Papers issued in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq often set Sorani and Arabic side by side on a single page. The Iraqi constitution of 2005 lists official documents and correspondence, and passports too, among the things to be produced in both Arabic and Kurdish, and federal offices inside the region are required to work in both. A civil status extract, a court-registered marriage document or a school certificate from Sulaymaniyah can therefore state every fact twice.
The two halves don't always agree. A father's name may be spelt one way in the Arabic field and another in the Kurdish one, or a stamp may blot out part of the Sorani and leave the Arabic readable. Our Sorani translation services in Leicester cover the whole page in both scripts, and a translator's note flags any point where the versions differ, so the caseworker sees it straight away.
Iranian Kurds bring a different mix. Iran's constitution makes Persian the language of official documents, so a birth record from Sanandaj is normally in Persian and goes to a Persian translator. What reaches us in Sorani from Iranian clients tends to be private writing: letters from family, or a handwritten account.
English to Sorani Translator (and Sorani to English)
Sorani to English is what most Leicester clients order, since the person reading is a Home Office caseworker, a registrar, a family judge or a university admissions team. English to Sorani translation is ordered by councils and NHS services for appointment letters, health leaflets and housing notices, and by solicitors so that a client grasps what a witness statement or tribunal decision says before signing or acting on it.
Copy going into Sorani is written in Sorani's own Arabic-based Kurdish alphabet, not the Latin letters used for Kurmanji, and it must read as Kurdish rather than Arabic or Persian with Kurdish words dropped in. Native Sorani speakers translate into Sorani. Work out of Sorani goes to translators who grew up speaking English and read Sorani fluently.
Certified Sorani Translation for UKVI, Courts and Universities
Certification turns our English version into something an office can rely on: we add a statement on Prism letterhead confirming the translation is accurate, sign, date and stamp it, and send a PDF, posting a tracked copy where paper is wanted. HM Passport Office, HMCTS, UKVI, the Home Office and UK universities take documents certified this way.
The Immigration Rules, at paragraph 39B, require a translation sent with an application to confirm that it accurately reflects the original, and to carry the date, the translator's or company official's full name and signature, and contact details. On leave to remain and settlement applications, a qualified translator must certify it and their credentials must be given. The Sorani original is submitted with the English.
UK ENIC wants certified translations of qualifications that aren't in English. Its Translation Waiver Service names Arabic among the languages it reads in the original, but Kurdish is not on its list, so a Sorani-only transcript normally needs translating; with a bilingual certificate, ask UK ENIC first. Britain doesn't use sworn translators, and certification fills that role. Any notarisation or legalisation is arranged by you or your solicitor, and we're happy to translate a document that already carries those stamps.
Sorani Documents We Translate
- Sorani birth certificate translation, including civil status extracts and family records from the Kurdistan Region
- Sorani marriage certificate translation: court-registered marriage documents and the religious contracts behind them
- personal status court rulings on divorce, custody and inheritance
- school certificates, transcripts and degree certificates from schools and universities in the region
- passports and national identity cards with Arabic and Kurdish text
- driving licences issued in Iraq
- immigration evidence, such as letters, summonses and statements written in Sorani
- medical records: discharge summaries, test results and prescriptions
Marriage paperwork deserves a word of its own. In Iraq, a marriage contracted before a cleric has generally needed certifying at a Personal Status Court before the state treats it as legally valid, and that court issues the civil marriage certificate. If you hold both the religious contract and the court document, send us both. They record different things.
Sorani Legal, Medical and Business Translation
Sorani legal translation is mostly family and status work: rulings on marriage, divorce and custody, papers for a house or land in the Kurdistan Region that forms part of an estate, and evidence for asylum and immigration appeals. More on our legal translation services page.
Sorani medical translation goes both ways. Patients bring hospital notes from Iraq so their GP in Leicester has the history, while NHS teams want care plans and consent forms put into Sorani. Read about our medical translation services.
Business requests are fewer, mostly contracts for firms trading with the region. A Sorani website reverses its whole layout to run right to left (see website translation).
Professional Sorani Translators: Who Does the Work
Every Sorani job passes through two linguists. A professional Sorani translator does the draft, and a second linguist then goes through it against the source line by line before release. We match the translator to the document too: a personal status court judgment mixing Kurdish and Arabic goes to someone fluent in both, a hospital letter to someone comfortable with clinical English.
Handwritten registry entries are slow. If a word can't be deciphered, the translator says so in a note rather than guessing. ITI or CIOL membership is a reasonable thing to raise with any translation provider, and you're welcome to raise it with us.
How Much Does Sorani Translation Cost in Leicester?
Certified Sorani translation begins at about £35 per page; court bundles, medical files and other lengthy documents are priced by the word. A bilingual page where the Sorani and Arabic disagree takes more checking, and so does handwriting, so the quote allows for both. Upload scans with our quote form during UK office hours and expect a fixed figure, normally inside the hour. How we reach a price is explained under translation cost.
How Long Does a Sorani Translation Take?
Most single Sorani certificates are translated, checked and certified within one to two working days. When capacity allows, a short document can occasionally leave us the day it arrives (see same-day translation). A file of judgments or medical notes is given its own date when we quote, so mention any application deadline up front.
How to Order a Sorani Translation in Leicester
- Photograph or scan each page. Include the reverse of any card, plus every stamp and margin note. A separate Arabic or Persian sheet that came with the document should be sent too.
- Say who will receive it and give us the passport spellings. That might be UKVI, UK ENIC, a court, an employer or the register office, and we need every name written exactly as the passport shows it.
- Agree the price. The translator works, the checker reviews, and the certified PDF arrives by email, plus tracked post if you ask for paper.

