Oromigna Interpreter Services

Prism Linguistics provides Oromigna interpreter services across the UK, in person, by phone or on video. Oromigna is a name for Oromo found on Ethiopian records; in the language itself it is Afaan Oromoo. A request under this name is a request for an Oromo interpreter, and we confirm that with the client before assigning anyone.

Oromigna is a name, not a separate language. You can see where it comes from in Ethiopia's census of October 1994, as reported in the UN Demographic Yearbook table of population by language: 16,777,976 people were listed under Oromigna, out of a national total of 53,130,779. Look down that list and almost every language carries the same ending. Amharigna, Tigrigna, Somaligna, Affarigna. The pattern belongs to the census naming, not to Oromo, where the language is Afaan Oromoo. That is how the word can reach a UK booking form: copied from an Ethiopian document rather than taken from the client's own words.

So this page is about the label and what to do with it. For who needs Oromo interpreting in Britain and why, see our main Oromo interpreter services page. Don't expect a census figure for the name, either: in the 2021 Census main language table for England and Wales, neither Oromigna nor Oromo has a row of its own, although Amharic does.

Oromigna interpreting services: face-to-face, telephone and video

Oromigna interpreting services are Oromo interpreting services ordered under a different name: a professional interpreter relays everything said between English and Afaan Oromoo, at the appointment, over the phone or on a video call. The work is the same as any booking through our UK interpreting services; only the first conversation differs.

The name is easy to mishandle, because some reference lists don't know it at all. Glottolog's entry for West Central Oromo records Oromiffa, Afan Oromo and Oromoo among its other names, but not Oromigna, so a system that matches names letter by letter can come back empty and quietly default to Amharic. We read the request, ask the client which language they want, and write Oromo on the booking.

English to Oromigna interpreter (and Oromigna to English)

An English to Oromigna interpreter is, in practice, an English to Oromo interpreter, and one person covers both directions for the whole session. Some Amharic may surface. A client who dealt with officials in Amharic for years may use an Amharic word for an office or a certificate; a careful interpreter keeps to Oromo, spots the borrowing and asks when it is ambiguous.

An Amharic-speaking friend is no substitute. NHS England's guidance for primary care strongly discourages relying on family, friends or unqualified interpreters. If a patient insists, their informed consent should be asked for in their own language, away from that person, and noted. Nobody under 16 should interpret unless immediate and necessary treatment is needed, and an appointment with an interpreter typically needs about twice the usual time.

Oromigna court interpreters and HMCTS work

An Oromigna court interpreter is an Oromo interpreter who renders the proceedings in full, both ways, and takes no side. Under the arrangements on GOV.UK's court and tribunal interpreters page, criminal defendants receive one. Family courts provide one where a case involves children, domestic abuse or forced marriage, and civil courts do so for certain hearings. A relative or friend can interpret only if the judge agrees.

On the request itself, write "Oromo (Afaan Oromoo)" rather than Oromigna. Representatives booking their own interpreter for a conference or witness statement can come to us directly through our interpreters for solicitors and legal teams page. Prism Linguistics is a private language-services provider and does not present itself as a court-appointed supplier.

Oromigna interpreters for NHS, police, solicitors, councils and business

Across all of these, one problem repeats: whatever label sits on the form decides who turns up.

Home Office and asylum casework
Where a claimed place of origin is in doubt, the Home Office country note on Oromos tells decision-makers to consider language analysis testing, where available. A file that says Oromigna in one place, Amharic in another and Oromo in a third invites questions the client did nothing to cause. Representatives should settle on one name early and keep it.
Oromigna NHS interpreter
GOV.UK's migrant health guidance on interpreting wants a patient's preferred spoken language recorded with its dialect, and the interpreter's language, dialect and gender checked against the booking request before the session. "Oromo (Afaan Oromoo)" in the record does that job better than Oromigna. See also our medical interpreters for NHS and private healthcare.
Oromigna police interpreter
PACE Code C requires the written notice of rights to be in a language the detainee understands, and if a detainee complains about the quality of a translation, the custody officer decides whether a further one is needed. An Amharic notice is not automatically right for someone who speaks Oromo. More on police and custody interpreting.
Councils, housing and schools
Drop-down lists may offer Amharic but not Oromo. Add a note saying Oromo, or a parent who wrote Oromigna on an admissions form may get Amharic interpreters for every later meeting.
Charities and employers
Advice sessions and workplace meetings (see interpreters for business).

Face-to-face, telephone or video: which one fits?

Pick the mode for an Oromigna booking by the stakes and by whether an Oromo interpreter can reach you. A telephone interpreter is fine for a short practical call. Video interpreting widens the choice to the whole country. A face-to-face interpreter is worth waiting a few days for when the conversation is long or painful.

Oromigna interpreting modes at a glance
Mode Best for Typical notice
Oromigna telephone interpreter A first call to confirm the client's language, rebooking, a quick pharmacy or benefits question. Often the same day, subject to availability
Oromigna video interpreter Solicitor meetings, follow-up clinic reviews, school meetings, clients far from any Oromo interpreter. Next working day, often sooner, subject to availability
Oromigna face-to-face interpreter Hearings, long statements, first assessments, anyone who struggles with a screen. Several working days; more in rural areas

Lead times for Oromigna bookings

Add a little time to any request headed Oromigna, since the language is confirmed before the search begins. Then it is an Oromo booking from a modest pool: remote cover is quick, in-person cover takes days.

