Sorani Interpreting Services in Leicester
Under Iraq's 2005 constitution, Kurdish and Arabic are the country's two official languages, and Sorani is the dominant written form of Kurdish in the Kurdistan Region. Since the region won self-rule in 1991, its classrooms have taught mainly in Kurdish, and plenty of younger Iraqi Kurds have only school-level Arabic. So an Arabic interpreter is not a stand-in for a Sorani speaker from Erbil or Sulaymaniyah, however handy one may be on the day.
Sorani is also spoken over the border, in Iran's Kurdistan province and parts of Kermanshah and West Azerbaijan. Kurds there were schooled in Persian, which Iran's constitution makes the language of textbooks and official papers. An Iranian Kurd may read Persian comfortably and still want every spoken question put to them in Kurdish.
Both countries show up in the latest Home Office figures. In the year ending June 2026 Iran was one of the six nationalities making the most asylum claims in the UK, Iranians made up 11 per cent of small boat arrivals, and Iraqis and Iranians together were 28 per cent of people detected after they had already entered the country. Those tables record nationality, not mother tongue. Still, much of our Sorani interpreting in Leicester begins on that route.
Our Sorani interpreters are all professionally qualified and background-checked. Enhanced DBS clearance is confirmed before we send anyone into a setting that requires it. Our Sorani interpreting services run English into Sorani and Sorani into English, consecutively for almost every appointment.
Leicester Sorani Interpreters
Sorani interpreters are thinly and unevenly spread across Britain. For an in-person job in Leicester we search our national register for the closest suitable person, and if they have a fair distance to travel we tell you before you commit.
Very often, whoever needs a Sorani interpreter near you is a recent arrival with a claim still pending, or a spouse who has joined a partner here and has had little chance to learn English. Sometimes it is a grandfather who came in the 1990s and has coped in English for decades, until a consultant starts explaining a scan. Please don't hand the job to a teenage son or daughter. Children shouldn't carry adult medical or legal news.
Court Qualified Sorani Interpreters in Leicester
The First-tier Tribunal (Immigration and Asylum Chamber) hears most of our Sorani cases, and an appeal there can turn on the order of events in a claimant's account. Our court-experienced Sorani interpreters also attend Magistrates' and Crown Court listings, Family Court cases and the County Court. A good Sorani court interpreter uses the first person, keeps every hedge and self-correction the witness makes, and asks the judge to repeat a word rather than guess at it.
When you book, tell us what kind of hearing it is, when it is listed, and whether the appellant comes from Iraq or Iran, so the interpreter knows the place names likely to come up. To check credentials yourself, ask whether the interpreter has the Diploma in Public Service Interpreting and whether they are on the National Register of Public Service Interpreters. Prism Linguistics is a private language-services provider and does not present itself as a court-appointed supplier.
Sorani NHS and Medical Interpreters in Leicester
For a Sorani medical interpreter, the hardest appointments are rarely the purely clinical ones. They are the conversations where a patient who has lived through detention or displacement is asked to describe symptoms that have no polite word in either language. Our Sorani NHS interpreters work in Leicester across:
- first GP registration, health checks and medication reviews
- pregnancy booking appointments, scans and postnatal checks
- talking therapies, psychiatric assessments and home treatment team visits
- outpatient clinics, test results and consent before surgery
- children's appointments, immunisations and community paediatrics
If a woman would rather speak through a female interpreter, for maternity care or anything touching on violence, tell us at booking and we will not send a man.
Sorani Interpreter for Home Office and Immigration Appointments
Asylum is where the way a person speaks Sorani gets examined most closely. When a claimant's nationality is disputed, Home Office caseworker guidance allows language analysis: experts talk with the person in their own language and dialect, then report on where that speech comes from. Someone from Sulaymaniyah and someone from Mahabad do not sound alike, and an interpreter who tidies a claimant's words into another region's forms muddies the record. Ours keep the speaker's own words, place names and terms exactly as given. We cover interview preparation, solicitor statement sessions, medico-legal examinations, reporting and appeals.
Sorani Interpreters for Police, Councils and Public Services
Police officers book Sorani interpreters for voluntary interviews, interviews under caution and statements from victims and witnesses, some of them describing exploitation on the journey here. Council teams in Leicester use them for homelessness assessments once someone granted refugee status has to leave asylum housing, for school places, and for social workers meeting young people who arrived alone. If a setting requires vetting that our available interpreter does not hold, we flag it at quote stage.
Face-to-Face Sorani Interpreter in Leicester
A Sorani interpreter in the room earns the travel cost for a long witness statement, an appeal where the claimant gives evidence, a mental capacity assessment or a family meeting with children's services. The interpreter is briefed in advance and sent to your Leicester address, and for a speaker from Iran we look for someone used to Iranian Kurdish speech. Three or four working days' notice usually means we can offer more than one name.
