The Bibliothèque nationale de France subject heading Nzabi (peuple d'Afrique) files fifteen other spellings under one entry, Bandjabi, Banjabi, Ndjabi, Njabi and Nzebi among them, and places the group in Gabon and the Republic of the Congo. The Library of Congress subject headings follow suit, with Bandjabi listed as a variant name for the people but not for the language.

So a referral that says Bandjabi is telling you who the speaker is, and the language they will speak to an interpreter is Nzebi. The catalogues record it with dj, dz, j and z in the middle (Bandjabi, Bandzabi, Banjabi, Banzabi), all versions of the same name. The Library of Congress heading for the Nzebi language lists Bandzabi, Ndjabi and Indzebi among its variants, but not Bandjabi.

The same record cites a 2009 book of proverbs whose title calls the people the Bandzebi and whose cover says they speak indzebi. That split, Ba- for the people and In- or Yi- for the speech, is a useful clue rather than a rule, since some sources use Bandzabi for the language too. Glottolog's entry for the language does not record Bandjabi at all, which is why we never search on that word alone.

The useful questions are about place: Gabon or the Congo, and which province or town. Article 2 of Gabon's 1991 constitution as revised in 2011 made French the official working language, so a Bandjabi speaker from Gabon may also know French; ask privately how comfortable they are before relying on it.