Sorani Translator Near Me in Leicester
There's no Prism branch in Leicester, and written work doesn't need one: scans come in by email or the quote form, and the certified Sorani translation goes back to any UK address. A Sorani translator near you counts for less than one who knows your kind of document. What's local is the destination, such as the register office, your Leicester solicitor or a council housing officer.
Confidential Sorani Document Translation
Sorani document translation often involves things a client would never want passed around: an asylum account, a medical history, the addresses of relatives who are still in Iraq or Iran. We process every file under UK GDPR. Nobody outside the job sees it (just the translator, the checking linguist and your project manager), the file moves and is stored securely, and none of it is reused for other work.
About Leicester
Leicester is one of the larger cities in the Midlands, home to a genuinely diverse population and a busy commercial base. With so many languages spoken across its neighbourhoods, clear communication matters to almost every organisation working here. Solicitors and legal firms often need certified translations for immigration, family and civil matters. GP surgeries, health centres and clinics call on interpreters so patients can describe symptoms and understand treatment. Local authority and council teams, along with schools and colleges, support residents from many backgrounds day to day, and local businesses need their contracts and marketing understood abroad. Prism Linguistics helps with all of it. We offer certified document translation, face-to-face interpreting, and telephone and video interpreting across more than 300 languages. Each piece of work is completed by a qualified native-speaker linguist and then checked by a second linguist, which keeps standards consistent. Everything we handle stays confidential and compliant with UK GDPR. We arrange linguists throughout Leicester and the wider county area, on site or remotely, whichever suits the situation best.

Sorani Translator Leicester FAQs
How much does Sorani translation cost in Leicester?
Sorani certified translation is priced from about £35 a page, with long documents charged per word. Quotes are fixed, and one normally reaches you within the hour when the scans arrive in UK office hours.
Can you certify a Sorani translation for UKVI or the Home Office?
Caseworkers at UKVI and the Home Office accept Prism's certified Sorani translations, each carrying our accuracy statement on Prism letterhead, which a named signatory signs, dates and stamps, with our contact details. That is the format accepted for visa, settlement and citizenship purposes.
How quickly can you translate a Sorani document?
A single Sorani certificate is normally ready after a working day or two. Capacity permitting, a short one can sometimes be finished the same day, while a longer file gets its own agreed deadline.
Do I need to send my original Sorani documents?
No, sharp scans or photos taken on a phone are all we work from. Keep the originals at home, because a registrar or UKVI may want them.
Do you translate English to Sorani as well as Sorani to English?
Prism translates Sorani in both directions: native Sorani speakers handle English to Sorani, native English speakers fluent in Sorani handle Sorani to English, and a second linguist reviews every job.
My name is spelt differently in the Sorani, Arabic and English parts of my papers. Which spelling do you use?
Every name in a Prism translation follows the spelling in your passport. If a certificate gives another form, the translator adds a brief note so the reader knows both belong to the same person.

About the Sorani Language
Central Kurdish, as Sorani is also called, runs from right to left in an adapted Arabic alphabet, usually counted as 33 letters. It has letters Arabic lacks, for sounds such as v, a rolled r and a heavy l, and it writes nearly all of its vowels, so a Sorani text can't be read as though it were Arabic or Persian. Those written vowels help explain why one name looks different in the Kurdish and Arabic parts of the same certificate, and different again in the Latin letters of a passport. Iranian papers use Solar Hijri dates, and our translators convert them to the Gregorian calendar in a note.
