2% of Moldova's residents aged three and over said at the 2024 census that they knew Russian. Neither fact means a person will follow a consultant's explanation of a scan in Turkish or Russian, so use those interpreters only if the speaker says so.

How to book or hire a Gagauz interpreter

Tell us the brief

Tell us when and where (an address or a video link), the kind of appointment and its length, where the speaker grew up, whether Russian or a relay is acceptable, and any preference for a female or male interpreter.

We match and price

Our first search is for a direct Gagauz and English interpreter, and we quote a fixed price, normally within the hour during UK office hours; if what we can offer is remote, in Russian or through a relay, the quote says so.

Confirm and the interpreter attends

After you say yes, we brief the interpreter, who rings in, joins the video or comes in person; organisations are invoiced and individuals pay by card.

Book a Gagauz interpreter

Find a Gagauz interpreter near me: cities and towns across the UK

Official statistics give no picture of where Gagauz speakers live in Britain, and we are not going to invent one. Video and telephone sessions work from Cornwall to Shetland, while an in-person Gagauz interpreter near you is looked for job by job, with any travel shown in the quote.

How much does a Gagauz interpreter cost in the UK?

The price of a Gagauz interpreter turns on mode, length, notice, travel and setting. The 2026 figures in our price guide are £40 to £75 per hour in person, with travel extra and a minimum booking of two hours (three for court); £1.10 to £2.50 per minute by phone; and £60 to £120 for each half-hour video session. Gagauz is a rare language, so expect a quote near the top of each band.

A relay through Russian uses two interpreters and costs more than a direct booking. GP patients should not pay for interpreting. For an exact figure, fill in the quote form.

Confidentiality and GDPR for Gagauz interpreting

Nothing a Gagauz interpreter hears on a job is passed on, and we handle personal data in line with UK GDPR. With so few speakers, interpreter and client may share acquaintances in Moldova or Ukraine; if that worries the person, we will find someone else.

Need a Gagauz translator instead?

Interpreting is for speech. For written material, see Gagauz translation services, Gagauz document translation, or the Gagauz language services overview.

Gagauz interpreting FAQs

How much does a Gagauz interpreter cost in the UK?

Gagauz is usually quoted near the top of our 2026 ranges: in person from 40 to 75 pounds per hour with travel extra, by telephone from 1.10 to 2.50 pounds per minute, and by video from 60 to 120 pounds for each half-hour. Once we have the details, a fixed quote normally follows within the hour during UK office hours.

How quickly can you book a Gagauz interpreter?

Remote Gagauz cover usually needs several working days, and in-person cover more. Same-day cover is unusual and always subject to availability; agreeing to Russian or a relay can shorten the wait.

Are your Gagauz interpreters qualified for court and tribunal work?

For hearings we look for a court-experienced interpreter who is professionally qualified and background-checked, and we tell you before you confirm if the best match is a relay through Russian. You are free to ask which qualifications they hold, and in which languages. Prism Linguistics works privately and is not a court-appointed supplier.

Do you provide Gagauz interpreters for NHS appointments?

Yes, often by video or telephone, with in-person cover where an interpreter can travel to the hospital or surgery. GP patients should not pay for interpreting.

Can I book a Gagauz interpreter by telephone or video?

Yes. It is often the most practical choice for Gagauz, because a remote session can draw on an interpreter living anywhere in the country.

Can a Russian or Turkish interpreter be used for a Gagauz speaker?

Only if the speaker agrees. Many Gagauz speakers also use Russian, and Gagauz is related to Turkish, but symptoms, legal rights and evidence are often clearer to them in Gagauz. Ask them and note the answer.

Do you cover Gagauz interpreting across the whole UK?

Yes. Video and telephone Gagauz interpreting reach all of England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland; in-person requests are handled one at a time, with travel priced in.

Do you interpret both Gagauz to English and English to Gagauz?

Yes. A direct Gagauz interpreter works in both directions from start to finish. If a relay through Russian is needed, we say so before you confirm.

About the Gagauz language

Gagauz (ISO 639-3 code gag) is a Turkic language of the Oghuz branch, spoken mainly in Moldova, above all in the autonomous territorial unit of Gagauzia, and in Ukraine's Odesa region. In Gagauzia, 80,026 residents, 77.2% of the population, gave Gagauz as their mother tongue at the 2024 census, with Russian next at 12.1%. Glottolog's endangerment entry classes Gagauz as threatened.