Qualified, professional Oromigna interpreters: what to look for

A qualified Oromigna interpreter is a qualified Oromo interpreter. Worth asking any agency or freelancer:

Is this an Oromo interpreter, or an Amharic one?
The first question for this name. Someone offered for Oromigna should interpret in Oromo as a working language, not be an Amharic interpreter with a little Oromo.
DPSI
The Level 6 Diploma in Public Service Interpreting, awarded by CIOL Qualifications and regulated by Ofqual, and some languages go ahead only when enough candidates enter, as CIOL's DPSI page explains. Ask which language and specialism the interpreter holds it in.
NRPSI
The National Register of Public Service Interpreters sets out its criteria for joining the register. Ask whether the interpreter is registered, and for which language.
Enhanced DBS
Normally expected in custody, on wards and around children. Ask for it.
Setting experience
Ask what tribunal, mental health or safeguarding work they have done in Oromo.

The Oromo interpreters we put forward are professionally qualified and background-checked. Those we send to hearings are court-experienced, and Enhanced DBS is confirmed in advance wherever the venue requires it.

Oromigna dialects and varieties: why it matters at booking

The name Oromigna says nothing about dialect; it simply names the whole language. The international code register gives West Central Oromo its own ISO 639-3 code, gaz, as one member of the Oromo macrolanguage, and the census label does not point to that member or any other. Where the client grew up tells you far more than the word on the form, so ask, and pass it on.

Watch for mix-ups. Handwritten, Oromigna and Amharigna differ by a few letters. "Ethiopian" is a nationality, not a language. Older files can carry Galla, a name from outside sources that is widely regarded as offensive today and should never appear on a booking. And a document that names the language as Oromigna may itself be written in Amharic, so check before asking anyone to read it aloud.

How to book or hire an Oromigna interpreter

Tell us the brief

Give us the appointment details and purpose, the language in the client's own words, any earlier Amharic interviews, and whether a man or a woman would suit better.

We match and price

We confirm the language is Oromo, choose an interpreter who knows that kind of appointment and, where we can, the client's home area, then send a fixed quote.

Confirm and the interpreter attends

Once you accept, the interpreter is briefed and either arrives or joins the call at the agreed time, with the booking recorded under Oromo so the next one goes straight through.

Find an Oromigna interpreter near me: cities and towns across the UK

Wherever you are in England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland, we will look for an Oromigna interpreter near you. With no census breakdown there is no official record of where speakers live, so we tell you at quote stage whether anyone can travel. Our local Oromo interpreter pages are listed below.

How much does an Oromigna interpreter cost in the UK?

An Oromigna interpreter costs the same as an Oromo one, because it is the same booking. In person, our interpreting price guide for 2026 lists £40 to £75 hourly, travel extra, booked for two hours or more (court: three). Phone calls are £1.10 to £2.50 per minute; video is £60 to £120 per half-hour. Oromo, being less common, tends to the top of each band. Mode, length, notice, travel and the setting decide the exact figure, and the quote request form returns a fixed price, normally within the hour during UK office hours.

Confidentiality and GDPR for Oromigna interpreting

Oromigna interpreting is confidential from first call to last: the interpreter keeps what they hear to themselves, and we handle personal data under UK GDPR. The migrant health guidance also asks for a conflict-of-interest check before a session. If a client would rather have someone from outside their community, we look further afield.

Need an Oromigna translator instead?

Written material needs a translator, not an interpreter. Papers in Oromo go to our Oromigna translation services or Oromigna document translation; if a page turns out to be in Amharic, we will say so before quoting. The Oromigna language services page brings everything together.

Oromigna interpreting FAQs

Is Oromigna the same language as Oromo?

Yes. Oromigna is a name for Oromo, which is called Afaan Oromoo in the language itself. Ethiopia's 1994 census used it, alongside names such as Amharigna and Tigrigna. Book under Oromigna or Oromo and you get the same Oromo interpreter, but writing Oromo on forms avoids confusion with Amharic.

How much does an Oromigna interpreter cost in the UK?

Under our 2026 guide, in-person work is 40 to 75 pounds hourly plus travel (minimum two hours, court three), phone is 1.10 to 2.50 pounds per minute, and video 60 to 120 pounds per half-hour, with Oromo near the upper end. A fixed price follows your request, normally within the hour during UK office hours.

How quickly can you book an Oromigna interpreter?

After we confirm the language is Oromo, remote cover is frequently arranged on the day, subject to availability. Allow several working days for someone in person, more in rural areas or for a woman interpreter.

Are your Oromigna interpreters qualified for court and tribunal work?

Hearings get court-experienced Oromo interpreters, all professionally qualified and background-checked; ask us about DPSI or NRPSI status in advance. Prism Linguistics is a private provider, not a court-appointed supplier.

Do you provide Oromigna interpreters for NHS appointments?

Yes, for GP practices, hospital clinics, maternity and mental health services, in person or remotely. It helps if the patient record says Oromo (Afaan Oromoo) rather than Oromigna, so every later booking reaches the right interpreter.

Can I book an Oromigna interpreter by telephone or video?

Yes, and remote is often quickest, drawing on Oromo interpreters nationwide. Use the phone for brief calls and video when a meeting runs long or involves papers.

Can I request a female Oromigna interpreter?

Yes. Say so at booking; we accept only once a woman is confirmed, and early notice helps because the Oromo pool is small to begin with.

Do you interpret both Oromigna to English and English to Oromigna?

Yes, both ways, with one interpreter for the whole appointment and no switching into Amharic.

About the Oromigna language

Oromigna is another name for Oromo, which Glottolog places in the Cushitic branch of the Afro-Asiatic family. The 1994 census table that uses the name also shows how rural its speakers were then: 15,510,667 of those listed under Oromigna lived outside towns. In Oromo the language is Afaan Oromoo, and that is the name to use with clients.