Telephone and Video Sorani Interpreting
Telephone interpreting handles most short Sorani calls: a pharmacy query, a rearranged appointment, a housing officer confirming a move-in date. A Sorani telephone interpreter is normally connected within a few minutes. Video interpreting suits therapy sessions and remote hearings where faces matter, and a Sorani video interpreter based hundreds of miles off can sit in on an appointment in Leicester without travelling.
How Much Does a Sorani Interpreter Cost in Leicester?
We quote each Sorani booking separately, because the length, format and subject of the work set the price more than the language does. A two-hour solicitor conference in Leicester, a ten-minute GP call and a full-day appeal all cost different amounts, and travel is added to in-person work. Put the date, duration, address and purpose into our quote form and you will get a fixed price, normally within the hour during UK office hours.
How to Book a Sorani Interpreter in Leicester
- Send the details and the speaker's origin. When it is, where (or the video link), the likely length and its purpose. Add whether the person is from Iraq or Iran, and the town if you know it. Someone from the Duhok area may need a Badini (Kurmanji) interpreter instead.
- Receive a quote and a proposed interpreter. We check availability, fix the price and, for attendance work, name the Sorani interpreter we have in mind.
- Say yes, and we brief the interpreter. They get the appointment details in advance. Individuals settle by card. A law firm, council or NHS team can be invoiced monthly, with its PO reference if it uses one.

About Leicester
Leicester is one of the larger cities in the Midlands, home to a genuinely diverse population and a busy commercial base. With so many languages spoken across its neighbourhoods, clear communication matters to almost every organisation working here. Solicitors and legal firms often need certified translations for immigration, family and civil matters. GP surgeries, health centres and clinics call on interpreters so patients can describe symptoms and understand treatment. Local authority and council teams, along with schools and colleges, support residents from many backgrounds day to day, and local businesses need their contracts and marketing understood abroad. Prism Linguistics helps with all of it. We offer certified document translation, face-to-face interpreting, and telephone and video interpreting across more than 300 languages. Each piece of work is completed by a qualified native-speaker linguist and then checked by a second linguist, which keeps standards consistent. Everything we handle stays confidential and compliant with UK GDPR. We arrange linguists throughout Leicester and the wider county area, on site or remotely, whichever suits the situation best.
Need a Sorani Translator in Leicester Instead?
Interpreters deal with the spoken word. If you have papers written in Sorani, such as a Kurdistan Region marriage contract or a court judgment from Erbil, our Sorani translator in Leicester page explains how to order a translation. Prism's certified translations from Sorani carry a signed accuracy statement on Prism letterhead, a format that HMCTS, HM Passport Office, the Home Office, UK universities and UKVI all accept.
Sorani Interpreter Leicester FAQs
How quickly can you provide a Sorani interpreter in Leicester?
A Sorani interpreter is normally available by phone or video on the day you ring, often inside an hour. We can usually get an interpreter to an address in Leicester by the next working day, and a few days of notice gives you a wider choice.
Are your Sorani interpreters qualified for court and tribunal work?
Sorani hearings go to court-experienced interpreters, and for an asylum appeal in the First-tier Tribunal we choose someone who knows that tribunal's procedure. Clients are welcome to check an interpreter's DPSI or NRPSI status for themselves. Prism Linguistics is a private agency and holds no court appointment.
Do you provide Sorani interpreters for NHS appointments in Leicester?
Yes. Surgeries, hospital departments, midwives and psychological services in Leicester use our Sorani interpreters on site or remotely, paying on invoice. Families can also book one for a relative who does not yet speak English.
Can I book a same-day Sorani interpreter?
Same-day telephone and video bookings are nearly always possible. Whether someone can attend in person that day hinges on the appointment time and on which Sorani interpreters are free near Leicester, so call us early in the day.
Do you interpret both Sorani to English and English to Sorani?
Yes. Everything the Sorani speaker says goes into English, and the replies of the doctor, officer or solicitor go back into Sorani, usually consecutively, from the start of the appointment to the end.
Is Sorani the same as Kurdish?
Sorani is one of the main forms of Kurdish, also called Central Kurdish, spoken in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq and in western Iran. It is not the same as Kurmanji, the Kurdish of most Kurds from Turkey and Syria and of Badini speakers around Duhok. For an interview or a hearing, book the variety the person actually speaks.

About the Sorani Language
Sorani, or Central Kurdish, belongs to the Iranian branch of the Indo-European family, and its written standard is based on the speech of Sulaymaniyah. It is written right to left in a modified Arabic alphabet which, unlike Arabic and Persian spelling, gives almost every vowel its own letter. Regional forms include the speech of Erbil and Mukriyani around Mahabad in Iran. The 2021 Census did not record Sorani on its own: its speakers are counted within the 66,443 usual residents of England and Wales who gave Kurdish as their main language. Kurdish in Arabic-based letters is not always Sorani, though, because Badini from the Duhok area is written that way too.
